I’m Back!
Greetings everyone!
First I want to say thanks for taking the time to check out this blog entry regarding my new project. Your time has value, and for starters, that’s a big part of what this project is all about.
I’ve been working professionally for video game websites and television networks since the late ’90s. Hopefully some of you remember me from my time at GameSpot, Tech TV, G4, and GameTrailers. After leaving GT I began work on my next venture and I realized I’m not a 20-something, fresh-faced kid just out of college anymore. It was great to help save people from wasting their money on bad video games, but I felt like I could do much more. So I set out to build something I could look back on and feel like I made a difference for the people who mattered most—a new site that would be something completely different.
I know that you’ve heard this from just about every video game website that has launched over the last 15 years. I also realize that just creating another site that attends the same press junkets, preview events, and conventions isn’t going to cut it. When there are 48 previews based on the same information, does anyone really need preview 49? The answer is no. While we’ll certainly address upcoming releases and ultimately evaluate them, the mantra of the site is if we can’t do it differently, we won’t do it.
In trying to develop a new concept I looked at the issues I had myself with the places I worked in the past, and with those publications’ competitors. At my age I had become disenfranchised with a lot of video game communities. I had also reached a point in my life where my free time was incredibly valuable. I had too many responsibilities for me to glean everything I wanted from it. I have a feeling there are a lot of people out there like me. Those with careers, significant others, and children who haven’t lost their love for games, but simply don’t have the time to engage with them as they used to. These are some of the tenets that the site is being built upon.
So yes, I’m on my way back to the industry, but I’m not coming alone. Marcus Beer and I will be reuniting on a brand new weekly show, and I’m currently in talks with other former colleagues to bring them aboard as well. The site is under construction with a target launch date of November, but we’ll be rolling out content to its official YouTube channel a couple months before launch to give everyone a taste of what’s to come. I should also mention that this isn’t another gaming blog built on the Wordpress template. It’s far too complex for that. I’m very happy to share that it’s being coded from the ground up by Brent Phillips—the architect behind GameTrailers before it was assimilated into the Viacom website template in mid-2012.
There are a lot of things I’m not comfortable talking about yet simply because the name of the site alone could give away its USP (unique selling proposition). So I hope you’ll understand that I’m being a little cagey right now. And I promise you, you will have never seen another gaming site like it. Hopefully that’s enough to keep you intrigued until I start providing more details in the weeks to come.
To stay up to date it’s probably best to follow me on Twitter (@Dinfire). I’ll be using that to make announcements until we’re comfortable promoting the official social media channels. For now, I hope you can remain patient as we try to build something disruptive with the site and content, and unfortunately, that necessitates some restraint on candor. I’ve truly missed sharing our love of video games and I can’t wait to get back to it!
