Design as an Instrument of Public Policy Article

So the article describes Design as the first steps to making ideas become a reality and concepts taking a form. “Design is what links creativity and innovation. It shapes ideas to become practical and attractive propositions ... Design may be describes as ‘creativity deployed to a specific end.’” Before taking this class, I didn’t quite understand the concept of design. All it was to be was to create things that looked aesthetically pleasing. But knowing what I know now, there so much that goes into designing. It’s definitely not something that you whip up in one setting. Things take time to make, and part of that time is the design process. I didn’t always ask questions like, why? what purpose would it serve? how will this change behavior or an idea? I guess that’s why the quality of my work wasn’t the best I could produce. I believe that I had the necessary skills to create, but lacked the knowledge and meaning to create. I think that’s what separates lackluster designs from really great ones. It’s the the meaning and the thought process that back up it up. I like what the article says about how design is the first steps to making ideas a reality. ART 311D Reflection and Moving Forward

When I think back to the first assignment in this class (the one where we had to create a chair for a Simpson character), I think how quickly we all needed to think of a concept and create a prototype with such limited time. I knew right away that this class would geared towards exploiting our individual skills, strengths, and (quite importantly) weaknesses.

I think I learned a lot about myself as a designer through the course of the class. One thing that I learned is that, though I have ideas, it’s research that helps drive the idea or concept. Researching really played an important role in developing an initial idea to something with more “depth”. One weakness that I have is that I like to jump into the creation part of design without having any information to back up why I made the decisions of what I created. Sharla once said I’m flat, which can mean a lot of things, but basically it means I suck {”-__-} ••• lol I accept that can be flat and I’ve realized why. I learned that I need purpose to what I’m designing. I can’t jump straight into a design without knowing what I’m getting into, the facts behind it, and why it’s significant.

As a creative I feel that I won’t be great in what I do anytime soon. However, I know my best version is out there. With more practice and getting my hands involved with different works/projects, I will see my best version. When I see, I’ll know that there will still be more to achieve. Someone once told me, “Always a student, never a master”, which doesn’t mean one cannot reach a level a mastery, rather one can always learn something new.

Project 2 Reflection

This project really challenged me as a designer and also on how to think differently. When we were given the details of the project I had no ideas or concepts right way. After seeing some of the projects done in the past, I started to think about how my group and I could design something to help out with our senior citizens. Eventually, we came up with redesigning a restaurant menu so that it would be more applicable to senior citizens. So that was the initial idea, and then as my group and I did research, the idea was starting to evolve. The project split into two groups between Moana and Garrison, and Walter and myself. Walter and I decided that we were going to create a “digital version” of a menu (oh btw, we decided on the Zippy’s menu to be our focus). We were starting to gain momentum.

One day, Sharla had asked us “how would it be innovative?”. At first, we didn’t know, and then I started thinking “how could be personalize this menu?”, then I came up with the concept of creating a Zippy’s ID that pairs with the digital menu. This ID would help with the entire dining experience, it would bring a new way of eating a Zippy’s. So what Walter and I did was brainstorm a bunch of features that we would want to see in the menu and the ID card. The digital menu would be in the form of a tablet, it would feature the full Zippy’s menu (we did this because the senior selection was its own thing and we wanted to eliminate its isolation and the use of multiple menus”), dining in and carry out options, the ability to create a profile; this would save information to a database that would include saving meal favorites, personal info such as food allergies or medical conditions, and emergency contacts. Walter had prototyped the digital menu to his iPad pro, which we used to demo in class during the presentation.

Looking back this whole experience taught me that as we asked more questions and learned more about our topic, the idea evolved. I still think this idea has big potential and can be developed even more. But I won’t share that with y’all because it’s a great idea and Walter and I will take over the restaurant industry by storm.

Cause Ads for HGEA

Context: The idea behind this first ad is to exaggerate death caused by overworking, having no days off, no sick leave, and medical. I learned on the HGEA website that before them workers in the plantation era lived with those conditions. Imagine having to work all week, bringing home little to no money to support your family, getting sick and still having to come to work, and getting an injury and not receiving medical attention. Luckily, HGEA stepped in to fight for those better working conditions and benefits. In that alone, they’ve saved countless workers and their families.

Context: This was a fun ad to produce and the idea behind it came to me when I was throwing away one of my sketches. It’s no secret that not all jobs are permanent. People can get thrown away for many reasons, and sometimes it’s not justified. This ad visually depicts what other jobs can do to their workers, while HGEA continues to support and fight for their member to keep their jobs and continue providing their benefits. One unique thing that I incorporated in this design is that I attached an upside down text of the word “UNION” on to the dumpster to show what “non-labor unions” can do to their workers.

After doing some research, I decided that I wanted to create an ad for one Hawaii’s largest Labor Unions, HGEA. A few of my family members are members, and I definitely understand that they provide a great package of benefits for all their workers. I thought, this would a great sources, because of who they are known for and the achievements they have. I learned a lot from the HGEA website, it was surprising filled with a lot of information that I took note of. When I started sketching, I thought about the Creative Brief that we were handed out, and trying to flush out ideas and concepts that would fit the need. The first thing I came up with was the “It’s dangerous to go alone! Take this!” from the Legend of Zelda series. Those who are familiar with it will understand, but basically, Link gets a sword to continue his journey. I like the concept. because in a way labor unions provide a “sword” to their workers. I guess, you could say that the sword empowers workers, it provides them with benefits, and protects them from the obstacles the future holds, whether that be an injury, a complaint, or family emergency. At the end of the day, HGEA protects their workers, and ultimately improving lives.

Project Update

Okay so here’s the scoops:

For this project, we have special circumstances. Walter, Garrison, Moana, and I are all working on a redesign for the Zippy’s Menu for seniors. However, Walter and I are working together to create a separate concept from Garrison and Moana.

Up until now, we have all been collaborating and sharing ideas for how we would want o execute this project. Moana and Garrison are working on redesigning a menu for our seniors, while Walter and I are creating a concept that will enhance the Zippy’s dining in experience.

I wonder how many people were affected by the smoking policies in Hawaii. I remember when the state issued that no one was allowed to be smoking near a building within 20-feet. In the article, a woman named Julia, made the decision to stop smoking after the UK had banned smoking in restaurants and pubs. She put away the money that she would spend on cigarettes and went on a vacation with her dad. I wondering if a lot people in Hawaii took the course as Julia and stop smoking cigarettes. My uncles all smoke but I haven’t see any of them put down the smokes even after the policy. A lot of my friends stopped smoking cigarettes as well, but way after they became legal to smoke and after the ban. A lot of them just quit on their own. I can see how public policy can affect people’s decisions. After Hawaii banned the use of plastic bags at stores, I’ve seen more people make use of re-useable bags for their shopping. I’m sure people have been using them even before the ban, but I think that this kind of influence makes people take action.

Article #1: Typography and the Aging Eye

I think that this article is useful, especially for creative individuals designing for public spaces. I found it useful, because since we’re in our second project, which is designing for an age-friendly city, it’ll help make design choices. As I read through the article, I began thinking about different graphic visuals that I see everyday and how that might look to the elderly public. I also thought about my grandparents as they are in that age group and how they see the world around them. Then I realized something about my parents; as they’re getting older, they have to wear eye glasses in order to see prints. I still have years ahead before I start losing my sight, but reading this article gave me insight about graphics and how I can help with producing content that is acceptable for both the general and the elderly eyes.

Article #2: How Typeface Influences the Way We Read and Think

I honestly loved reading this article, it made me laugh when the author was basically roasting the use of Comic Sans for the report. But really though, Comic Sans is such a weird font. When I saw the picture of the report, I just felt a sense of unbalance and uneasiness. I think it’s because I would expect to see a more formal or academic font, and seeing Comic Sans really threw me off. It also makes think that the information isn’t a credible source.

Concept/Theme: Hip Hop Elements

The five items I chose are related to Hip Hop culture, specifically in music, though I chose one item (the spray can) in the graffiti art realm. After I did my digital sketches, I chose the MPC. The one chose was used by the late J Dilla, a beat junkie, crate digger, producer, and legendary Hip Hop head. An MPC device is like small drum machine that is able to produce loops, make cuts, and mimic real instruments.

Benefits of Voting Project (Reflection)

I learned a lot from doing this project. Of course I was interested in the research that our team conducted to gather data. But what stood out to me more was the different ideas and concepts that our classmates came up with. Our team did a lot of brainstorming prior to gathering data. We talked a lot about voting, its importance, the impact it could make, and how teenagers aren’t very engaged in that realm. We figured that the best way to collect information was to go straight to the source. How? By surveying our target audience of teens: 16 to 18 years old. The results would lead us to creating the deliverables needed for this project. Collectively we thought of creating a type of campaign that would teach this age group about voting. Soon enough we decided that we would create a curriculum similar to that of D.A.R.E, which taught kids not to do drugs. In our case, teaching the youth about voting. We learned that majority of teens don’t know a whole lot about voting. For example, how to register and become a voter. This discovery made it clear for our team to move forward with our concept and it was then starting to thinking about branding and the types of formats we wanted to create. Working with a team really made the process a lot more smoother than if I was to do this alone. I liked that my team and I were always open to ideas and we never shutdown one another. I favorite part of this project was designing the branding. With the influence of my teammates I was able to create an iconic and memorable image for our campaign.

UC Logo Controversy

I feel that majority of people are resistant to change. Take for example Apple, the company is famous for their high performance devices and sleek designs. However, last year the company made a bold move with the introduction of their newest flagship mobile device, the iPhone 7. But it was different in a small way that made such a big impact on the community. Apple’s newest device came with no headphone jack. The standard 3.5 mm headphone jack that was available on most mobile devices had disappeared from the famous iPhone. Apple’s strategy was to move towards wireless devices, i.e Beats Solo 3 Wireless Headphones. What Apple did was shocking and caused an uproar of comments on every social media platform. Despite the action, very little people talked about the reason or idea as to why Apple did this. YouTuber “EverythingApplePro” covered a video talking about the iPhone 7 and the removal of the headphone jack. He acknowledged that the move would cause a lot of people to be upset, however, he explained how this would create a new movement of products. The change might take more time for people to get used to, but it’s innovators like Apple’s designers that shape the trends on the technological world. I own a iPhone 6s, which has a headphone jack. But to be honest I rarely plug any headphones into it. The reason is, all my devices are connected wirelessly, via Bluetooth or WiFi. The whole thing with the UC logo blew out of proportion. Yes, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I agree with the author of the article when he says that people missed the concept. The designers probably worked hard. From a designers point of view, the process takes time. It’s filled with brainstorming, drafting, reworking, and sometimes going backwards to revamp the current idea. I’m not saying that the criticism wasn’t necessary. For anyone putting out content, it’s important to get feedback. But as the author says, “let’s consider supporting our designers rather than tearing them down”.

Cheat-sheet for designers to refer when designing your next project for iPhoneX

When Apple revealed their newest flagship mobile device last year, I was stunned by the unique design of the screen. There is no home button, that’s really interesting. Apple made a bold move with the removal of the headphone jack, and then the home button. Prior to release of the iPhone X, I heard a lot of buzz on the internet about how the new screen design is creating a challenge for app developers and designers. For that reason, I chose this article to learn more about how designers are tackling Apple’s newest design.

This article provides designers tips and work arounds when designing for the iPhone X. The first thing it mentions is the screen size. It’s not much bigger than the recent iPhone 8 Plus, however, with no home button, the screen has more real-estate, which allows for more content. With that being said, the layouts can be rearranged to enhance the user experience even more. I really like this article, because I had to design my own app for a class before. Though, I wasn’t designing for the iPhone X, I had to learn about the creative process of designing an app. I’ll just say, it can be intense! I did learn a lot from that class and I’ve taken away the importance of user experience. I think this article serves as a guide to helping designers create the best possible user experience for an app that can be used on the iPhone X. One thing I learned was that you can have really clean and nice elements, however if the user experience doesn’t flow or match what the app is intended to do, then it’ll suffer badly.
