âSometimes my brain processes things difficult. Â I just need more time. Â And in school everything needs to be fast. Â You always have to know whatâs going to happen next and it can be hard to make friends. Â My dad was always my biggest supporter. Â Heâd come into my room at night and we would talk for hours. Â Heâd tell me: âYour stories will make you famous one day.â Â Heâd show my writing to friends and family and I would get compliments. Â I didnât know what to do after he died. Â I stayed in my room for six years. I wrote thirty-one stories. Â All I did was write. Â I only came out to eat. Â I wouldnât speak to anyone. Â Last year my sister convinced me to visit an art studio for people with special needs. Â She asked me every single day, until one day she finally said: âIâm going to the studio and youâre coming with me.â Â At first I stood in the corner. Â After so many years of doing nothing, it was hard for me to see people having fun. Â It was like a burning anger and then it came out in tears. Â I decided to join the group. Â The studio slowly opened me up to the world again. Â I began to make friends. Â I realized that so many things had happened while I was locked away. Â And while some things die, other things are being created. Â I understand now how beautiful that is. Â And Iâve started talking again. Â For the longest time my sister would beg me: âPlease Asma, say something.â Â Now she wishes Iâd talk less.â (Special Olympics World Games, Abu Dhabi, UAE
