Leigh Bardugo could write 13 books with the Crows as the main characters doing absolutely NOTHING with no real plot other than them hanging out and bickering with each other–and i would buy and rate 5 stars every single one of them.
life imitates art
poisoned Cardan waltzing around the ball room calling Jude his “dearest punishment” and then proceeding to make out with her in front of everyone is the most silly romantic thing I’ve ever read if Im being honest. Imagine being a fae just vibing at the revel or whatever tf it was and witnessing the king drunkingly kissing his sentinel. Absolutely kooky night.

i don’t ship malina but i will associate with malina shippers because they’re hot and sexy and they know what’s up
The way some of ya’ll still stan the Darkling as just a misunderstood morally gray character that had Alina’s best interests at heart missed a few chapters and a couple of books.
LB laid out even in book one how manipulative and abusive the Darkling was. She made it very clear throughout each book how he groomed + abused Alina and was obsessed with power over anything else. I mean the whole of book two depicts a trauma bond between the Darkling and Alina that formed because this bastard literally groomed and abused her. He taught Alina that she needed him, that she could not survive or succeed without him.
That led to Alina’s trauma bond with him because even though she realized how awful he truly was his manipulations were still in her mind. He offered her in each book comfort, told her what she wanted to hear and created himself to be the man she would trust and rely upon.
Yet he didn’t do that because he genuinely cared about Alina. He did it because he needed her power. So he lied to her, groomed her, and made her rely upon him so that she could not survive or go against him.
Even more so, Alina was a seventeen year old girl and the Darkling, a grown-ass man, preyed upon her. He literally seduced a teenage girl and groomed her, not giving a single shit about her in the process. And then he let another teenage girl be raped over and over again by the fucking king, doing nothing to protect her, all for a bit of political power. He then later viciously tortured her for letting Alina go.
This man is a groomer, abuser, and war criminal. He is a villain not some misunderstood morally gray character who deserves redemption or truly cares about Alina.
can't believe i need to clear this up but the darkling asking mal what alina's favourite flowers are and then giving them to her was not cute. it was not meant to be cute. it was a very deliberate display of how he was manipulating both alina and mal for his own benefit. if he truly cared about alina, he would've told her mal was there, or he would've asked her himself. he wouldn't be pursuing her in the first place. it's not romance, it's grooming.
People so don't get how the ending of Shadow and Bone IS empowerment for Alina. The Darkling doesn't get to manipulate her or corrupt her, Mal's sacrifice of love (and his own life) LITERALLY empowers her to destroy the fold and the darkling... and even if she looses her powers, her final act of "revenge" on the darkling is to live a happy and ordinary life (if love can be called ordinary) and to maintain her empathy (despite it being used against her).
Alina also no longer needs to be the special magical chosen one queen to know who she is and what she's capable of accomplishing, sun summoner or no.
Simply Alina is enough to be worthy of love and to find joy.
That is beautiful to me.
I hate how ppl sometimes reduce characters to their romance. For example, Alina in Shadow and Bone- all I see is posts about her “relationship” with that ugly manipulative evil man called the darkling. I’ve only read the first book and half the second but her story is so much more than which man she might end up choosing. She’s literally a kid, abducted from her life and thrusted into smth she doesn’t understand and had the weight of everyone’s expectations on her shoulders. A 400 years old evil and vile man literally grooming a 17 years old is considered a cute romance to y’all? He literally borderline SA’ed her, and COLLARED her. He wanted her as his willing slave 💀💀
I can never understand how ppl preach they want more badass powerful female characters, women in power, and books that have female characters with depth, then minimise their stories to insignificant mere romance plots and with abusive vile men at that…
Daily reminder that Alina, Genya and Zoya are the only ones we know that were manipulated by the Darkling. As Baghra said: He had centuries to master lying to naive girls. Just imagine how many other people suffered because of him.
Character created to show that society easily forgives physically attractive people: *exists* Society: *proves the point*
