hello yes i would like to report a murder
Gale "The Rizzard of Waterdeep" Dekarios
Imagine Gale as a talented and impressive young man, able to compose the Weave at will, skilled in a way that few can match, and favored by the Goddess of Magic herself. Imagine that because of these accomplishments, heās caught the eye of a few up-and-coming magic adepts, and he falls in love with one of themāhis first real love. Gale isnāt one to toss the āLā word around lightly, so when he tells them he loves them, he means it; he gives himself over to them completely.
And in return, they love him for his potential. For his status. For the magic he can command. They love the wizard they see on the surface, but not the man underneath. They are attracted to his power, but not to him.
So of course the relationship fails, after the thrill of his magic wears off. But because Gale is a resilient young man and heās caught the eye of so many, he soon falls in love with another.
And then it happens again. And again.
And each time Galeās heart is ravaged, his ambition to become a better wizard grows, because heās being shown time and time again that his magic ability is all that matters.
So much so that, by the time Mystra decides to elevate him from Favored to Chosen to Lover, he welcomes her with eager, desperate arms. Because if all his worth is in his magic, and thatās all he has to offer, and thatās all anyone wants from him, who better to love him than the Goddess of Magic herself?
Exceptā¦thereās a nagging voice in the back of his head that whispers she doesnāt really love him. Thereās anxiety in his heart as time passes, and he reaches both the limit of what his talents can do and what Mystra will allow him to do. And most troubling of all: a growing panic that, just like his other lovers, she will soon grow tired of him and discard him if he canāt improve his magic any further.
He tries pouting, and pleading, and begging her to let him take more power, to let him be more for her, but she refuses. Smiles patronizingly. Tells him to be patient. But Gale canāt be patient when his power is tied so closely to his self-worth; he canāt be patient when doing so in the past has only ever lead to heartache.
So he does what he believes will be a Grand Romantic Gesture, one that will finally put him on equal footing with the woman he loves. Instead, it turns out to be a folly that dooms him and destroys his talents. And just as heād always feared, Mystra tosses him aside the moment his magical gifts are goneābecause whatās left of him holds no value for her.
āāāā
Imagine Gale in his tower, alone, afraid, the ever-hungry orb in his chest, with only his tressym there to help him. No other friends to speak of. His colleagues forced to keep away for their own safety. His magical talents utterly stripped down, so that even when he does try and distract himself with illusions, heās bitterly reminded of what he used to be capable of. Waking every morning wondering if it will be his last, ending every day full of loneliness and disappointment.
ā¦and then he meets Tav.
At the lowest point in his life, at his most vulnerable, when he knows heās going to be considered a burden, he meets this stranger and their group. So he does what he can to be usefulāassigning himself to be camp cook, offering up his (now meager) magic skills, turning the charm up to 11āas he desperately hopes this will somehow work out. Heās pleasantly surprised when, after providing only minor details of his condition, Tav agrees to help him. Heās even more surprised when they actually follow through.
Imagine how Gale feels as Tav treats him kindly. As he grows to trust Tav, and then grows to like them. Imagine his surprise as he opens up and shows them more and more of himself, and they donāt turn him away.
But then his condition worsens. And he has to reveal everything: the foolish mistakes heās made, and how dangerous he is as a result. He clings to Tavās hand as he shows them his folly. Heās at their mercy now, and he knows this might be the last time heāll ever feel the touch of another being, if they decideāand Gods, why wouldnāt they decide?āto cast him out.
ā¦but they donāt. They donāt. Instead, they tell him to stay.
Imagine the relief Gale feels. The gratitude. And perhapsā¦just a hint of something more. Something that he dare not name, but that flares to life every time he thinks of how warm their hand was in his. Something that feels dangerously close to jealousy, when heās had too much to drink and sees Tav smiling at anotherā¦
But he knows these are all foolish thoughts, because he has nothing to offer Tav. They are wonderful just as they are, but heā¦he is an empty shell of a man, a discarded husk of a wizard, and while they might tolerate him, he could never believe they might actually want him.
And besides, he still thinks of Mystra. He still longs for Mystra. She who cast him out, but to whom he still feels tethered. Sometimes he needs to cocoon himself in the weave, just to try and calm his fears and bring some joy back to his life, because magic is his life. And sometimes he just needs to see her face, even though that hurts as much as it heals.
One night heās lost in thought, having conjured Mystaās image after settling down at camp. Thinking that even if she hadnāt ālovedā himācertainly not in the way heād loved herāsheād given him enough otherwise, hadnāt she? Sheād amused him and been amused by him, theyād shared countless pleasures, why hadnāt he been satisfied with that?
Gale is so lost in thought he doesnāt realize Tav has come up behind him. Until they ask a question, startling him out of his trance. Heās a bit shaken, so he tries to turn the conversation from Mystra to the weave itself. And then a wonderful idea occurs to him, something that heād been toying with already: what if they were to conjure the weave together?
He can show Tav how important magic is to him, let them experience what he does, perhaps even impress them a bit. But most importantly, share a moment with them. As friends would doā¦
Heās elated when Tav agrees. He leads them through the steps effortlessly, and theyāre a surprisingly good student, following his instructions correctly (if a bit clumsily). Heās as excited as they areāperhaps even more so!āwhen they succeed in channeling the weave.
Itās such a pleasant, familiar feeling for him, like coming home to his tower in Waterdeep. Even as the weave connects him with Tav and makes them one, heās easily able to hide his innermost thoughts, because heās done it so many times before.
ā¦but heās forgotten that Tav has not.
āāāā
Imagine Gale knowing every romantic partner he ever had only wanted him because of how he could raise their status, or how he could amuse them, or how he could command magic for them. And, each time, he was happy to oblige them, even desperate to oblige them, because if that was the price of their love, then he was sure it would be worth it.
But it still all came to nothing.
Now imagine Gale connected in an intimate way with someone he likes very, very muchāwhile being what he considers his lowest, most worthless, and most humbled self. As far from the powerful, impressive wizard he once was as he could ever be. And suddenly a vision enters his mind from the lovely creature standing next to him. Only, to his complete and utter shock, it isnāt one where he is providing them with a service, or wowing them with his magical ability, or granting them some kind of power from one of the spells he commands.
Instead, when he sees their desire laid bare before him, itās a vision of kissing him. Of holding his hand. The two most basic forms of affection and physical connection. The two things that he would still be able to offer them even if every last ounce of his remaining magical abilities were stripped from him. The two things he could share with them even if he was no longer Gale of Waterdeep, and just plain old Gale Dekarios instead.
Imagine the embarrassment and trepidation he feels at first, because surely he is mistaken?ā¦and then the elation when he realizes that he is not. So much elation that his concentration is broken, the weave dissipating as he forgets about channeling it, as he forgets about Mystra. Because all that matters to him now is the image before himāthe most pleasant and welcome image heās seen in a very, very long time.
Imagine how that would feelā¦and how besotted, enamored and completely devoted heād be to Tav afterwards. To know that someone finallyāfinallyājust wants him.
Just imagine.
Okay, this is one of the main reasons I fell for Gale, fictional character aside. My first play through I went in blind, it was my first video game I played (only a sims and Mario kart player lmao) and so I was flirting with everyone, because why not? Everyone seems so into Tav! And Galeās build up is so slow that on my first play through I forgot I even imagined kissing him because I am a vampire girlie usually.
Well. Then he has his little speech about being into Tav after battle and I was surprised but then nothing came for awhile. I was nervous to go to moonrise so I did it as the last thing before I entered the night songs cut scene. And oh my god, I tried to turn him down and ended up giving up 15 hours of game play to turn down Astarion and pick Gale instead.
The way he is written, voice acted, designed with body language, I mean my god. Itās the epitome of romantic, to me, but Iām also a phantom of the opera girlie so take that as you will.
This is one of the best Gale dissertations Iāve ever seen thank you for this.
A moment of magic
He tries not to dwell on what just happened. He fails miserably. The image conjured by Tav lingers on his mind - alluring, elating, confusing.
He recalls their brief moment in the Weave, the way they stood so perilously close, their hands almost touching, Tavās scent invading his nostrils in the most delicious of ways.
It had been his idea, sharing a moment of magic, stopping time for the briefest of moments if only to pretend that all the chaos and destruction around them and inside them werenāt real. He had done this almost instinctively, without thinking, spurred by an unspoken desire, a feeling that he couldnāt - no, wouldnāt - place.
When he conjured an effigy of Mystra in the palm of his hand, had it really been love spurring him to do so? Or had he been moved by a compulsion to seek permission, guidance, forgiveness?
The only thing he knows now is that he cannot stop thinking about the kiss that never was. He knows he doesnāt deserve it - he is tainted, doomed, nothing.
And yet, in the small confines of his tent, he finds himself wishing he had seized the moment, that he had tangled his hands in Tavās hair, that their mouths had partaken in each otherās sweet, wet bliss. He finally admits to himself that this had been his wish all along.
And yet, he knows itās heresy. Mystra is the Weave. Mystra is his life. She is everything. To desire another - with all their their flawed, mortal fallacy - above her is pure madness.
And perhaps he has gone mad, for he has never wanted anything more than to run over to Tavās tent, rip the fastenings open, and lose himself until he is made anew.
Perhaps Mystra sensed this, yet another act of unforgivable betrayal from her former Chosen. She must have done, or else why would the connection have been severed so abruptly? He is suddenly reminded of one of the many words people often use to describe his goddess - jealous.
He clutches at his chest, feeling the warm embers of something greater - something more - flicker amidst the cold, devouring darkness of the orb.
His inquisitive mind stirs, tickled by the newfound feelings and sensations within, the mystery, the possibilities.
This, he thinks, daring to hope for the first time in a long time. This is something worth holding on to.
Gale, well, being Gale with silly nerdy thoughts in his brain š¤š
just saw ur gale/mystra analysis post. im new to the game and dnd lore and honestly⦠ur take on their relationship feels like the most natural/compelling one??? esp since its all too easy to simplify topics that have many facets and nuanceā¦.
thanks for sharing i love analysis and reading peopleās takes on narratives : D
My pleasure! (Bee from the future here: congrats, you spawned another meta!)
I love complicated characters, WAY more than I like a clear cut-and-dry case. Flaws, to me, are what make a character compelling and lead to interesting stories about them with choices that can get them into situations. I'm both writing a fanfic and running a campaign where I'm playing as Gale, and in the interest of portraying him properly and in-character, I've gone into SUCH a deep dive into all the decisions and facts that make him him.
It helps to, y'know, also be in love with the fictional wizard, but I digress
The thing about Baldur's Gate 3 is that no character in there is perfect. I've seen a couple analyses about the theme of continuing cycles of abuse vs breaking out of them, but in my mind, in terms of the characters themselves, it goes like this:
Imagine Gale as a talented and impressive young man, able to compose the Weave at will, skilled in a way that few can match, and favored by the Goddess of Magic herself. Imagine that because of these accomplishments, heās caught the eye of a few up-and-coming magic adepts, and he falls in love with one of themāhis first real love. devnote: a bit anxious at seeing everybody again, channeling it into anxiety about his clothes
devnote: relaxing, flirting back a little
BALDUR'S GATE 3 ā gale dekarios (6/?)
I know everyone has mixed feelings about Gale having perfectly sculpted abs, but I do find it hilarious to think of how stunned the other companions would be the first time they see them. Galeās wizard outfits are all loose-fitting or full coverup robes, and his pajama top is a long velvet tunic, so at no point would any of the companions (other than a romanced Tav, of course) have reason to suspect heās hiding anything other than a dad bod under all that clothing.
So imagine if, after a month or so of adventuring together, Gale has to take off his tunic to patch up a tear in the seam. The companions are all relaxing at camp, and suddenly they see this incredible ripped 6-pack staring back at them.
Galeās completely oblivious, just concentrating on fixing his shirt. Meanwhile, LaeāZel and Shadowheart look at each other with huge āwtfā eyes, Wyll immediately stops his dancing practice just to stare in amazement, Karlach starts applauding, and Astarion has a full f*cking meltdown.
Just sputtering and gesturing wildly at Galeās torso while yelling, āEXCUSE ME, BUT WHAT THEāWHAT THE F*CK IS THAT? DO YOU ALL SEE THAT??ā Eyes bugging out. Throwing his hands in the air. āAnd you all thought ME being a VAMPIRE was the big f*cking shock?!ā
Thank you for pulling me out of that stone. It was an act of foresighted kindness, I assure you, for I have the feeling ample opportunities will present themselves for me to return the favour.
Astro-Observation - Leadership vs. Confidence
If I read āyouāre a born leaderā with Leo/Capricorn/Aries/Sagittarius placements one more goddamn time I swearā¦
Having natural confidence isnāt mutually exclusive with wanting to lead people. Sometimes these placements come off as leaders because they attract attention, which they may or may not like. Iām sorry, but unless there are placements that are more on the humanitarian side of the zodiac in someoneās chart, the Leo/Cap/Aries/Sag people more often than not are relishing in the benefits and power of status and popularity than anything else. That doesnāt make them heartless, theyāre just real about it. Having public recognition is thrilling for these placements and thereās nothing wrong with that! Donāt sugarcoat it by calling them āleadersā. How many Instagram influencers would you call āleadersā? Theyāre entrepreneurs and personalities.
Leadership comes with a cause. Confidence comes with power.
I get that āborn leaderā shit because of my Leo ASC vibes, but I wouldnāt even have a modicum of patience for people if I didnāt have my wonderful Cancer dom mother (with an Aqua moon) raising me and teaching me the value of caregiving and not abusing your power while doing so, which I think reflects my Mars in Cancer and Aqua stellium (Sun, Merc, and Sat). BUT do I genuinely enjoy leading and taking care of people? My Aries in Venus says fuck to the no with my Leo ASC and Sag NN. My Gemini moon shows how I can switch from one to the other too depending on the social situation, but trust me, Iād rather focus on me. I know how to be a caretaker and a leader. That doesnāt mean I actually AM one, let alone like it lol. People are interesting, but I donāt want to babysit them everyday of my life. The people I care about most are those who have earned my trust and are capable of taking care of themselves, and Iāll know that when they ask for help, itās fucking serious. But other than that, my Nep/Ura in Cap in my 6th house said I got shit to do.
The placements that have the highest potential to be productive leaders, if you ask me, are Cancers, Virgos, Aquariuses, Libras, and Scorpios. Yāall keep calling this group a bunch of overthinking crybabies, but at least theyāre thinking about other people with empathy and a sense of justice lmao.
YES THANK YOU! Iām a Leo moon&mercury, and my sun, Venus, and rising are all in cancer. So, as you can imagine, I end up in roles paired with those who lack the empathetic and humanitarian lens and it makes me crazy lmao
Can you do a pluto trine ascendant (natal) please?š§”š§”
PLUTO TRINE ASCENDANT
These types are incredibly charismatic. They have a magnetic appeal that garners a lot of attention and intrigue. Their natural allure goes beyond physical appearance, other people are just hoping to be in the presence of their energy. They are deeply passionate, and this intensity comes through readily. On first impression, other people pick up that the native takes themselves seriously and are not to be messed with. They can get away with being blunt and direct, people find this to be charming rather than abrasive. People with this aspect are intuitive and can pick up on the intentions of others easily.Ā
Slutty astrology observations.
You can tell a Taurus rising sometimes I feel like they sometimes attract more attention than Leo.
Scorpio risings everyone thinks you hate them with the amount you stare. Iāve heard āI felt like they were reading into my soulā
Jupiter on the ascendant people are beautiful they have this glow to them.
Everyone thinks cancer moons are sweethearts but theyāre some of the fakest people Iāve ever met. So sensitive too but they really do come off as the baddest bitches.
Let me say something rq cause someoneās gunna get offended whatās coming next is pure observation and aspects and house placements really do change things a lot.
Sagittarius mars is ruled by Jupiterā¦. The planet of abundance⦠Sagittarius mars has a big ššš. Like seriously crazy unless Jupiter is afflicted.
Contrary Pisces mars⦠the men tend to feel pretty insecure about it tbh⦠also 12th house mars. But they are also the sweetest and most romantic in bed. Put in extra work to make these people feel comfortable. Total romantics. But uhm this is so outta pocket but Iāve noticed these kinda⦠short and curvedā¦discoloration tooā¦
Pisces mars woman though get wet wet.
Scorpio mars are growers and if Pluto is in Sagittarius than Oml youāve won. They can really put it down.
Cancer mars is the freakiest sign in woman these people want to be protected but also like dominant people. Attracted to power. And dominance. All about the post care too.
Cancer Venus lowkey has a lot of cheaters and I donāt know why. I donāt even think they are aware of it
Virgo marsā„ļøā„ļøā„ļø can put it down in the bed ong. They like to analyze so they work really hard to understand your body. They love to know your body and turns them on when your turned on. Iāve seen this placement get turned on purely by giving.
This oneās just a diss please comment good things youāve encountered with libra marsās weāve really never gotten along
Libra marsš¤¢š¤¢ you guys are so indirect and it aināt cute like youād rather get someone else to say what you mean than say it. This one guy used this to try to get me to date him by telling my friend to give him a reason why he wasnāt datable and we all just sat there awkwardly. Theyāre probably down to do whatever you ask as long as you return the favor.
Tw:violence ab*se.
Pluto conjunct mars can really like BDSM the love for pain and overall high tolerance. I know a couple people with this placement and Iām not talking about just chocking. Closer conjunctions are crazy like punching bruises cutting burning. Real intense shit.
Mars in Aquarius are not that sexually charged. And if they are I think these natives can be porn addicts? Idk I know so many people with this placement and all I can say is that they can be pretty private about it. But also j donāt get with people a lot. By choice.
Mars in capricorn⦠I know this is exhalted but be sometimes you have to be carful with this placement. Itās all about working for what they want. They have crazy stamina and can last a really long time tho.
Venus in Virgo are also freaks. Love giving too.
Venus in libra in mutual reception with mars in scorpio would do anything for their partners.
Gemini mars and talking bro⦠like they can be fucking you and have a full as conversation about some other random thing://⦠like dude I canāt focus when weāre talking about your day.
Aries mars can go fast but their recovery is crazy mars in the first house too. They just get so into it. These people are yummmy!
Gemini Venus lovin da threesums or just fantasizing. Maybe u got a side piece.
5th house ruler in the third u definitely got a side piece or your poly? Same with Venus in the third and maybe just Venus in the 5th. Open minded in relationships
Mars conjunct Jupiter can last long same with Saturn
Neptune in the 8th dreaming about that one person they definitely should not be getting withš¤š¤
Mars in the 8th are packing, not to sexualize them or anything I know it musta been hard. But your gunna take your anger out in the bedroom.
Please donāt steal my work and let me know what you want next!!
Iām realigning this because I viscerally agree with the cancer moon statement.. Iām a cancer stellium (sun, rising, SN, Venus), 12th house placidus, 1st house whole house, so I feel like I can see through cancer moons bullshit in a way many people are fooled by and it makes me so so angry. Anyway š
So something I've found hilarious is how many people complain about Gale being squishy/dieing all the time/etc, and it makes me wonder what kind of Wizard subclass they'd give him. I made him an abjuration wizard (I can't even recall why) and his Arcane wards were clutch! He was so tanky he was the last one alive in several fights! And when he could use the wards to protect other people? He saved so much ass on the battlefield!
As someone who also uses arcane Gale, YES! Like fine, Magic Missile does a little less damage and AOE spells will hit your party members too (i think?), but Gale is a tank with arcane ward and is able to protect other squishy characters, slash wear pretty but impractical armor.

Ah so this is why heās like āIām not interested in being in a love triangle that involves *ugh* Gale
