ACT 1 SCENE 1: THE SPARKLING MENAGERIE

The Puppet City apartment lives in one of those nondescript corners where streetlights hit wet, empty alleyways instead of brightening main streets. Its windows find themselves with a nice view of the rotting stone wall across the building, all blackened brick and grayed grout, which the audience sees as part of the cyclorama. The scene is written like a memory and so contains all the poetry (and misdirection) of one. The lights are dim. The furniture on the set is spaced out in awkward positions—there is a couch in the corner and an armchair 4 feet away from it. And the spotlight, when it finally clicks into life, hits the mantle of the unlit fireplace, displaying a framed portrait of a girl who bears a remarkably bright smile. SPARKLE almost splits her face in half with how wide her mouth is.

The light also hits the surrounding area, revealing the walls of the apartment. There are three walls on the set: we assume that the audience is the fourth.

The narrator is a part of the play. They will control it in whichever way is convenient to them. You'll understand, won't you, director?

SPARKLE enters from the door, dressed as a schoolgirl: pleated skirt, red tie, white socks. In her hands, a fox-shaped MASK; she puts this on her face and addresses the audience. SPARKLE: Yes, I have jokes in my notebook, I have bells on my hat. But I am the opposite of a Foolish jester. He gives you Elation that has the appearance of truth. I give you truth that is pleasantly Elated! SPARKLE: This is a memory play, and I am the narrator. I stand on this dimly-lit, sparsely-decorated stage and offer you what others will not so freely give: an opportunity. To turn back time, to a period before this MASK. To a time where Puppet City was so quaint and innocent! I ask you now… will you take it? MASK: (Take it!) (Don't take it!) (Listen to her!) (Don't listen to her!)

[JADE HEARTS] - A popular shape for a popular stone in the land of Geo, these Jade Talismans sold quite well. Now, they’re made as a profession of love and desire to ring the New Year in with the company of another.

[BURNING INCENSE] - Even with all the raucous celebration, it is always important to find a quiet moment and remember those who now belong among the stars.

[TOUR GUIDE] - With as many sights to see as Liyue has, join up with a group of strangers to garner the best sights across the city and countryside!

"At least you have a road there! Ours here barely counts as one!"

"Exactly! Should maintenance of a pre-established structure not be prioritized over the building of another requiring maintenance down the road?"

And so on and so forth. At this point, chin tucked atop loosely curled fist, Sampo wonders if it's a lost cause. Belobogians could be a stubborn lot, Underworlders and surface dwellers in equal measure.

At the very least, Sampo Koski is grateful it isn't the Silvermane Guards who've showed up to mediate given, well... There are still a few wanted posters sporting Sampo's handsome mug on 'em scattered about the topside...

(The problem with popularity, hehe.)

Anyway! Down here underground, he should haveta worry overmuch. He's had their backs. (Mostly.) Presumably, they'd have his, too. (Mostly.)

"Friends!" He's hopped to his feet. Hands are held aloft, placating. "There should be nome of this 'us versus them' divide anymore, remember? You'd make our lovely Supreme Guardian oh so sad~" Hands come clasped together before his chest.

"This is just business, eh? The permit's already signed, and most of the materials are already here. Surely, with a few extra hands, we can make short work of this, and then help with that pothole afterward."

After all, if there's anything the Underworld knows how to do, it's come together.

(Ha ha. Just kidding. They're as opportunistic as anyone.)

"Now, who's with me~?"

So this was where good ol' Sampo was slumming in?

Sparkle must say… she's somewhat impressed. Though the frozen planet has dull aesthetics, it held within it a juicy amount of intrigue—even matters as simple as road repair become a small spectacle when the right words are hissed out. People who live on the brink of Destruction, no matter how well they Preserve their lives, would always be closer to a wounded animal than fully human. The Fool loves it.

And she loves this moment even more: she's always known Sampo to be the boring, careful type, but that all will change now that she's here. In this show, she's playing the role of his sidekick—and he must simply take center stage as the star. He's doing a decent job of it now, rallying what people he can. But Sparkle would like to up the ante. The Tavern would hate to know they've performed such a lame script!

( more than that, miss sparkle would hate to waste her time on something uneventful! she should be allowed to play! )

Sampo addresses the crowd, and Sparkle sees this is her cue to enter the scene.

"I'm with you!"

Sparkle steps forward, nudging away two miners beside her, who seem rather annoyed at this pigtailed bother that has manifested by their sides. Against the dim and drab Underworld, her red attire stands out like sparklers against nighttime. Good. Let him see her.

She turns to the group, a smile cut through her face. "Friends, let's not waste our breath bringing each other grief. If Mr. Sampo Koski says to build this road, then why don't we build this road?" her gaze turns sharp, briefly, like a flash of light from a thrown dagger, "Why continue to fight? We're not animals are we, unable to even come to civilized agreement?"

Her words bring about a scattering of murmurs. One of the men raises his voice. "Now who the hell are you?"

Sparkle wraps an arm around Sampo's. "Oh? I'm just an old friend of his. Don't worry about me," she grins, "I'm here to help."

It's hard to tell how honest she's being—it always has. But suppose there's only one way to confirm her sincerity...

His heart was racing -- the guilt was overwhelming , overpowering .

he had already been beating himself up inside over all of this , it wasn't a good feeling , it was never a good feeling in a situation like this . . . it was -- terrifying .

" I didn't -- . " this felt wrong , something felt wrong -- but he didn't know what it was , he knew why he felt so guilty , but something about this felt strange .

he moved forward , kneeling down and reaching a hand on her shoulder . " I'm sorry , Robin . . . I really am -- but . . . it's just not that easy for me to stay -- you know what'll happen . "

This is the part where she'd expect his annoyingly sharp intuition to kick in, where she'd get to butt heads with his pettier, fussier side—but nothing happens. Instead he continues floundering about, stuttering and stopping like a broken record. It seems this Halovian business was more dire than she thought... that works, then! If he and his darling younger sister are going through something, then she'll milk the drama for all its worth. Karmic retribution is always her favorite way to end a story, and if he really did leave his sister... well, isn't that something worth charging him for?

The choice of who to punish and who to spare doesn't usually fall on her. But today, she decides playing judge, jury, and executioner could be fun—and she'll punish his deeds with a crime of her own. This little birdie is not leaving until he's served his sentence.

She changes her angle, begins to pull back her claws.

'Robin' softens her eyes. The tears that had, moments ago, all but hung delicately on the surface of her eyes are now gone. She brings a gloved hand to touch Sunday's, rubbing it in what could be comfort—almost.

"...Right. Of course. I'm sorry, too, for being so emotional. I just can't help it. I've missed my sweet, big brother."

Emphasis on sweet. Emphasis on brother.

"But tell me... why is it that you're in the Astral Express? I never could have thought that this is where you'd disappear to."

She gives him an expectant look, wide-eyed and curious—but hungry, like a corvid. sorry, miss sparkle can't help wanting to get some intel!

The Oak Family's once-greatest is taking this about as badly as a person could—which makes Sparkle want to laugh and laugh until Aha THEMSELVES joined along. She does not know the terms under which the angelic siblings parted, but it must not have been good, not if it made Sunday tremble like some sort of child.

The fox pursues the injured bird relentlessly. She's closing in with her claws—now how best to strike without letting him fly away?

'Robin' whimpers. She wraps her arms around her torso, closing herself in with hunched shoulders. She's about to cry—the teardrops look like jewels in her beautiful green eyes. But Sparkle is an actress with control. She keeps them treading the tearline, so close to bursting yet so stiffly held back. Halovians liked their repression, didn't they? Or was that just Sunday?

"How could you think this would keep me safe?" 'Robin' asks, a hint of betrayal coloring her voice, "You know the only times I feel safe… are with you."

History notes down two sides of every war, and the bards sing of the single victor—the song of triumph echoes throughout the horizon of time and eventually becomes what people know to be the truth. The losers, cast aside and forgotten, suffer the stain of their loss—or rise in vengeance, repeating that cycle of war until new truths are cast, new histories are made, and bards sing new songs. But Sparkle's not a bard—she's closer to a jester. And she jingles her bells for everyone.

But to call the whole SoulGlad vs. SoulJoy debacle a war would be an insult to the countless planets languishing in its fires, but the Fool likes her dramatizations—and insults even more! So she'll continue working under the thought that it is. Her goal here is simple: ensure that no side dominates the other, so no one ends up winning or losing. It's a Foolish endeavor, but that's what draws her to it.

Her scheme starts in Aideen Park, where a pro-SoulJoy rally is being held. Sparkle enters the scene dressed as a bystander, pulling a wagon filled with unlabeled bottles behind her. It clinks as she walks, drawing some heads. But she makes no moves… yet. For a while, she simply lingers, watching intently as speakers stand on empty SoulJoy boxes and shout in megaphones. There's a surprising number of people here, enough to garner a small crowd—though most seemed to be there out of a want for entertainment rather than passion for soda. But that's all to her benefit.

Sparkle takes a bottle in her hands, and looks around the crowd. She's searching for an unwitting accomplice—or a witting one would be fine, too, if they were up to the task! Eventually, after a few minutes of scanning, she spots a woman by the edge of the crowd. Tall, long-haired, and beautiful. Exactly Sparkle's type She makes her approach, sly as a fox.

"What's a pretty lady like you doing here? Are you a SoulJoy enthusiast as well?" Sparkle doubts she is, but she continues with her spiel, handing her a bottle, "In any case, I need your help. I'm here to test out new flavors of SoulJoy. Would you mind helping me distribute some to the crowd?"

The Reach of Destruction

Mission Board: Crystallize Thread associated with the Fiends in Fontaine minigame

Black Swan stands on the edge of Fontaine, memetic arm grasping remains of an antimatter head and crushing it to dust.

In self-defense, of course. Never did she go anywhere in search of a fight of her own, though they did end up finding her on occasion. It came with the territory, she supposed. A memokeeper has any number of reasons to be in any given place at any given time, in times of peace and not. Duty-bound to collect all so that it might be preserved eternal, that they had not been seen in more places was less an indicator of where they had and had not gone, and more where they had and had not chosen to be seen. Every home, in every city, in every world, was worthy of a page in Remembrance's book.

This world, at this time, though, has this memokeeper's specific interest. Her occupation supplemented by her curiosity have her knowing a wealth of things she may not otherwise—scarcely did she even need to tap into that to know of the Antimatter Legion. What surprises her is not that they exist; what surprises her is that they have made it to this world to which few of her accumulated memories can attest. In that, this moment, in this world, would be memorable.

Point two always went without saying.

An odd smattering of individuals, those that have ended up here on the edge of Fontaine tonight. She hadn't needed to get to know them to know that—here, under the evening sky in a land where the Antimatter Legion lurks in every impenetrable shadow, she knows anyone on the prowl is more than a little unusual. The quiet near-whir of Nanook's fiends lingers here, after all. All around, really. Unlikely that anyone here would be able to abscond to safer pastures without a scrape with Destruction.

Black Swan rolls an Event (Roll: 3) Reprieve enjoyed; all muses regain +1 HP (Sparkle 10/10 HP, Blade 10/10 HP, Black Swan 10/10 HP, Alhaitham 10/10 HP)

She wonders how long that near-whir would be quiet.

"I am not sure whether to be surprised to see you here, though." She asks aloud, because some faces here are more recognizable than others, and if she does not acknowledge her, she will almost certainly be acknowledged. "Is it that I followed you, you followed me... or something else entirely, this time?"

"You're asking me? What a treat—seems like you don't have all the answers this time." Sparkle manifests by Black Swan's side. A giggle stretches across reddened lips, heedless of the chaos around them—or perhaps thoroughly delighted by it, "But you can save your energy trying to look. We don't need answers. Not yet, at least. Besides, isn't the mystery soooo much more exciting?"

It was for her, at least. Sparkle would never waste her time on anything that wasn't exciting to her. Thankfully, the twists she encountered in this city have been more than enough to keep her occupied. Destruction, in its wanton ignorance, always went in its own, straight path—these Antimatter legion schmucks wouldn't know drama if it smacked them on the helmet. But the choice to invade a city in a realm so far from their own, where the very idea of Aeons didn't even exist? Now that was a showtune she could sing! The Memokeeper's appearance all but seals the deal. Sparkle had always yearned for the chance to beat her—or get beaten by her, that'd be great! Working side-by-side with her was new… but certainly not unwelcome.

"Well, all that matters is that Mistress Sparkle is here to put on a show—and you're in the splash zone. Go low!" Sparkle pulls out a comically large mallet from her dress' pocket, and swings in a wide arc, catching a Voidranger in its path and knocking it to the ground.

Sparkle rolls an Encounter (Roll: 1) The encounter is at Slight Disadvantage (Roll: 2, Antimatter Legion 3/3 HP) Sparkle takes 2 damage (Sparkle 8/10 HP)

She looks around, eyes darting between the chaos. There had been two others in the area—two others which Sparkle would like to call into the scene. Tall, serious looking men, who hadn't run away when the other civilians did. Either they were stupidly brave, or just plain stupid. Either way, those were the sort that were always good to drag onstage! She grabs the Voidranger she had downed by its armor plate. The beast, in retaliation, thrashes and stabs at her forearm with its blade. A smear of crimson stains her porcelain skin. Sparkle pouts, and tightens her grasp, but doesn't wince.

"So sick of me already?" She tuts at her Voidranger friend, "Fine."

She turns to the two men she had seen before, and cheerfully calls for them, "Letting all the dainty girl do the fighting is rude—I'll leave this one to you, boys!"

Sparkle heaves, then with a spin, hurls the Voidranger toward them.

"Now here's a strange character."

Sparkle commented, regarding the drowsy-seeming man with the sort of lackadaisical pomp you should never approach strangers with. She never cared to mess with the side characters, especially when she had a principal cast to support, but this one seemed a little special. His lazy, disheveled look made him look like an easy target—not even the Bloodhound crest on his uniform could make him look scary ( not that sparkle was usually afraid of the authorities, anyway! ) It could be fun to mess with him—and even more fun if he revealed some dark, hidden side!

Sparkle skipped over to him then, without warning, plucked the badge that sat on his vest. It ripped through the fabric slightly, but Sparkle didn't even wince.

"This—" she lifted up the insignia, her thumb brushing over the sterling silver, "can't be real, can it? Are you actually a cop or some homeless dude pretending to be one?"

The fabric ripped in the kind of way that could be felt, rather than heard - fangs concealed behind a smile. Hers, as much as his.

”Without jobs, aren’t we all homeless?” The remark came out cold, unaware of its own absurdity, as Gallagher swung his arm over the back of the bench where he’d decided to take a break. There had been eyes on him for a while, he could tell, and so this was as much laying out bait as it was his own proclivity for not doing much at all. She’d taken it, just as he’d hoped, but drowsiness belied the sharpness in his gaze, and to add on to the facade, he cracked the seal on a fresh can of soda balanced on his knee.

”If you’re gonna keep my badge, miss, you’ll have to take on my work, and I’ve got a doozy of a case on my desk right now,” he drawled. “A little brown and red fox sent an explosive to the hotel’s bellhop. The Family doesn’t condone terrorism.”

Two gulps nearly emptied the soda halfway, and melted the edges off his smile when he perched the can on his leg again.

”And I don’t condone overtime. That little fox has until this old hound finishes his drink.”

Seemed her senses were right. This man was a character and more. Sparkle's mouth twisted itself into a grin, unable to hide the Elation in its curl. She loved twists like this—one could say she was addicted to the thrill of a surprise. She pinned the Bloodhound insignia onto her blouse and placed her hands on her hips.

"Alright, Officer Scruffy. I'll hop on that case of yours. Although—" flowery pupils landed on the can of soda that rested between the Hound's fingers, "—I've already solved it. There's no need to be so generous in your patience."

Sparkle grabbed the drink from his hands and drank it. She made a show of throwing her head backward, gulping it down, and licking her lips as a curtain call. She crushed the can against her skull and held it up to her shoulders, letting the litter dangle between two pinched fingers. Then, the Fool leaned in closer, enough that he could probably see the soda stain her teeth as she smiled.

"My conjecture? Some explosives are for fun. And I'm sure the Family condones that, don't they? So our little terrorist, well—she's not really anything special."

She giggled, "But, okay. If the lazy dog wants to chase that quick fox, then he has until this can falls onto the ground. Got that? Now—" she kicked the can like a kemari ball, letting it bounce once, twice, then three times between her feet and knees. Then she kicked it across the plaza, watching with great relish as it skidded against the ground.

"—Catch."
