The view has followed me for years and I've grown used to seeing it even though I sometimes cover it with blind but this reminds me of home and I look into the blue sky and see endless possibilities like the free and wild sky. Sometimes the sky gets dark and cloudy and from my window I see the storms and the rain but I don't mind them because I've seen many from this old window.

When I see by the window I see people walking with their dogs with their kids and by them self and also the trees . and that makes me feel very lone because I’ve been locked up for five months because of COVID-19 and then that’s why makes me miss my friends everything in general.

So these are pictures Outside of my House Not the best View But a Good View to see. During this type of time period everyone is experiencing a very Hard time right now due To COVID-19 (Coronavirus). During this time for me it really hasn’t affected me because i never really used to go out like that because every time I wanted to go out i really didn’t had anything to do while i was outside so i usually go home and just play video games

When I look out my window I see a single tree and some bushes. Whenever I get up and look out the window it makes me happy to see that the trees and plants are growing and thriving. Usually when I don’t look out the window I keep the shades close My mood is Drastically changed. It kind of makes me feel isolated, in a box sort of. But when I do have my window/shade open my mood changes for the better because I get to see all the living organisms in the trees, like the birds for the squirrels. I also get to see the flowers that bloom on the tree. I don’t think I would change my view, if I had to I would probably make it more lush more vibrant colored flowers or any really fragrant flowers so when I get A breeze in my room smells like I’m in a flower shop or something. In cities there’s not a lot of greenery, there’s mainly tall buildings shops bodegas, I would like to see more gardens or just greenery in general around the city.

What I see everyday is a big tree surrounded by a “Forest”. I like this view sometimes but when its really sunny out this view is perfect because I don't like having much light in my room so this tree helps block too much sun from coming in. If I could change this view I would rather have a view by a beach. Self-isolation do to Covid-19 has been great for me in my opinion because I've been focusing on myself more and trying to improve on many different things.

Looking ourside my window, I see a parking lot. Along the lot is a metal barracade and a wooden fence. When I look up I see wooden poles and power lines. If I wanted to look at something green and vibrant, my only options are to look at the single tree to the right or the recycling bin lid. I try to avoid looking outside because it makes me feel bored and grey. When I imagine looking out my window I picture lots of flowers, plants, and grass. MORE COLOR!

This is the view from my kitchen in Medford. This is the view I’ve seen every day since I left my home in Georgia back at the beginning of June. I feel fortunate for the beautiful trees on my street, for my neighbors’ neatly tended flower pots, but I look around and am reminded that my experience in quarantine has been a solitary one. Most of the houses on my street belong to families or 30-something year-olds; there really aren’t that many college students like me. The pandemic scattered all my friends across the country, tearing apart the supportive little community that had once been such a big part of why I call this place home.
So, the past few months have been a period of re-learning. Re-learning how to take care of myself, but this time without my daily dose of smiles and jokes. Re-learning how to navigate unprecedented stressors and find pockets of happiness, but this time through a quiet bike ride or an afternoon relaxing alone on the field.
I miss my friends and my community. It has been a challenge trying to keep my chin up in an empty house or to keep laughing when video chat crashes for the hundredth time. But, I’m growing through all of this. I’m learning that while “great” is great, things can just be “fine” sometimes, and that’s actually fine, especially during a pandemic that has disrupted so many lives. I still have a lot to be fortunate for, and even if things are a bit quieter here for me, I’m still really happy to be living in Medford-Somerville.

When I look outside my windows, I see emptiness. Streets where cars should be driving; driveways where kids should be playing; back yards where families should be grilling. But it’s all empty, occasionally I’ll see a neighbor on their porch or throw out the trash but we can both see the separation, we can feel it. I’m grateful to at least be seeing green, the plants attract much wildlife and that has brought me peace. The forced separation has allowed me to find peace and beauty in the emptiness but it hasn’t made it any less empty. I miss the colors of summer, the energy, the experiences, the people.
I miss variety, staring at the same walls, the same shrubs, and the same concrete all day has been painfully unstimulating. I miss the adventure of summer, seeing new things every day. I miss never wanting to go home. I miss seeing my friends smiling faces, new restaurant finds, and exploring new hiking trails. Though at the very least, I’d settle for more green and more wild life.

I like the view outside of my house. The hive of my neighborhood is tight-knit and vibrant, which is a good reflection of the people in it as well. During quarantine, I wasn’t seeing any of my friends, but I would always see my neighbors whenever I went outside. Sometimes we would talk from different sides of the street, sometimes I would hear them playing music in their backyard, and sometimes I would just see rainbows and drawing in their windows. Quarantine really made me appreciate just how much of a community I have and how lucky I am to have it, because when other social support systems disappeared, my neighbors were still there. It also made me realize that building a community as a support system is something we don’t place enough importance on, and I wish more neighborhoods were like mine, with open communication, because then maybe people wouldn’t feel so alone during this time.

The view from my window feels bland. I’m not inspired by the scenery. There is a large dumpster and a highway outside my house. When I’m cleaning my windows I often find a lot of dirt from all the smog that comes out of the cars driving by. My view makes me wish I was near a forest instead. The trees are beautiful, but all the cars, trucks, and busses make it less attractive. I know there is a river on the other side of the highway, but I can’t see it, so I feel disconnected from it. Staying in my apartment everyday due to quarantine has been hard, but it isn’t the only thing that has kept me inside lately. There have been several shootings in my neighborhood this summer and last week my mom’s car was shot and the back windshield shattered. I love my community, but sometimes I don’t feel safe. At least the trees are nice to look at. I wish I knew what kind of trees they are, but I can’t identify them, especially not from my window.

From my window I see the houses across the street from me. I see people on porches looking at speeding cars. My days blur together and fall apart . My mindset is riddled with tasks that have no deadline and procrastination that has no end, making me feel both unproductive and hyper-productive. At the beginning of quarantine I would look out my window and only notice its stark contrast to the view from my dorm room window. I left Vermont when spring was whispering into existence, a time that usually would define a mood shift on campus from dull and dreary to lively and free. But that spring never really came. It’s summer now and I wish that I was surrounded by open green space and safety.-ND
My view from my window is just leaves from a big tree in my backyard, I don't really like the view to be honest. I wish I could see the stars from my window or million flowers or even a waterfall. For a lot people quarantine has been a break from this city, for me it hasn't. I'm a hands-on, visual learner who takes all fast paced classes and takes two math classes at the same time to challen myself. And trying to learn all the material by yourself with just slides and no one to teach it to you has been one of the most stressful things i had to do. I also do a lot of programs, programs who give back to community and programs who give me a break from school and let's me make an impact in the community, programs who make me happy, and programs like Groundwork. Having to be on Zoom takes a lot of the experience away, like not feeling each others' presence or not feeling like we are an actual team because we can't physically be with each other. Quarantine has been a lot of things for me, but being more relax and happier isn't one of them.📷

Mountains to Main Street
Mountains to Main Streets is a program run by both the National Park Service and Groundwork USA. The program is a training where participants from all over the country spend a week at Grand Tetons National Park learning and coming up with their own ideas on how to get people from their home cities out in to a National Park near them. This past week I participated in that program and learned how to create a program by myself. I worked the whole week on my program coming up with ideas discussing them with the other trainees on how to better improve my program. The people from the National Parks Service and Groundwork were all very helpful in giving people help with ideas.
We were fortunate enough to be able to see the Tetons from our camp and saw many different parts of the park during the week. I learned much about the Parks and why it is important for people from the city to be able to see and learn about their National Parks. The National Parks have always been for the people, but many of the people are unable to go see them because of issues stemming from money or location. The goal of Mountains to Main Streets is to not only to get people who have never been out to the parks there, but also to show people how they can go to the parks. For the program I have panned on running I have decided to bring the Summer 2018 Green Team to the Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area.
Teaching Our Community: How to Grow Food in the City
On Tuesday, April 24th we held a workshop at South St. Farm about “How to Grow Food in the City.” Around 30 people showed up and were intrigued about how they could learn about container gardening to begin producing their own food. We started off by giving a tour of the farm and later on Groundwork and Green Team members gave a presentation to the audience. We covered the basics of gardening by reviewing what plants need in order to survive and we continued talking about the several options there are for containers to garden with, and what other resources you need to successfully grow food with obstacles of an urban environment. The audience was very engaged throughout the whole presentation by asking questions, including their personal stories and experiences with urban growing. Overall, the workshop was a success and there are many more people that know about how they can grow their own healthy produce at home.
It’s Getting Hot in Here...Thanks to Our New Compost Heater!
In order to ensure that our newly installed greenhouse would be truly effective, the final piece of the project was building and installing a compost heating system. So, what is composting? Composting is a process that recycles various organic materials - otherwise regarded as waste products - and produces a soil conditioner. Compost is also a great source of heat (as a byproduct of the organic material breaking down), which is exactly what a greenhouse needs.
The process of building the compost system required a lot of critical thinking and teamwork. The first thing we did was drill holes into the tubes that would go into the bottom of the compost. The tubes would ensure that any water and other liquids would drain out, to prevent any bacteria from growing. Furthermore, we installed the panels of wood using an electric drill. The issue with this was that the entire structure was not leveled. We went through a lot of trial and error, until we were able to final get it leveled. The next step was setting a layer to keep everything from falling out. Then we layered the compost with leaves first, then horse manure and finally cocoa shells. Each layer was about four inches.
After about a week of the compost beginning to break down inside the large bin, our greenhouse has consistently been heated to at least 20 degrees higher than the outdoor temperature. It’s working!
Urban Farming Conference
Hey it’s the Green Team! This weekend we attended the annual Urban Farming Conference where we had the opportunity to get to know other youth who also have a passion for environmental justice. Not only were we able to hear from other people’s experiences, we were also there to present and tell people about our own. We introduced people to the work we do at Groundwork Somerville. The presentation focused on our World Crops Project. We got an amazing response from the audience. Many of them commented that they wanted to do similar work in their own communities. We felt proud about being able to tell people about the work we’ve done so far and the effect that it has had in our community. After all the preparation that went into the presentation, it was fulfilling to see that our work had paid off. In the future we hope to continue inspiring others to create change in their communities.
Cider Day!
This October on the Nineteenth from 4:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Groundwork Somerville ran the annual Cider Day at South Street Farm. A old cider press was brought in and people were invited to help make and taste the cider, while listening to live music. Apples were donated from a farm in Western Mass. People took home jars of cider, bought t-shirts, ate pizza, and toured the farm. There were may events for kids as well from donut races to apple bobbing to crafts. We hope to see you and your friends next year!
