So. Reposting. We've all seen it everywhere. Yeah, some people get permission first, and shoutout to them for doing that.
But the people who just use a work without credit, without literally anything except copying and pasting their own creation onto another platform—
Y'all need to respectfully get your shit together.
This is someone's work. You're stealing it. This literally applies to everything, from content (gifs, etc), writing, and art. Even if it's just an edit, you need permission.
Some examples of platforms where people take works and repost them are usually areas like Wattpad, Pinterest, etc.
For Wattpad, many people repost another person's story. Or use a fanart for fic covers. I can't tell you how many times I've scrolled through the website and see art that I've seen from Tumblr, without credit, and only the author's name plastered on the cover. Or when I've opened a chapter only to remember "wait, I've read this before. From FFN/Ao3."
Is it so hard to ask for permission? Regarding art, if you found it off of Pinterest, there's a 90% chance that the person who reposted is not the original maker.
Ways to find the OP for content:
When you click both sides of your mouse/touchpad (depends on what you do), you get a menu. One of the options would be "Search [platform] for image"
Example: Google Chrome → search Google for image
Depending on which platform you use, if I remember right each website would have something like this.
Sometimes this option doesn't help a person find the original poster. Good thing there are also other options.
Most of the original art could be found on Tumblr, Instagram, DevianArt, etc. You can always ask people on different platforms if they know the original poster.
If you cannot find the original poster to ask permission or find a way, then don't use the content.
For writing, the original fics would mostly be found on FFN or Ao3 (or other platforms; I haven't explored many so I can't only say those two). I remember seeing lots of reposted fics on Wattpad from those websites, and usually, for FFN you can type a section of the story into the search bar to find the fic. For Ao3, if you think that a story is familiar, it probably is (or maybe the writing style is just similar, which is a totally different thing.) reposted.
There's a history option in Ao3, and you can always sort through the stories you think it may regard. You don't have to try too hard to get the OP's attention, as you can comment in the reposted fic and tell the reposter to please take down/ask permission
BUT: for writing, you cannot just copy and paste a whole fic onto another platform and credit them. It hits the original author more than you think, for you to have the recognition that they deserve.
GIFS: Gifs are usually posted on Tumblr, and it's not wise to use someone's gif for your own uses. If you do, ask permission and credit them.
Make sure to check the op's page regarding reposting/using their content. Some are okay with you using it and only want credit, and others don't want any reposting without permission.
