Dendritic fractalicity Whether you are looking at the edge of a puddle or an ocean the self similarity of these drainage patterns at different scales remains their most obvious feature.. Not only is the scale impossible to assess, but the pattern is also similar to that of tree branches and some fracture patterns amongst others, demonstrating how the same shapes recur in different settings (as outlined in a fascinating book I read called The Self Made Tapestry: Pattern Formation in Nature). It also brings to mind the ancient Chinese concept of Li, incorporated into their word for physics, which translates as patterns of organic energy. The drainage system here was taken from space and is found at Shadegan Lagoon by Musa Bay in Iran.
