dani cracks a broad grin, no doubt looking fonder than she intends when he wiggles his eyebrows at her. idiot. “’mostly’. tch. i keep you around ‘cause i like you.” a pause, and she rolls her eyes, still fond. “and maybe ‘cause you’re cute.”

“okay, you like me, but do you like me like me?” she’s admitted it and it’s too late to pretend she didn’t, and beau’ll be damned if he’s not going to give her shit for it. no way is he ever planning on letting her forget she’d said it out loud when it’s clear she’s not all that happy with it.

he reaches out for her then, holding out his arm expectantly and waiting for her to step forward. “first of all, you know that me bein’ cute is at least half of why you keep me around,” he grins, unable to help how pleased with himself he looks, “second of all... shit, saying i like you too makes this feel like high school again and i don’t know if i’m down with that.”

“shut the fuck up; you act like you’re a giant asshole but you’re a good dude.” she thinks that half the time he’s talking to her, he’s being self-deprecating as all hell, and– there’s a fine line between when that’s funny and relatable and when she starts to worry, even if she won’t admit it.

dani stretches out her leg, kicking halfheartedly at his hip. “quit being dramatic. seriously, you’re not even half as bad as you think you are. you think i’d stick around if you were?” she gives his hip another nudge. “i’m not putting up with you, dumbass.”

beau cringes, unsure of if he’s imagining the sharpness of her voice this time or not. the look on her face says she isn’t; the fact that she’s rarely so sharp with him in a serious way says he’s imagining it.

either way, he’s not a big fan of it.

“hey!” he fixes her with an unimpressed look when she kicks at him, catching her around the ankle and laughing. “i mean, you might. maybe you think i’m cute. maybe you keep me around as eye candy,” he wiggles his eyebrows at her. “nah, i know you’re not just putting up with me mostly. cut me some slack.”
