UPDATE: Ohmygawsh!!! 😁 The family I adopted out Edward and Alphonse (Albert now 💕) sent me an update and pigtures!!! I'm so over- joyed; they even built them an upstairs!!! It's been over a year and I'm so glad they are doing well. I always wondered if I was doing the right thing, and now I don't have a doubt in my mind. They are so happy and so loved.

haha really? sometimes when I’m looking through Guinea Pigtures I see a lot of piggies that remind me of my girls; I sometimes have to do a double take.

Every week we do a thorough cleaning of the cage. All bowls, water bottles, and fleece gets washed in hot water. During this the piggies get floor time and a handful of Timmy Hay to keep them happy. 

Floor time is usually when we have the time, typically a few times a week we will get the piggies out for floor time to let them get in extra running and exploration. My ultimate goal would to have a set up like the lavaempire has for her piggies but unfortunately we have a Scottish Terrier (a breed known for ratting) so they have to stay off the floor for obvious reasons.

Hey! I was wondering if you knew of any good sources for keeping Teddies? One of ours is and I've never really managed to find a good care source for them. I was also wondering if you had any tips on ear-cleaning? One of ours does *not* like it, and beyond training to be more comfortable with his ears being touched, cleaning his ears can become stressful (he often shakes his head violently, so we're afraid of him hurting himself).

Ugh Teddies are my favorite; but unfortunately I don’t have much experience with them. Though I do believe they are pretty similar to any other guinea pig there may be special routines they need regarding their breed.

As far as ear cleaning, I haven't even attempted on my piggie. Which is why I’d like to say thank you for bringing this to my attention; this is something I should have considered for my Cavies health. Failure to do so can lead to parasites and bacteria infections (something I was unaware of until I researched information for this response). However, cleaning their ears shouldn't be a regular thing, having ear wax does prevent against harmful bacteria, so I feel it’s really about having balance. If your concerned about a major build up of wax in your piggies ears I would schedule a vet visit because guinea pigs have sensitive ears so it’s best not to take any chances.

As far as making it easier to clean I suggest grabbing something for them to munch on while you clean them, or some form of distraction.

While I am not much help on this I will provide some links that helped me while i did some research for this question:

Ears:

“Actually I heard on guinealynx that NOT cleaning their ears is bad. You arent supposed to go INTO the ear or anything just the outside. Go to the pharmacy and buy laxitive grade mineral oil in the laxitive isle. Then dab a bit of mineral oil on the ear flap. Fold the flap over and gently rub, give cuddles, a treat or whatever while you wait for it to disolve the stuff. Then take a cotton ball with a dab of mineral oil on it and wipe the inside of the ear where the hole is very gently.” -Onetwo

Breed :

“An important note is that Teddies have drier skin. Sure, you may never have to give your guinea pig a bath if you’re very careful. But, if you plan on bringing them outside to play, expect them to have a very occasional bath. It’s recommended that they don’t have more than 3 baths per year. And, when you do give them baths, use special medicated shampoo recommended by a vet.Teddy guinea pigs are known to build up a lot of earwax over time due to the nature of their ears. Simply use a warm damp towel to clean out the insides of their ears. If you’re still having trouble getting the wax out, you can use mineral oil to loosen the wax before cleaning it. They may shriek or produce other unpleasant sounds, but its important that you do this every so often.”

Can you please give me some advice on what to do if my two guinea pigs don't like each other? You see, today I got 2 new guinea pigs, both are girls and they are both 2 month old. The problem is that one is a little bigger than the other one and thinks she can control the other one. She will push the other one away from things and wont let her drink any water. She will stare at the other one for a very long time and will hog all the food to herself. Any advice on how to fix this?

Fussy piggies; I know this all too well. My girls don't like each other but put their differences aside to have a casual piggie chat every now and again.

If your piggies aren't getting into serious fights (such as drawing blood or injuring the other pig) I’d say they are doing just fine. Guinea pigs are territorial so it is normal for them not to share food or hog the water bottle; it’s showing dominance and that their the king of this cage! 

Since they're both the same age and still young they might be going through adolescents as well. This stage is accompanied by lots of hormones and territorial behavior as they determine their status regarding each other. You may witness teeth chattering, humping, showing of the teeth, rumble strutting (making a grumble sound as they sway their bum back and forth), and showing of the teeth. None of these actions causes need for concern unless they turn into violent attacks. 

Things you can do to lower the tension are really simple.

1. Two of Everything

Water bottles, food bowls, resting spots; provide two of each. This way if one piggie wants to hog the water bottle the other can simply use the other.

2. Exists 

It’s best to have hidey/resting areas have two exits. If one piggie is sleeping but the other decides its their turn both pigs will fuss over the same rest area, depending on who wins the stand off it offers both piggies an exist so that the dominant one can safely take over their spot.

3. Space

Depending on the size of their living quarters it may be time for an expansion. (view size recommendations) More room = less fights. 

4. Bonding Bath

If fights are getting serious a bonding bath may be in order. You may hate someone to their core but if you’re both stranded and scared you’ll both put your differences aside to get through it; same with piggies. Cavies hate water and will more that likely put there differences aside to help each other get through the stress. I would use this as a last resort though, no need to stress them out if there are other solutions.
