Soft footsteps alerted Panne to the Shepherd’s presence long before she saw her. The conversation with the pegasus interrupted at this intrusion. Normally Panne was the only one who visited the stables at this hour so to have a visitor set off her fight-or-flight instinct. Her fur bristled. Claws clenched. And then nothing.
The Shepherd that walked was one she recognized although never spoke to. Melanie was her name if Panne remembered right. One of the few Shepherds who managed to tend to their animal companions rather regularly from what the Griffon told her. She thought August was just being polite when he said that but now that she saw the woman here…
She apologized to the pegasus and excused herself from the conversation. Instead she watched as the Shepherd approached the Griffon pen and listened to the two converse. The way August chirped at the woman’s touch caused a smile to tug at Panne’s lips. The sweet, tender moment one that she rarely saw between humans and beasts— but such a moment faded once Melanie spoke to her.
Her stoic demeanor returned almost immediately. The stern and cold expression met Melanie’s apologetic one. She tilted her head. “You are not, man-spawn. I was visiting a friend as well. Although I am curious as to why you are here at this hour. Shouldn’t you be eating with your warren?”
"I finished," she stated simply. August was beginning to purr quietly, the cat part of him making itself known. She continued to pet him, her fingers sinking through the soft feather of his neck. "I was worried about August, here. He's been actin' odd all day, and I thought he might be sick. I don't know what I'd do if he was," she explained. "I thought another check up wouldn't hurt before bed."
She wished now she'd brought him some food, even if he'd already had his dinner. Oh well, he wouldn't starve... "Uh, Ms. Panne, c'n I ask what you're doing out here?" She looked to the taguel. She didn't have a brush, or treats, and she wasn't a rider. "Were you... just visiting?" she ventured. She admitted she did that sometimes, as well. Horses and wyverns and the other griffons were easier to get along with than her fellow Shepherds.

Why on earth
Carys let out an aww and grinned. It was incredibly heartwarming the way Melanie talked about her friend. "That's absolutely precious! No wonder you're so close with Augsut. I actually don't know how old Icarus is, to tell you the truth. He came to me, and we took it from there." she replied, grinning down at her feathered partner. Carys hoped Melanie didn't inquire about the circumstances of her meeting and taming of Icarus. It was one of bites, charges and long nights of griffon research in the castle's vast library. Carys was determined to befriend Icarus, no matter how many times Chrom had to bandage her up or sic clerics on her to mend any injuries. The queen picked up the pace slightly, internally praying for a subject change.
"Hm. It's a bit hard to date them," she murmured, gazing at Icarus. It ws also hard, mid flight, to gauge his size relative to August, but he seemed a bit bigger, physically.
"I'd say Icarus is near August's age, really," she told Carys. "Perhaps a few years older. Whatever his age, he's a fine griffon, your highness." He really was. Did she get him from a ranch? He had all the marks of good breeding. "Was he a gift?" she asked obliviously.

Only in the rarest of occasions did Panne ever got the chance to speak with a wyvern or a griffon, at least that was the case before she joined the Shepherds. These winged beasts were a form of combat for a handful of members. They used these mighty creatures as steeds in battle, utilizing their wings to get the upper-hand, and in some cases, to devour their foe.
Panne did not think much of this decision. Truthfully, she despised it. It was one thing to have a human fight for another human’s cause but it was another to drag these beautiful and relatively peaceful creatures into their war, where they could be harmed, killed, or worse— crippled for life.
It infuriated her. Angered her. But there was little she could do to defend her claim to the human warren. Many of the soldiers claimed the beasts fought willingly with them, why else would they let them ride them? Panne could snort at such answers as the human warren knew very little of animal loyalty just as they knew little of her.
She was in the stables at dinner time. Panne skipped another meal for the sake of tending to her beastly friends. She ensured each were well-fed, that none were feeling sick or feverish, but mostly spent her time speaking with each to learn what they had seen throughout their travels.
To any onlooker or passerby, it might have appeared strange to hear the taguel woman speaking to one as though a deep conversation was being shared.
"No," she said to one of the Pegasus, "I have not flown before. I do not favor heights. It is too much for me to bear but I do believe it must beautiful up there, among the clouds. You are quite lucky to experience it when you can."
August had been a bit antsy all day. She'd brushed him, spoke with him, fed him... But it seemed he was simply in a bad mood. Whatever the reason, Melanie was a bit anxious. August was... she felt a bit pathetic admitting it, her only friend here. What if he was sick? What if she hadn't checked thoroughly enough?
These questions lead her to finish her dinner quickly and excuse herself, and found her walking through the darkened, quiet camp alone towards the stable. After dinner there wasn't much to do, considering she wasn't on watch duty, so she would be free to spend time with August. She wanted to at least make sure he was okay before sleeping.
In through the familiar doors she went, the scent of the barn comforting, like the one at home. She beamed at August, whose head was over his stall door and looking at... someone? Oh, there was a woman, speaking with a pegasus. Her first thought was to turn around and run before she remembered, no, she was here for August.
"Hello," she called gently, drawing near, smiling as August whipped about to face her and chirruped a greeting, stretching his neck for pets. She stroked his thick, soft feathers and nodded at Panne, who she recognized... she saw her in battle at times, transformed, and realized now she couldn't remember the last time she'd seen her in human form. "I hope I'm not disturbing you, I was just coming to check on August here," she said apologetically.
Now that conventions are over for a while, I will be busying myself with a long term personal project. But when I’m not working on that, I’m either watching Ranma (which is now one of my new favorite animes ever) or playing Fire Emblem Awakening. I was going to doodle Lucina or something, but everyone already loves Lucina. She’s even in Smash now (which btw, is awesome). So instead I doodled Say’ri, my current favorite. What can I say, I have a thing for samurai designs.

Carys nodded in agreement. It was a huge relief that Melanie wasn't upset with her or her winged friend. "That sounds perfect! Icarus loves swooping around town." she replied, easing a grumpy Icarus along at a steady pace. Carys made a mental note to discipline Icarus later. He would either go without his precious catfish, or she would release an excited Morgan on him. If there were two things he disliked, it was being denied catfish and having his feathers pulled by a 5 year old. Maybe a combination of both?
"So, how did you meet August? You both appear very close." she inquired, slightly picking up the pace. Icarus jerked forward in retaliation, his mood still sour. Carys patted his neck affectionately in an attempt to calm him. Gods help them if the griffon's crankiness was infectious.
August kept pace, though was a little less than pleased himself. He preferred a flying partner who wasn't so standoffish, and having to stick by this grumpy griffon who was always pulling ahead made him a bit sour.
"Oh, well, I met him when he was just born, actually," she replied. Being hundreds of feet in the air made it a bit easier, somehow, to talk freely and easily. "He was born during a bad storm and I was in the barn locking things down... Must've been almost fourteen years ago now," she smiled, giving his feathered neck a pet.
I tried so hard to do you right when I raised you Lucina…but in the end even I cannot save you from your father’s dork genes.
A wave of relief washed over Carys as Melanie and August zoomed into view. At least Melanie could keep with their pace, from the looks of it. The blonde and her griffon flew past, making a loop back to their side. Carys released a frustrated sigh.
"I am so sorry! I wasn't anticipating such a start. He's usually a bit more tame with his lift off." she responded, running her fingers through her now-windblown hairline. Carys could have sworn Icarus was better with other mounts. He was always calm around pegasi and wyverns, especially Minerva. It is quite possible that he's scared of her dear friend's wyvern, but his calmness around pegasi, creatures that are much more anxious than he is, does not add up. Whatever the reason was, it was no excuse to leave behind poor Melanie and August.
Icarus, turned his head in Carys's direction, waiting for her next command. Carys gave him an unimpressed look. Icarus glanced down from his rider apologetically, maintaining their hover. She turned to Melanie and August.
"We usually start a bit slow, and then we speed up. Is that alright with you?" she inquired. She gently eased on Icarus, who responded with an easy starting pace.
"Sounds good," Melanie nodded. "That's how we work too," she said, patting August's head. He was giving Icarus a glare. "Start slow, speed up... unless Icarus there thinks he has a better idea, let's stick with that."
August, without prompting, flexed his wings and was off at a leisurely pace. The dawn-illuminated countryside below them really was a sight to behold, well worth waking up at such an early hour. She couldn't tell, but she hoped August liked the view as well.
"Shall we fly to the town and then back?" Melanie asked. "That's a good distance, enough for these two to stretch their wings."
