if half-life is set before 2005, Gordon doesn't know what YouTube is

and it very likely is. In Opposing Force, Adrian Shepard's diaries are dated 2003, and while OP isn't completely canon in the Half-life universe, and some of the dates don't match up to canon dates, it's probably close. the only in-universe canon date that exists is (if I recall this correctly) that the resonance cascade happened in may of 200x. this means that HL takes place between 2000 and 2009, both Barney and Gordon being hired a short time before that. It's pretty interesting too, that in the decay expansion, also non-canon, Gordon is referred to as "The new guy." Most people seem to take that as canon because it's an interesting storyline I guess. Barney befriends the New Guy. The New Guy does what is instructed of him and fucking starts the end of the world and disappears for twenty years to come back as a Jesus allegory. it adds yet another layer of interest and comedy to the Half-Life story.

And like, imagine coming out of stasis twenty years later, everything ever is fucked, and some guy from the Resistance is watching pirated youtube videos on his phone with a screen so cracked it makes the video look low resolution.
