Gregory Manes, you did not bail on the cute teacher who likes to make her own pottery!
OUT. || I’m finally watching season three, and Greg is, quite literally, everything.
OUT. || The second I’m caught up, I’ll be doing all the Greg things. To be honest, I wasn’t expecting as much Greg content from the new season as there is 😂 and so I thought I could get away with, like, waiting to binge.
Tanner Novlan as Grant Hines in ‘My Best Friend’s Christmas’
OUT. || Honestly, I never 100% expected to be back on Greg after all the stuff with Tyler came to light. And I know that the rpc over here is mostly dead but??? I don’t know if I’d want to write with Alex if Tyler is used as the FC, you know? Which is so futzy because Alex is such a gigantic part of Greg’s character. GUIDANCE????
— opening thoughts
Greg was a nice guy in high school, but he wasn’t exactly Mr. Popular. Alex even thought that the Pod Squad wouldn’t be aware of who he is despite them being sophomores when Greg graduated high school. He’s always been a little quiet and very studious, mostly just trying to stay under Jesse’s radar.
Because of his desire not to rock the boat and dealing with his own trauma from Jesse’s toxicity, he never actively stopped Jesse hurting Alex. He’d try a little bit, like “Oh, come on, Dad, let’s go,” but he had never physically stepped up until they were adults.
Greg had never planned on joining any branch of the military, but when he was finishing up with high school, he had no clue what he wanted to do, and all he knew was that he wanted to get away from Jesse. He joined the Navy because a recruiter saw his potential with languages, but also because he did not want to be in a branch where Jesse had power. He purposefully chose to not be in the Air Force.
His choice to go Navy was a huge point of contention between himself and Jesse, and it led to him essentially being told not to come home for holidays or when he was on leave.
In the books, I know one of the Manes bros is in the Marines, but show!Jesse seems to be very gung-ho about USAF and that a son choosing a different branch would be a “sign of disrespect.”
Greg had really enjoyed visiting his mom’s home in the Navajo Nation when he was a kid, but it did not really become home until he’d been told he wasn’t welcome anymore in Jesse’s house. He spent leave time with Mindy, and when he got out of the Navy, he went back to school for his teaching certificate in order to bring it back to the Reservation. He did not have any plans of staying on the Reservation or even building a life there until Jesse left him feeling rootless.
There is a very large part of Greg — a conscious part of him — which has made the decision that at this point in his life, he wants to dedicate himself to helping Alex. We of course see this in the show, but I mean this: there is virtually nothing that is above Alex in Greg’s current list of priorities.
Greg is incredibly observant and has a pretty stellar memory. HOWEVER, at this point, until confirmed or proven otherwise by canon, his default is that he is not aware of the alien presence in Roswell, nor of Louise Truman’s true identity. Since he was kicked out by Jesse, in a different branch of the military, and never involved with Project Shepherd as far as we know, he would not have been privy to that information.
Greg is very emotionally intelligent, and he always has been, but it wasn’t until he was out from under his father that he really let himself develop those interpersonal skills which make him an astute teacher now.
Greg is not perfect: he still by and large tries to avoid confrontation ( which makes his confrontation with Jesse more impactful ) and in fact naturally has an avoidant personality. This is something he has been actively and consciously working on, and he’s built some much better and healthier habits. However, that underlying desire to have everything be quiet and non-confrontational still is there, under the surface.
The exception to that rule in present day is Alex. Greg has made so many internal resolutions to himself regarding his youngest brother that he is legit ready to throw hands for Alex.
You’re still the Isobel Evans who convinced the basketball captain to pull four different fire alarms to get out of AP Gov, right? Yeah. Legend.
OUT. || Greg is so disapopinted in me for not being here nearly as often as I want to be, nor for sticking to the writing schedule I’m trying to make for myself.
TIME FOR ANOTHER REMINDER TO VOTE !
OUT. || What’s this? Another reminder to vote? Heck yes it is! I know you’re getting tired and everything we hear coming out of Washington is like a dystopian nightmare, and we know that districts have been gerrymandered to all hell and the electoral college means that one vote does not equal one vote. But we still have to vote if we’re eligible. Less than HALF the eligible population voted in the 2016 election. 54% of eligible voters did not exercise their right to vote, and many people had very good, very valid, very personal reasons. For example, did you know that in many states, it’s written into the law to allow employees time off to vote? I know that most of the RPC that is eligible to vote is within the 18-29 age demographic: this is the lowest represented demographic at the polls historically. Gen Z, this is for make of you your first time being able to vote. VOTE. Look into your local elections as well, and your state elections. A lot of us have been keeping out eyes open and looking at issues in the country: this is a very real way for this generation and his demographic to start stepping into a position of power that we have as a voting bloc.
check your registration/address/voter information *especially if you have moved in the last four years
request an absentee ballot
check your upcoming LOCAL elections.
Voters aged 18-29 are still the least likely demographic to turn out to the polls on election day. If you can, please vote!
OUT. || Happy Greg Day! I’m here :)
I’M GOING TO TRY OUT A SCHEDULE
OUT. || School started! And a new job, which means I’m working full-time for the first time in like six months.
But also, I dearly want to be active, so I’m going to try out a writing schedule!
What does this mean? « Depending on the day of the week, I’ll be actively doing replies on a different blog. Will you be posting the replies right away? « I’ve tried to put myself onto a queue multiple times over the last five years. I’m going to try to be on a reply queue and also take advantage of the many permanent starter calls I’ve put out over the years and try to get more things going. That way, I’ll still be a presence on the dash more than I have been presently. Does that mean if you’re posting on Kol on Monday and I need you on Tuesday, I have to wait for a week before you’ll reply to an IM? « I’m signed in on mobile to every one of my muses, plus for mutuals, my discord is available!! I am always available OOC, so long as I’m not working or studying or whatnot.
THE SCHEDULE: Mondays: Kol Tuesdays: Becky Wednesdays: Clark Thursdays: The Twins Fridays: Fleur Weekends: Free for all/finishing up what needs to be finished
~ If you have any questions, please let me know! Otherwise, please feel free to add me on Discord ( pisces szn#3030 ), but please tell me who you are first, or IM me here saying “I’m adding you on Discord, just so you know! ~
OUT. || I FORGOT GREG!!!! Greg will be on FRIDAYS with Fleur; Fleur is a very low activity muse and I can afford to do replies for two muses since I do not work on Fridays either !
OUT. || What are you talking about, I definitely didn’t disappear onto other blogs for an unspecified amount of time! ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
Tanner Novlan - Gregory Manes on Rosewell New Mexico.
OUT. || I’m here! I got sucked into a muse I have been seriously neglecting!
OUT. || You know those actors who you don’t see super frequently, but when you do.... you just go “that’s a stupidly pretty person. how does someone that pretty even exist”? That’s me and Finn Wittrock.
bravery-sought.
Despite bearing differences from their late father , Alex still feels aspects of Jesse that linger directly beneath his skin. All Manes men were born with the capability to be VIOLENT and brutal. Merciless and absolutely TYRANNICAL. It lives in his veins , but Alex believes that he may have gotten a lower dosage of such traits when he was born. Too much heart and emotional intelligence made him STRONGER than the evils that Jesse had tried so hard to influence upon him.
Both Alex and Gregory are of the same coin , more similar than their other two brothers. They are both DAMAGED from their childhoods that were ripped away with such force that it left them stumbling for stability. All his life , for ten years , the military has been all that he’s known. Without it , Alex knows he wouldn’t be the person he is today. As much as it’s shattered him , it’s shaped his entire world.
A smile spreads across his features at Gregory’s compliment and a chuckle resonates from him. Truly , he had been riding the high of having accomplished such a task that had seemed so DAUNTING to him in the past. He doesn’t regret it ; how could he? Technically speaking , the world is once again his like it had been before he enlisted. “ Yeah , I know I should be parting from the Air Force. Maybe that’s just a sense of security for me , but I’m good at codebreaking and hacking. I don’t know if I can ever set that aside for a more domesticated lifestyle yet. ”
He slightly leans his head back to relieve a minor ghosting ache. Alex can still feel the sensation of Jesse’s fingers DIGGING into his throat , threatening to SUFFOCATE the life from his lungs. He can still feel it , pressure being steadily applied to his supple airway. Alex gently wraps his free hand around the location where his father’s own used to lay. His jaw clenches tightly.
“ I… know he’s dead , but I can’t shake him. ” Alex clears his throat before removing his hand , letting his wrist rest on his left knee. He downs the rest of his beer with ease and sets the bottle aside. He abruptly changes the subject , the demons in his head swirling and whispering in his ear. “ How’re you injuries? ”
GREG SHRUGGED AT Alex’s admission that he should be leaving the Air Force. “I don’t think there’s anything that you should or shouldn’t be doing,” he reasoned. “That’s sorta the whole point of this, isn’t it? That you get a choice, no one pushing their agenda on you? If you like that security, the predictability, knowing where you stand— hell, I get it. You’ve worked hard at your job and you’re good at it. Really, really good from what I hear.” He may have not been as familiar with the ins and outs of Alex’s position, especially since Greg was both out of the military and had been in an entirely different branch — their paths never crossing — but he had heard some things, at least. When Flint bothered to return a message, or when Alex would let him know that he was getting a commendation or had gotten yet another award for his work. And though the military had turned out not to be the place where he thrived, Greg could understand someone liking their position there.
“The idea of you hacking and stuff is scary,” Greg admitted. “I think about the movies and stuff of you getting kidnapped because you know too much. Did you know that I’m on the watchlist because of my role? And I wasn’t even in it for very long.” He wasn’t as high up as the detonations specialists in any given branch of the military — those engineers were about as high on the watchlist as someone could be — but the fact that he had been an intelligence officer did place him somewhere within the realm of being a potential threat to something-or-other. “I can’t imagine what Uncle Sam would do if someone with your talents suddenly craved the quiet life.”
He leaned back in his chair, looking out at the way the fireflies flickered against their Roswell backdrop. He wished he was back on the Reservation where the memories of his father never seemed to follow him. He wished he hadn’t needed to run away when he was eighteen, but he had, and he’d found a good life. He wished so many things, and now that he was older, there were holes in his life he needed to patch... to make better. Though he had only been a kid himself, and even the counselor he’d seen when he’d returned from his last deployment had tried to convince him that it couldn’t have been his responsibility to be perfect as a teenager who had been scared and exhausted in his own house... there was that feeling as a big brother that still managed to make him feel like a complete failure. Talk of their father felt necessary, but it still felt like Jesse was haunting them, ruining even more nights between brothers.
“Oh, they’re fine,” he replied. “I’ve got a harder head than it looks like. Plus, I’m not massive, but I’m taller than most of the guys around here.” he flashed a tired smile. “Gives me a leg-up on the competition, you know?”
