@greyroot
listen to me. this is my final message to you. when you are at your lowest a fictional guy will come to you and when that happens you must start putting them in situations. this is the meaning of life.
u ever feel like ur stuck living in a separate world all alone and u wanna reach out or join the world everyone else lives in but u cant and all u can do is watch from afar and hope things can happen for u too but the months keep flying by and u realize u have been isolating urself for years
a funny thing about having a Problematic Blorbo is that you'll periodically come across a post along the lines of "um let's not forget that [Blorbo] is a bad person..." listing their various crimes, and if you have a modicum of intellectual honesty you find yourself nodding along and saying yeah it's true... but it's the greyness of their character that makes them so compelling... At the same time though you have a little Saul Goodman in your ear going "your honor in their defense: who cares like omfgggg who caresssssss like come onnnnnn"
I started out writing in this tags but it got to be too cumbersome, sorry OP you get a reply.
From my particular experiences as a Problematic Blorbo Lover I think there's also a specific element of... been there, done that, don't want to rehash it endlessly, when it comes to fandom conversations about The Villain. Cause as a general rule, the villain lover is the first in line to come to grips with the character's bad actions -- those are what first brought them to the character, yanno? A lot of times that is what's most interesting and the meat of most conversations, meta, fic, etc for the first pass.
In my case, I was a Loki fan back in early MCU. And I wrote a lot of meta and a lot of fic about Loki's headspace, motivations, and character development through his first few canon appearances, as well as speculating or writing out hypotheticals about how his future development might go -- either towards a redemption or further along into villainy, or other more nuanced possibilities.
A lot. I wrote 90,000 words of fic about this. It took me a year and a half.
And then I was done talking about that aspect of him.
So having fans come along after that, when I was speculating other possibilities for the character -- what about Loki in his childhood? what about Loki as a member of the Guardians of the Galaxy? what about this or that or something else? -- having other fans, fans who didn't spend a year enmeshed in these kind of deep dives, come along and say "umm, but what about all his PROBLEMATIC ACTIONS?"
...my first response would be to say: I've already done that. It took me a year and a half and a hundred thousand words. I'm not going to do it again. I'm especially not going to do it again every time anyone starts a conversation about this topic.
So the problem with "um let's not forget that Blorbo is a bad person!" commentary is that it's often coming from people who are, frankly, late on the scene. Yeah, we haven't forgotten it. We covered this material last semester. You're late to the party. We're putting Blorbo in a maid's outfit now, try to keep up.
i'm like if someone who was incredibly clingy and obsessive was also incredibly avoidant and elusive
Clarice Lispector, The Passion According to G.H.
I think its the end of my baxter era i finally got a canonically bipolar character to move on with where the creators and fandom doesnt treat said character like shit
Our life fandom was so good and then it got bad and after it got bad it just got worse. Actually fucked with my mental health worse that it cancelled out whatever good it gave me in the beginning. Such is life. Theres always the balance
Occasionally will still put stuff on here but its not ever gonna be my focus again anymore, i dont think
Simone de Beauvoir, from Diary of a Philosophy Student: Volume 1, 1926-27
Text ID: I observe how much I have matured since last year despite my belief that I was losing myself, how something strong was born from the painful experiences survived and from the numerous minutes that I believed were wasted.
been stewing on an analytical approach to fiction which I call "is this book afraid of me?" and in order to answer this question you determine how hard the book is trying to make sure you don't come after the writer on twitter
