Tom Guild: Raising the Minimum Petition Signatures to be Delivered to Rep. Lankford’s OKC Office

  Edmond—Tom Guild and a delegation of supporters will present petition signatures to raise the minimum wage to $10.10 to Rep. James Lankford’s Oklahoma City office, 1015 N. Broadway, Suite 310, on Wednesday February 5 at 2:30 p.m.  Tom and others will speak briefly with the press on the first floor before proceeding to Lankford’s office.

  “I strongly favor raising the minimum wage to help those who are struggling to make ends meet and to pay their bills.  It is currently set at $7.25 an hour.  There is a current proposal in Congress that calls for raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour.  I support this proposal.  If the minimum wage had kept pace with increased worker productivity since the late 1960's, it would now be $18.67.  The $10.10 proposal is a good step in the right direction.  Raising the wage to $10.10 would put billions of dollars into workers' pockets to spend, and boost economic growth.

  Okla. City—While Republicans scramble to position themselves in the vacancy created by Rep. James Lankford’s decision to run for the United States Senate, Democrat Tom Guild said today that voters in Oklahoma’s Fifth Congressional District will have only one clear alternative when they go to the polls next November.

  “You can be assured that whoever wins the Republican primary and runoff will do so by trying to be the most subservient to the Republican Party’s extreme, right-wing tea-party elements,” Guild said.

  Guild, who announced his candidacy for the Fifth District seat several months ago, has been actively campaigning.  Along with volunteers, he has been to more than 13,000 homes in the district, talking to voters on a daily basis.  Guild polled more than 97,500 votes in his 2012 race against incumbent Lankford, better than any Democrat in almost a decade. Raise the Minimum Wage & Extend Unemployment Benefits!

James Lankford opposes raising the minimum wage…ever! I support raising the minimum wage. It is currently set at $7.25 an hour. Congressional Democrats have proposed raising the minimum wage to $10.10 an hour. I support this proposal. If the minimum wage had kept pace with increased worker productivity since the late 1960's, it would now be $18.67. The $10.10 proposal is a good step in the right direction. He and the Do Nothing House are against almost everything, except having big government intrude on Americans' intimate personal decisions. I take issue with Mr. Lankford's position on the extension of long term unemployment benefits in the latest edition of the Down with Tyranny national political blog, “Mr. Lankford’s comments and position on the issue are despicable. It seems with him, Christian charity stops with his family, and his wealthy donors. He complains about his own salary, and that the cost of his taxpayer-paid health insurance went up for him this year, but he refuses to help those who are desperate and down on their luck. It seems that $285,000+ in salary and benefits, many times more than he’s ever made in his life, is just not enough for someone of his regal bearing. He talks about the deficit, while refusing to acknowledge that it has been cut in half under Democrats since 2009. He never misses a chance to miss a chance to extend charity to Americans in need. His radical let them eat cake philosophy hurts 90%+ of the folks in the fifth congressional district of Oklahoma every day. He talks about hurting children. What about the children of those who won’t eat or have a permanent place to live because their parents can’t provide for them, because of his unreasonable position on virtually every issue affecting our fellow Americans? In June, the Senate approved a bipartisan plan to fix America’s broken immigration system. This week, Speaker John Boehner and the GOP House Leadership pronounced that plan dead on arrival: “We have no intention of ever going to conference on the Senate bill,” he declared.

Boehner’s decision comes as no surprise. But it does underscore the need for real change on Capitol Hill.

Highlights from our Capmpaing Headquarters Grand Opening

Now that we have had a little time to recover from the hard work and energy we put into our Campaign Headquarters Grand Opening, here are some highlights: We had 108 folks join us at our opening; We raised a little over $2,300; We picked up a number of new volunteers; We had a great time with the live music, food, and fellowship. Thanks to all who volunteered, donated food for the food bank and after school backpacks, and who attended. We had a short debriefing at the office today and feel that things could not have gone any better.
