anon asking me about pern here is my short answer: just because i dont like people gleefully fetishizing bigotry and abuse in media doesnt mean i dont think it should ever be portrayed or engaged with either.

longer answer: anne mccaffrey (for the most part) portrays misogyny, rape culture, and homophobia in a neutral to positive light in her work, but it doesnt make me a hypocrite for reading it and Not being a bigot etc. i think the way those themes are handled in pern is interesting in how it reflects the environment the books were written in. they annoy the fuck out of me as well, but there are other parts of the books that i genuinely enjoy and i choose to engage with both. they add depth to the culture and characters of pern.

what annoys me about people who call themselves proshippers is that in my experience they act as if these topics in media, by virtue of being fictional, dont need to be treated seriously. i think it does a disservice to people in real life affected by bigotry and abuse to treat its reflections in media flippantly.
