The twins were not cruel—not exactly—but their games often came with consequences. They whispered in secret languages, drew five-pointed stars beneath their desks, and left sugar-laced hexes in lunchboxes. At school, they were ballerinas with calloused toes and practiced smiles. At home, they haunted the halls of the estate like well-dressed ghosts, always just out of sight when something went missing or caught fire.

They had recently discovered the attic, and with it, the Society of Aristocrats—a group of children who believed that the island’s secrets belonged to those clever enough to claim them. Their days were divided between pliés and politics, between practicing curses in their alchemy playhouse and manipulating their way up the hierarchy of the Aristocrats.

Scarecrow

The thing in the denim overalls had no right to be alive.

Its head was a pumpkin, rough-hewn and lopsided, with a grin carved into. It moved with the clumsy grace of something not meant to move at all. But it moved.

No one saw the moment the spell bloomed. No one heard the soil sigh when the drowned bones gave way to roots, when marrow became vine and the first heartbeat rustled dry corn leaves. In Yoma’s cursed garden, under a sky bruised with magic, a creature was born of harvest and haunting.

It ran. It ran from the forest, from its mother-witch and the dark roots clawing back.

Now it watches over the Cursed Farm with wide, glowing eyes, scaring off crows that never come and whispering to pumpkins like siblings. It builds small things. It sings to weeds. It learns.

It is frightened of the witch with the iron fingers, who will one day return. It is grateful to the woman who gave it purpose. It is curious about the world and all its impossible noise.

The Scarecrow does not understand what it means to be alive. But it wants to.

Yoma

Deep in the swamp where the trees grow twisted and the air hums with secrets wood was rotted, the windows crooked, but the roof gleamed with moss and moonlight. Inside lived Yoma.

Her skin was the color of bruised lichen, stretched tight over knobby bones. Her eyes were too quiet. Her mouth, too knowing.

They had made her once, long ago, drunk on faith and bad prophecy. Her breath turned gardens to ash. Her skin wept poison. So they bound her in chains woven from incantations, and they threw her into the swamp like a forgotten prayer.

For seventy years, she slept and then she awoke. The swamp had taken her toxins now her magic runs in vines and bog water, in whispering roots and jack-o'-lantern light. Her laughter carries like wind through hollow reeds, and when she speaks, they listen.

Sometimes she wanders too close to town just to watch them shiver. Sometimes she casts little spells—not to kill, but to wound.

But she waits. She waits because time is soft in the swamp, and revenge, like magic, ripens slow.

Nikoladze

Nikoladze moved through Grobstrov like a cold breath beneath the floorboards—unseen, but never unfelt. At night, he slipped between shadows like water through cracks. But he is not a myth. He is the thing myths are trying to forget.

His eyes are embers in sunken sockets, small and red and laughing at nothing you can see. His frame bent like wind-warped branches, more suggestion than body, something nearly forgotten by anatomy. When he smiled, it was an error of nature—an accidental glimpse at the predator beneath the skin.

Born of a bloodline never meant to exist, raised in the rituals of forbidden alchemy, he had been molded for greatness by a man convinced salvation grew from sacrifice. What remained was a husk driven by bloodlust and ritual, a hunger dressed in the remains of a man.

By morning he returns to the shadows, repelled by sunlight, by holy things, and, most inconveniently, by the garlic-scented breath of the old woman who unknowingly keeps him at bay. Now he sleeps beneath the rafters of the Flower Mansion, in a coffin no one dares touch.

He killed because the world beneath his fangs was soft and pliable and deserved it.

Ursula Graham Bell

Ursula Graham Bell did not bustle. She made things move around her — precise, fat and short, with tinted glasses perched low on her nose and a prim suit. Most days, she could be found in the greenhouse trimming roses with surgical intent, or seated in the parlor, smoking through a lacquered mouthpiece while reading a detective novel. The voices of her children echoed somewhere far off, like the ticking of a well-oiled clock.

Her second husband, Wolfgang, was a man of posture and pulpit, forever draped in moral certainty. Ursula moved around him like a well-trained shadow — not out of reverence, but routine. She tolerated him like one might tolerate the weather—distantly, resignedly, and with the occasional muttered curse. Love was never a factor in this agreement, but control was, which she valued.

Her daughters were, in theory, hers. Mercedes, the eldest, was all bleached hair and black boots now, a goth-leaning phlegmatic who snuck out to concerts and curled her lip at Wolfgang's sermons with well-practiced indifference. She stayed in the house out of convenience, protected by Ursula’s permissiveness and the unspoken rule that Wolfgang had no claim over what wasn’t his. The twins, Sylvia and Gabrielle, were neat little vipers who knew how to curtsy and curdle milk with a glance. Ursula supervised their days like she might supervise the irrigation of a garden — measured, exact, and never too close.

In spite of all this, her modest beginnings clung to her like a secret stain which she wiped off every day with a starched napkin, but which was nonetheless noticeable, like the faint smell of cheap soap under her perfume. She smiled tightly at temple services, nodded politely at gossip, and never forgot who once dared to look down on her.

Ursula didn’t need to be loved. She needed the curtains to hang evenly, the silver to shine, and the roses to bloom on schedule.
