Benji made a mental check of their current looks. He looked positively like sewage unfolding, with mud caking his pants and blood thickened on his hands - either from himself, his enemies, or the man he had to carry for three miles to get to this place.
Ethan was hospitalized. Back-up hadnāt arrived.

Days 3+4 of Benthan Week 2021. While the fic can be seen as 'Completed', an additional chapter is currently in the works to end the story more nicely.

Luther raised his eyebrow, a silent āthat soā in reply to Ethan. āDonāt know how youāve come across him; the ladās certainly peculiar. He has a good foundation; his magic is pure. The Order would want to use someone like him.ā
Ethan grimaced a little, noticing the subtle bite behind those words. He knew too well of Lutherās disdain for the Order. If not for Ethanās loyalty and friendship forged from fire, war, and loss, he would never have found a confidant as intelligent and trustworthy as Luther in the Order, and he knew Luther considered him the same.
āUm, a word, if I might? You two would want to see this.ā
Benjaminās voice was loud but sheepish. The glass was in his right hand, and his left hand drummed anxiously on the table, where the journal page lay.
Upon reading the runes through the magnifying glass, Ethan shared the same unease.

Hello, I am back to the Benthan fandom! I hope you'll enjoy this one, as I've always wanted to try writing a story with a fantasy or magic setting, or just having fun with world-building.

contrary to popular belief, im placated with the volume of benthan we got in this movie WAIT BEFORE YOU BOO ME OFF THE STAGE PLEASE LISTEN! LISTEN TO ME
I understand TFR as a final for everyone, a conclusion to their arcs. Ethan fought with the regret of his past, and in the end he is validated by the closest people to him (Julia in FO, then Luther in TFR) that all of his actions were for a reason, were not a waste, he didn't gamble on the life of billions just for a few, he did it for the people he would never meet. Those who understand will always choose to stick by him, and when they can no longer do so, they will still love him.
Benji grew with every wound, hurt, and trauma he received. He knowingly accepted this, declared it to the person who inspired him to go to this dangerous path; and in the end, one of the very few people who not only understand Ethan - understand his ideas, drives, virtues, vices - but also fulfilled his responsibilities, taking the mantle Ethan handed to him wonderfully. What everyone could not do, Ethan would. What Ethan could not do, Benji would.
Also has no one mentioned how they touched each other every time they had the chance to be together? Like, Ethan's hands would grasp any part of Benji he could reach (the only times he kept his hands to himself were during the cockpit debrief, and before raiding the doomsday vault). Their synergy with each other is flawless, literally following each other's plan with just a few seconds of communication. Heck, the glance(TM) was back too!
What I'm saying is: While I'd love to see that forehead touching scene played out, I'm satisfied with what we've been given. Also, this is my job to fill in the blank as a fanfic writer lol

Marathon the entire MI movies up to FO while traveling abroad and the slow burn between ethan & benji is still so insane to me. You got the meets, the conflict, the reunion, the slow bonding, the hurt-him-and-iāll-kill-you, the uplifting banter despite the tense circumstances. The Unyielding Trust(TM) between the two. The Heart Eyes.
Iāve seen romance movies enough to know what this pattern looks like.
On my 3rd rewatch of FO during my long flight i notice sth: MI1 & FO use the same line of opening, but the roles are somewhat subverted
- In MI1, Claire asking Ethan āDid we get it?ā followed by Ethan āWe got it.ā Her pose was placed somewhat identical to her last moment in the film. Of all the people in his team, Claire and Jim were the two ppl he trusted the most.
- In MI:FO, Ethan is the one asking instead, and Luther answered him. Later, Benji returns to ask Ethan the question, prompting Ethan to answer with a small smile, and Benji proudly says āTold you weād get it :)ā Itās crystal clear how much Ethan trust Luther and Benji, enough to have them in pretty much every major missions
This is less a Benthan-rambling and more of a thought, on how Ethanās emotional wound from the first film has almost healed by letting new people into his life, and his heart. I love MI yallšāØā¤ļø

Need more assertive Benji. Need to see him with some more confidence. He's always a little silly and a little rambly but after everything he's gone through by the time of Dead Reckoning he feels more like a serious field agent if that makes sense. In every Benthan fic it's Ethan who surprises him by being into him and it's always gotta be this huge self deprecating thing and I think that makes sense for Benji at certain points in his development but I think at a certain point, especially where the M:I series is right now, he's almost died so many times, Ethan's almost died (and has died) so many times, it's just them against the world right now, the world might end also per usual- I just want to read one fic where Benji is the one to go "fuck it" about the whole thing and surprise Ethan is that so much to ask??
