gelöscht / verdampft, 2022, photograph by Gregor Graf, 12C pigmentprint on paper.
The photograph, gelöscht / verdampft, originates from a loose series of motifs from the city of Linz, that were created within other projects or during spontaneous, inner-city photo trips. If you cross the Danube on the federal highway 3 over the Steyregger Bridge and head in the direction of the city centre, you are immediately immersed in a world of industry. Squeezed between the Linz chemical park and the voestalpine steelworks, you are followed by the smells and sounds of a highly engineered, seemingly unreal and harsh world. The strangly organic and at the same time most powerful appearance in this environment, is the steam column of the coking plant, that appears at regular intervals and can be seen from afar. When the extinguishing water pours over the glowing coke loads, a huge cloud of steam rises into the sky as an ephemeral landmark, only to disappear again immediately afterwards. Like an approaching storm, the sky darkens, casting shadows for a photo of a cloud that momentarily covers the sun.
Nine months ago, three artists had to leave their studios at the same time. These three artists, Cécile Belmont, Katharina Lackner and me, took this coincidence as an opportunity to found a shared studio. Since then, we are working under the same roof also with the Moser and Hager architects. Sometimes everything really fits together.
A lightbox compelled me to take a photo. It hit me an my sentimental side. Like a three-legged dog, it excudes something heroic. Hello, I´m still alive.
