Perhaps Junpei should have been used to the abnormal, by now. After everything he’d been through, and after everything he’d learned about the morphogenetic field and ‘esper’ powers, he was used to things not making sense. However, even with all that stuff, they still didn’t break the laws of the universe.

That being, the dead stay dead.

“You… what the hell are you doing here? You should be dead.”

It had crossed his mind that this was probably a hallucination, but he was hardly in the proper mindset to really think about it.

Alright, so that... wasn’t exactly what he expected to hear from this young man, but it was not as if it was unwarranted. With the haircut, he could only assume it was Junpei - his tasteless fashion was missing, however, so Hongou wasn’t 100% certain - but the comment about him being dead were unnecessary, not to mention wrong. What would make Junpei think so?

“There is no lost love here, Junpei, but I don’t know why you assume I’d be dead. You... realize I used my lawyers to get a minimum sentence, so the death penalty was completely out of the question, yes?” He quirked a brow; why did Junpei look like he’d just seen a ghost?

Was debating on if I should draw PimpHat!Ace or normal Ace and went with this in the end… I don’t know why the colours ended up so muted and grey ;_; Since I don’t have a scanner (and am too lazy to go to the library) I guess it might be my phone camera too :/ I hope I can draw all the characters!

With a heavy huff, Hongou slowed down and forced himself away from Akane, deciding to survey the snow for himself and figure out if it would be sufficient cover. Granted, with his wound, it would be difficult to maneuver down onto the cold ground, but he had little choice at this point. If their enemies continued to follow them, they would be killed undoubtedly - but if they could shake the pursuers, it would give them enough time to come up with a new plan while waiting in the cover.

“Yes, I think so,” he finally said, “We don’t have much of an alternative, anyway.” Besides death - which, honestly, a small part of him reasoned that it didn’t seem that bad considering the pain. But Hongou was strong, and knew he could get through this, with enough time to think. He was smart, he could figure this out.

“Hurry. Dig your own hole.”

Without waiting for a response, he got to work. Taking a deep breath and biting down on his lip, he got to his knees sloppily and dug his way through the cold snow, ignoring the numbness hitting his fingers. Once he created a deep enough tunnel, he burrowed himself down like a wounded rabbit running from a fox, the blood staining around his pile of snow like a twisted red halo.

           Akane took some offense to the fact that Hongou allowed himself to urge her on, but she didn’t make a fuss about it. There was no time, and she realized it was quite childish to get upset at a mere verbalization of their despair. No bantering, no quarrelling, and no arguments. A loss of time would only result in their immediate and painful deaths.

           Leaning forward, Akane dug her hands into the cold snow, her skin painfully numb due to the frost as she proceeded to shovel out the white substance. It didn’t even take a minute for her fingers to feel rigid, the only evidence of them even being part of her body being the sharp and aching sensation the cold caused. Once she finished uncovering a sufficient hideout, the brunette heaved a sigh, her eyes narrowing minorly at the notion of burrying herself underneath. Oh well, here goes—

           Or  n o t . 

           “There’s too much blood,” Akane noted, her gaze inspecting Hongou’s provisional hideaway. Something needed to be done, that much was sure, and it wasn’t like she didn’t have an action plan in mind for this. “I hope you’re not claustrophobic.”

           Without any further warning, Akane piled more snow on top of the other, meaning to hide both him and the streak of blood he was producing. It would take a few more seconds, a few more seconds of them closing in, a few more seconds of not appearing in their field of vision…

Well, he didn’t have time to respond if he was, but he wasn’t, so it didn’t really matter, anyway. Mirroring Akane’s thoughts, Hongou also relayed to himself that arguing was useless, and banter would only make them easier to spot and be slaughtered like waiting lambs. He shuddered, both out of the thought and the cold of the snow surrounding him, before growing quiet.

There was a deadly quiet in the air, the silence almost deafening as Hongou held himself still, waiting for the newest wave of pain to lessen before he could even dare to breathe again. He couldn’t trust his lungs, couldn’t trust the blood filling up in them and didn’t think his throat would be able to pass air through it without making him choke or cough.

His vision was growing dark, the sounds of Akane burrowing into her own hole so very far away, like he was underwater. Perhaps it was the snow’s effect, but it was more plausible that unconsciousness was threatening to grasp him. With another trembling twitch of his body, Hongou murmured, “If I pass out, don’t assume I’m dead. Slap me awake if you have to.” He would try to hold on as best he could, but he didn’t think he would last more than a few minutes more. The darkness crept up on him all at once, dragging him away from the conscious world as his body fell limp in the snow.

         A minute of hesitation passed, her legs carrying half of Hongou and herself further on into nothingness. As if she could read the solution off her surroundings, Akane’s eyes browsed all cardinal directions, jumping from one outstanding point to the next in hopes of encountering something,  a n y t h i n g.

         “I don’t know,” she admitted reluctantly, biting down on her bottom lip in frustration. “There’s nothing on my mind except for the fact that staying here will get us killed.” Not even God could help them.

         “We can’t go north, or east, or west, or south, not even up into the sky–”         Her intonation revealing her sentence wasn’t finished, Akane cut herself short. She tilted her chin and lowered her head to stare at the ground beneath them, tentatively stomping down onto the snow. 

         “What do you think, how thick’s the covering?” As ridiculous as it sounds, digging and burrowing themselves into the snow might be their only shot at both safety and a life-saving warmth.

         Similarly to his eyes, Akane’s violet hues filled with frustration at his muttering, the fingers of her free hand clenching. She was getting fed up with his values, how much he cherished his pitiful pride above all, and how he acted as though this was the first time she was choosing not to leave him to die in a puddle of his own incapability.

         “You sound like a broken record,” she mumbled under her breath, her strength not sufficing to conceal how she felt about his question. “This is  n o t  the first time and you know it. Déjà-vu, Hongou. Unlike you, I won’t bother repeating myself–” I guess you could say her motives are complex.

         Once she completed her derisive response, Akane fell silent. She couldn’t let intense emotions get the best of her just because she was currenlty incapable of rational thinking. Instead of focusing on sentiments that wouldn’t get them anywhere, she’d need to be reasonable. However, faculty of reason is an unreachable aim if you’re surrounding by death by freezing also known as endless snow with no potential shelter anywhere in sight.

         “We might have to build our own provisional hideout.”

Ah, but they have repeated this - many times, he was sure - though he couldn’t see the alternate branches. But he was certain they were there, just as certain as he was that humans actually had different faces and he was the one who couldn’t see them. He believed in the other histories, despite being unable to jump to them, or even catch glimpses of them.

But there was no time to ponder them. He shut his mouth for the time being, unwilling to argue with her anymore. Or, perhaps it was more accurate to say he was unable to argue, as the pain was growing to excruciating levels. His heart pounded with fear and what was left of his body’s adrenaline, all while he still tried to keep himself from going into shock. This was not the time! But when was the time?

And Akane mentioned a provisional hideout, and he didn’t quite think it was the most brilliant idea - but it would have to do. What other choice did they have?

“Such as?” he ground out, one eye closing as if it would keep the agony at bay. “What did you have in mind?”
