Guy Gardner Headcanons (relevant to my au 😋)

He is 38 years old! He meets Jonah (me, hi!) at 31, who is 24 when they meet. (I would make myself older, but I fear the idea of even being 31 is... not appealing to me 😔🙏 I just became an adult last year, I can not fathom 31, I fear. But I didn't want the age gap to be problematic, sooo 😋)

He is a good Catholic man. (Honestly, this comes both from my own faith and his backstory. An abusive father who he makes peace with before said father dies? Very Christlike, very demure, very mindful.)

Girl dad, I just know it. He w a s made for it. (He is letting his daughter paint his nails, and she will also be doing his hair, and he will buy her a little treat as payment. Thank you very much!)

Guy's brain damage occurred during his coma (<- from my knowledge, this is canon, correct me if I'm wrong). Although he has recovered a fair bit, he still deals with long-term symptoms. These longterm effects include having fairly frequent headaches, with the occasional migraine, lapses in his memory (occasional trouble with his short term memory in general), trouble concentrating, a far more notable lack of impulse control (his friends and family occasionally have to act as his impulse control to keep him out of trouble.), he is more irritatable and prone to mood swings (though fairly mild most days), he has trouble with his speech (he can't put into words fast enough how he feels at times, so he resorts to snarky comments as they're much easier to get out, partly where his rude and brash reputation come from.), and finally he has insomnia that can range from mild to severe.

The Justice League general reaction to Guy's being married is, "Wait, someone married you? Willingly?" (Based on my coworkers dogging me for saying I'd marry him 😔)

Speaking of married, he is a committed partner. His eyes do not stray. Guy remembers dates, and in case he doesn't, he has them in his phone. He is not the type to use brain damage as an excuse (even though it is a fairly valid one). Grand gestures are scared of Guy Gardner. He will be going all the way out his way.

Prior to being a lantern, he was a special education teacher and regularly makes appearances at his old school and to the neighboring schools in Metropolis.

John Stewart, Hal Jordan, and Oliver Queen, with Dinah Lance as his plus one, came to his wedding.

Clark finds out about Jonah (hi, me again!) after an attack from Luthor in which Guy is injured and Micheal calls him. This is before the JL finds out and is also similar to how the JL finds out. In which an alien invasion occurs, Guy is injured with some severity, and Micheal calls Jonah.

I forget, often, how infinite God's love is. Which makes me run from Him, more than I would like. I suppose I'm just used to love that is conditional or transactional. There is nothing I can give to God that isn't already His, I contribute nothing to my salvation. My need for salvation comes from my own iniquity, my own sin.

Sometimes, I find myself wishing I hadn't found God again. Not as I am now. Young and stupid, addicted to what I am. I feel shame and anguish every time I partake in what I know I shouldn't, yet I feel like I can not help it.

I feel angry at myself for this. How could I not want His love and presence in my life? How could I ever wish He not show me the light so that I may be saved? Yet I do.

Yet, I have to remind myself everyday that He will not leave me. Too, I have to remind myself that, I cannot use that patience and love as a crutch to keep sinning. Still, I find myself in sin again and again.

"Lord, I worry that will not right myself before my time has come to an end." I cannot help but think. This guilt, it keeps me from Him. But I know, in the first place, He is not the one who implanted this guilt, this shame. The enemy, he is who has cursed me with this need to run. For the Lord wants me to turn from sin, not from Him. So, even as I feel the need to run, even when I feel like His patience for me has run out; that I am truly lost and unsaveable, I must pick myself up and start again.

In this path, I walk, alongside Him, when I stumble. I know i do not have to worry that he is walking ahead. Because even as my head is the dirt, I see the rays of His light in front of me. I hear His gentle voice, calling me not to run but to get up. For I am His. I may not have much more to give than the very effort and stubbornness He imbued into me, yet He still delights in it. I know He never left my side, I know He'll never leave it. Because even when the voice of the enemy is screaming at me, trying to deafen my ears to the Lord, or blind me to Him, or weaken my faith. I need not my senses because, as C.S. Lewis so eloquently wrote it, "i believe in Christianity as i believe the sun has risen not because i see it, but by it i see everything else."

I am lost, more often than not, but I am more found now than I have felt in a long time. I can only pray that more time gives me more resolve and strength, more faith and love, more trust and patience. More God.

guy gardner TBI headcanons based on early to long-term symptoms lets go

immediate or early symptoms:

he struggles to remember what actually happened to sustain the brain damage, he does have some awareness of what happened but he cannot remember it clearly

a lot of zoning out and staring off and looking generally dazed and confused, especially in the early days of recovery

he couldnt handle being in a car for the longest time and had to take it really slow with learning to fly as a green lantern because of motion sickness and nausea. it went away eventually but it really fucked with him for a bit

horrible horrible headaches and migraines that dont go away long-term but just got less severe over time. same with neck pains and head pressure

he had a very noticeable delay when responding to questions that make people think he was not paying attention on purpose or not listening, people repeating themselves only made him have to delay again to respond

foggy feeling / foggy thinking that lead him to a lot of bare impulse decisions in some early days. cannot think things through if you can barely think, and you cant process how you feel about your new circumstances if you cant tell what youre feeling.

symptoms i think hed still have long-term:

change in taste and smell, he starts enjoying foods he never used to and hating ones he always liked. he doesnt notice until h-girl points it out. his smell is just bad. he can barely smell anything including himself.

difficulties concentrating in general but especially in hand with difficulty reading. acquired dyslexia for sure. he constantly is asking terrific to read stuff to him because he just cant stay patient enough to get through the jumbles

short term memory issues like forgetting where he put things, but i think its mostly that he misremembers conversations or forgets them entirely

executive function issues. it almost makes people think he has ADHD or ADD (and he likely does) but theres obviously something more going on.

on the ADHD/ADD and TBI symptom overlap again i think hes highly distractable once he regains his general ability to focus in conversation. constantly jumping topics, you can get him to forget he was talking about something by bringing up something else, it just has to be of interest to him or he'll double down on the initial topic

gets tired for no reason sometimes. king. also has bouts of insomnia maybe. if he cant sleep he'll do tasks and chores around the HQ to his best ability

he is sooooo sensitive to loud noises i think he wears something to dampen sound while hes out and about. constructed ear plugs for the overstimulated princess

finally ofc the canon personality change to being more blunt and insanely confident, but more importantly he has irritability on top of mood swings. like a lot. bouncing off that point, i think hgirl and terrific try to be aware of this. they try not to take anything he says in these swings too personally bc they know he doesnt has harmful intentions. hes just blunt as all hell and a loudmouth on top of it.
