Rendezvous in the drawing room 2026 Oil on canvas 54" x 78"

I paint with techniques inspired by the Italian academic method applied during the renaissance. I am interested in the prized and fabled life-sized history painting, the supposed “highest” of the classical painting genres. I bring myself in various iterations and expressions into this framework by injecting it with my reverent love of the lowbrow, the absurdity of history and the over-the top. A cardinal with playfully dyed hair is inconceivable. Yet, the lives of some cardinals are even more strange, hilarious and at other times unthinkable. This opulent maximalist scene is referential of the conservative canard of equating queerness with decadence and garish excess. While often used to demonize queer communities, I intensely connect to this trope. There is a cheeky power in reclaiming this notion and finding beauty in a space decked out with objects instilled with queer sensibilities. The work is made using historical pigments found throughout the history of oil painting such as Minium, a glowing fiery tangerine orange pigment used in medieval manuscripts.
