Well, I did it! I survived the first shift of my final placement!
And get this -- it wasnāt even bad, in fact, it was good! My preceptor seems awesome, the other nurses seem awesome, and thereās tons to learn on the floor. Who knew? I amĀ officially finished 1 out of 36 twelve hour shifts on the floor. Iām 2.7% of the way there.Ā
I got to see so many things! Trachs, NG tubes, foleys, blood transfusions... I even did bloodwork and a successful IV start on the first day! The med-surg atmosphere is beginning to actually make sense to me. If only I could tell first year nursing student me that I would get this far alive and in once piece...
Even though the shift went well, I was dead tired when I came home. My calves were killing me from standing, and I had a big bump on my forehead from boinking my face off of an IV pump. Oopsie. I showered, ate, and fell asleep as Alex was talking to me. I am incredibly lucky to have someone that not only puts up with my ridiculous shiftwork hours and studying, but makes me yummy dinner and doesnāt mind when I doze off mid convo ā„ā„ā„. 2019 is a year forĀ never taking things or people for granted, especially Alex.
Surviving this clinical means self care and stomping out self doubt and anxiety before it gets itself going. I can do this.
Iām working my first night tonight, hoping the floor is slow so I can study.
