Let’s say you win. You did it. You win the apocalypse. All the zombies are dead and whatever viral strain or evil wizard that was creating them has been exterminated. You stockpiled your guns, ammo, and blunt objects. You killed them. You killed them all. 

Then what? 

You learned how to shoot a large-quantity, slow-moving target with few defenses. That’s not the same as hunting for food. Do you know how to skin a deer? Do you know which parts of an animal are edible and which ones are not? Do you know which animals will stampede when startled? Do you know how to track an animal? 

Then what? 

Do you know how to forage? There’s lots of poisons that grow wild. If you ate poison, would you know it before you puked your insides out onto the grass? Do you know the signs of scurvy? Can you cultivate crops without killing them?

Then what? 

Can you build a shelter? A lasting shelter. Not a lean-to that can blow over in a strong wind, not a pre-existing building that might have holes and drafts and problems. Can you build a brick oven to cook your food, do you know how to treat your water?

Then what? 

Do you know anything about medicine? Can you stitch a wound, treat a head wound, perform surgery? Do you know the signs of dehydration, how to make a splint, how to treat a snake bite? Do you know how to stop the spread of a disease you don’t recognize without killing the person who has it? Do you know what necrosis looks like? Do you know what gangrene looks like? 

Then what? 

Weave? Garden? Sew? 

Then what? 

Engineering? Carpentry? Electrical? 

Then what? 

Metallurgy? Animal husbandry? 

Will you help us rebuild or will you sit on your laurels of being a big damn hero while the rest of us do the hard work of being in a society? 

If your fantasy of surviving the apocalypse is only guns, then it ends when you run out of ammo.
