Kon B by Gurun Gurun
Gurun Gurun - Kon B [Home Normal]
‘This Czech quartet (Jara Tarnovski, Ondrej Jezek, Tomas Knoflicek, and Tomas Prochazka) takes a lot of influence from some of my favorite Japanese ambient and dream-pop artists, and they acknowledge as much by including these artists in their music. On their 2010 self-titled debut, they featured vocals by Moskitoo, Sawako, and Rurakiss. Their second record is Kon B, released by the Japan/England-based label Home Normal and which features guests vocals from Cokiyu, Cuushe, Miko, and “Japanese language supervision” from Aus. Gurun Gurun echoes the atmosphere of these artists’ music without imitating their sound. In fact it’s even more complex, the entire list of “instrumentation” running as follows: electric & acoustic guitars, mandolin, banjo, diddley bow, bass guitar, keyboards, pivofon, glockenspiel, kalimba, piano, flutes, fx, noises, sampling, field recordings, strings, kantele, vibraphone, turntables, radio, drums, percussion, time axis manipulator, theremin, harmonica, programming & editing, VLF, harmonium, back vocals, alto & tenor viola da gamba. At any given moment there can be half a dozen layers of sounds that somehow avoid feeling cluttered. It is simultaneously extremely chaotic as well as very measured, calm, and steady, definitely has more of a classical sensibility than anything else. Imagine if John Cage and Jonny Greenwood were to do a collaboration and that might give you an idea of the sound world contained on this album.’

Gurun Gurun - Kon B
Back in November of 2010, the Czech group Gurun Gurun released their acclaimed self-titled debut album, and in doing so started a brash and intricate journey into a wide world of sonic noise. With a combination of guitars, analogue synthesizers, turntables, acoustic instruments and digital effects that span musical bounds and blend a torrent of genres, their quirky nature and unique melodic structures were something to behold. Now, the quartet of Tomas Knoflicek, Jara Tarnovski, Ondrej Jezek, and Federsel have followed there startling origin with their sophomore album, ‘Kon B’.
Another supreme collaboration, ‘Kon B’ hosts a plethora of special guests, including Alexandr Vatagin on cello, Irena & Vojtech Havel on alto & tenor viola da gamba, Mikel Etxegarai on drums and percussion, as well as the wonderful vocal talents of Japanese artists Cuushe, Cokiyu, and Miko.
A clash of styles and tones, the opening moments of ‘Kon B’ resound around ‘Atarashii hi’, a sparse number consisting of creaking notes and hollowed vocals. Bristling with innovation and slowly combining into the faintest trace of a melody, it s provocative introduction that intrigues and confounds in equal measure throughout its four minute run. The combination of natural and digitised anthems continues, and takes new form in ‘Itsuka no Hoshi / Hia’, a rumbling, distorted track that bewilders and delights as sweet vocals play with atmospheric overtones, creating a wondrous, textured adventure. The following tracks of ‘Shizumeru / Kiikii’ and ‘Koe / Sukuu’ are hallmarks of the quirky, emotive style that Guran Guran strive for, layering tender, organci sounds over shimmering, dislocated melodies to construct a dazzling display of impassioned innovation.
The last lingering tracks of ‘Mado’, ‘Tsuki ni te’, and ‘Beda Folten Supasuta’ continue the maelstrom of sounds and scenes, with ‘Mado’ reaching towards an industrial edge, and ‘Tsuki ni te’ ringing with softly spoken electronic tones. The last lingering notes of ‘Beda Folten Supasuta’ are moments of wonder that slowly fade into the empty space of silence, and as the last final whirl of music comes to a close, it’s clear that ‘Kon B’ is not so much an album, and more and experience. It’s provocative structure, innovative nature, and prominent display of creative uniqueness might begin as a foreign concept, but it soon blossoms into an immersive world of cluttered wonder, and while ‘Kon B’ might not see the widespread success of modern pop fodder, it will surely have infinitely more impact.
