Refills

Breath quickened. Time slowed. Somewhere in between her heart either stopped all together or was beating so fast she couldnât tell the difference. Pulled in so close, almost hip to hip. Hypnotic. A rush. Josie bit down on her lower lip, feeding fuel to the fire. Dark brown and gold mirrored the most brilliant and bright blue. Those eyes held the sky in place. They could stop the ocean in the middle of a storm.Â
âNot a mind reader no.â She shook her head as her gaze dropped, tracing the outline of those lips, that smile. How much more of a smile could she ask for? Could she get by doing something daring? âJust someone trying to make a pretty girl pretty happy.â She offered a shrug and a coy wink.Â
It took a quiet moment for the nervous energy to catch up with her. This kind of thing was still uncharted territory for the young human. Dealing with Nosferatu on your way home from work? Sure. Genuinely admit both to yourself and someone else that you have feelings? Like super intense, wow I canât believe it feelings? That was damn near impossible. Josie wanted to impress her so much, wanted to prove she was worthy of the stars Hadley seemed to have plucked down to sparkle in her eyes.Â
With a grin and a spin, Jo found her way to the base of the rocks. She knew her way around this, had done it a few times before. There was a little trick to it, a way to wedge your foot just between the right two rocks, and slip a hand into the crack that ran up at a forty-something degree angle. Sheâd gotten up a fair amount before a past mishap caught up with her.Â
The feeling in her left hand hadnât quite yet returned. The spidering vein like scars that ran from around her first two knuckles up and up and up until it just barely kissed at her neck and jaw were not the only permanent effect of her encounter with the magical lightning. The first pull had been fine, but by the time she went to take her second, her hand fully slipped from its spot, throwing off her balance and sending her backwards.Â
Happy....well. Hadley was fairly certain this was the first time anyone had placed that as their primary goal. Normally people wanted to make her hungry, thirsty, parched for touch and taste and that was where it ended. Happiness...that had always been something she had needed to dig up out of the earth and pluck from the sky for herself. Sheâd always thought people were exaggerating when they talked about knees going weak...but here she was, wobbling for just a second because Josie meant it...she spoke with such purse sincerity. Hadley was not quite sure she was worth a syllable of it but damn if she wasnât going to drink it up. It was almost impossible to let her go. It was almost impossible not to taste the residue of those words on her mouth right there and then.
But Josie was off like a shot, fearlessly attacking the rocks. Hadley was slower than usual, distracted by the shape of a girl navigating the heights like she was meant to fly too. Also this view gave her a rather perfect view of the humanâs rear and an ass like that ought to be admired for at least 30 seconds before attempts at climbing began.Â
She eventually got herself together enough to start, only about a two feet from the ground when her heart plummeted hard and fast. It was like Josie was rappelling but without the gear. She was swan diving backwards, gravity pushing.
No. No. I just got you.
Her thoughts were thick and angry and panicked. Hadley pushed hard off the bit of rock sheâd been clinging too, instincts on high alert. She landed hard, squatting to steady herself, eyes on the shape hurtling down towards her. There was no way in hell Josephine Castillo was going to land anywhere but in her arms. Hadley caught her, and she winced as her right arm twisted uncomfortably but that would heal itself in seconds, that was no worry.Â
âJesus.â
Her voice came out a gust of relief and residue terror, a puff of smoke. Immediately her eyes were canning Josie for signs of harm, for a scratch, for a problem...had she fallen because something else was happening to her? Did she need a hospital. Leave it to her to try and flirt with a girl and end up nearly getting said girl killed. She let Josieâs feet hit the ground but pulled her smaller frame in, wrapping both arms around her tight. âAre you trying to give me a heart attack on the first date? I mean...Iâm normally a chaos ball but I think you just outdid me Miss Castillo.â
She needed the span of four heartbeats, to bury her nose in Josieâs hair for a moment and breathe her in, and then she was able to pull away just a little, eyes finally catching the scars that started on her left hand and seemed to run all the way up her arm. âJosie, why didnât you say anything.â Sheâs stuck on those scars, wants to trace them with her fingertips and her mouth, wants to kiss every line away. âI wouldnât have suggested we climb right now if I knew youâd been recently injured. I like a little rough fun now and then....but Iâm not immune to the idea of safety.â
