Fan interpretations of SD characters
He has a very delicate character. He hangs in a very fine and sensitive balance that can tip either way to the least of stimuli, be it an incident or another person. His foray into hooliganism, repeated loss and sudden surges of confidence are all part of the seesawing of this balance.
He harbours a deep sense of bitterness which we get several glimpses of. He regrets his loss of two years and feels guilty of letting down Anzai Mitsuyoshi whom he respects. This bitterness manifests itself as the diminishing of his cocky zest when he fails.
Although the above two characteristics are the most outstanding in Mitsui, they are usually not noticed. The most noticeable are his hot-temper, violent streak and proud exterior. He is not an expressive fellow. But he is not one who take things lying either. He possesses a strong sense of rivalry. Anger is his most expressed emotion; the scowl is his trademark.
One interesting point to note is his dislike of praises and flatteries, especially loud ones, by people he knows. He used to be quite a show-off.
Mitsui did very badly in school. He is neither stupid nor slow. In fact, he has an agile mind. His poor grades seem to have more to do with his laziness.
Perhaps it is all that he had been through or maybe it is the lack of competitors, Mitsui gives one a feeling that he is old and mature. His character is one of the rare ones we see such drastic changes or should I say developments and such complexity.
He has a very ugly character. He is boorish, obnoxious, offensive, intrusive, a bad loser, impatient, stupid, idiotic, arrogant and conceited. His relish for the limelight and general disrespect for everything and total lack of social consciousness make the situation worse. He is extremely self-opinionated and has absolutely no qualms voicing or carrying out his thoughts and ideas, be it encouraging others to foul during games, cursing Rukawa Kaede's freethrows during matches, etc. But he does not really mind being proven wrong because he easily forgets what he had said earlier and just carry on with what he most recently think is right. Just do not try to tell him that he is inferior to anyone, his ego is too big and memory too good for that.
He has a very short attention span, especially for things he is not interested in and is easily distracted, usually by things he finds interesting. But somehow, people do not usually hate or even dislike him. They can be exasperated, irritated beyond expression, disgusted, dumbfounded or even traumatised by him, yet seldom does anyone detest him outright.
Sakuragi has his own logic which is very weird and seems logical only to himself (Editor: Sounds like someone I know.) because it is based on certain facts that only he subscribes to. Like Kiyota Nobunaga, he possesses a self-centredness and hot-bloodedness which gives him a childish cast despite his size. He is an idiot but is a very passionate one.
Although he is rather rough with his friends, his loyalty and fierce protectiveness are clearly observable. And, I do not know if this helps in his popularity rating, he can be rather shy with girls. Finally, despite everything, he does make you laugh.
If Rukawa Kaede speaks his mind more often, he would become remarkably like Sakuragi Hanamichi. He is also abrasive, arrogant, egocentric, self-centred, selfish, stubborn, bad-tempered and lacks a civic-mind. But of course, he is the quiet sort and more sensible, though not by much.
With his social traits, i.e. cold, unfriendly, expressionless, uncompassionate, insensitive and nonchalant, he gets along surprisingly well with his teammates. Maybe I should say his teammates get along well with him. His skills, confidence, diligence and perseverance gained him their admiration, respect and trust. Furthermore, his desire to win blends in superfluously with the team's goal. Although it might not have been very obvious, he does take part and even help in morale boosting and he does respect his seniors.
Rukawa is very vain; in fact, he is bordering on narcissistism. He takes very good care of himself. If he cares about the people around him half as well as himself, he would be a much warmer and approachable person.
Actually, he is not as unexpressive as everyone makes him out to be. Sometimes he volunteers comments, usually regarding Sakuragi Hanamichi although they are usually unpleasant. And if you learn to read his reactions to various people and situations, you would realise that he is really very straightforward. Rukawa does not think too much so he does not have too much to say anyway. Compared to people like Sendoh Akira and Anzai Mitsuyoshi, he is moderately talkative. He is really a simple character.
