Various selfies taken by Grand Duchess Anastasia Nikolaevna of Russia (1901-1918) featuring her sisters Tatiana and Maria, 1900s
The first photo/selfie was sent along with a letter where she wrote “I took this picture of myself looking at the mirror. It was very hard as my hands were trembling.”

Edgar Degas, Four Dancers, c.1899, oil on canvas, 151.1 x 180.2 cm, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC. Source
This is one of my favourite pieces by Degas. I love the crisp details on the dancers’ upper bodies, compared with the heavily blended surroundings. The National Gallery of Art addresses how the movement of the four ballerinas resembles the sequential photography of Eadweard Muybridge, as well as how Degas used photographs of the same model to construct the composition of the figures.
