Media is a tool of communication which comes from different sources such as tabloid, magazines, television, cellphones, etc. All of this is media from which we all learn and are informed on the latest news or oldest news from different parts of the world or from history. It plays a major role in the lives of people and of course in the history of independence in Philippines. We often use media in our daily lives since the day we was able to see, hear, walk and speak. We used to watch cartoons and our family also uses radio in those times listening about the good songs/news it has to offer.The media in the Philippines is somehow as corrupt as the government nowadays. Voting is done once every four years. The oligarchy ensures that they elected officials pay homage to them.Journalists and other press officials openly take bribes from the politicians.The elite are the owners of the media networks.Wealth is concentrated in the hands of a few oligarchs.
In conclusion, media is important not only in the lives of individuals but also in the part of communication, information,socialization but also in the politics. As a student, it helped us in our school assignment, research, projects and many more. The possibilities are scaled up to a thousand or more with the power at the end of your fingertips. Media is really a way of communication and innovation in the present time where technology and advances in science and information is flourishing.
The Value of being a Media Literate Individual
We are living in the 21st century which revolves us with rapid growth of technologies such as television, computers, cellphones, radios and other medium for information. Being literate about media and information will give us advantage in our modern world today especially in terms of giving and gathering information knowing most of the false and accurate information in different kinds of medium especially in media. A country with citizens that is media and information literate will gain more advantage compare to other countries which stays in traditional way of being literate such as referring to libraries, archive, newspaper and etc. especially in terms of good governance and accountability. Some other benefits are to improve the quality of life, improved learning environment and more cohesive learning units. Nowadays, people normally use text messages and emails to pass important messages to colleagues and relatives. If you want to take photographs, you can take a digital camera and upload them directly to your PC. Once you are done, you can attach a copy to an email and send it off to the recipient. This way, you can actually share experiences with friends and relatives. It is undoubtedly true that technology is an important part of our daily lives. Life has become more convenient and enjoyable. Our lives had become easier than before.
It also enhances the capacity of people to enjoy their fundamental human rights. It promotes problem solving approaches and thinking skills. Being skillful creators and producers of information and media messages will informe judgments as users of information and media. The purpose of being a media and information literate individual is to engage in a digital society where one needs to be able to understand, inquire, and think critically. According to the Moscow Declaration on Media and Information Literacy, 2012, Media and Information Literacy (MIL) are a "combination of knowledge, attitude, skills, and practices required to access, analyze, evaluate, use, produce, and communicate information and knowledge in creative, legal and ethical ways that respect human rights".
