“I’m just saying, that wasn’t the first time I felt you looking at me tonight.” Lucy doesn’t know what’s making her so emboldened – maybe it’s the tequila, maybe it’s the fact that she’s already felt Tim’s fingers when they were dancing – but she doesn’t hate the way the words sound coming out of her mouth. It feels dirty, in a way, telling the truth.

She doesn’t realize the words have slipped out until they’re out, hanging between the two of them precariously.

“I’m your what?” Tim voice is low, disbelieving. She’s not looking at his face, but she can feel his eyes on her, figures his lips are parted and his brows are raised. It’s the way he tends to look when she says things that have genuine emotion behind them.

Lucy sighs, licks her lips and keeps her eyes down. Tim’s got a large scuff on the toe of his left boot – she’s surprised he hasn’t buffed it out, yet. “You heard me,” she starts, then stops herself. She’s not going to recoil or make it a joke, the way she wants to. “You’re my family – of course I care.”

She listens to him breathe, slow and steady, and chews on the inside of her cheek as she waits for the words to sort themselves out in his mind. “You don’t have to say that,” Tim speaks carefully, quietly. Lucy looks up at him and shakes her head, her brow furrowed. “No, I appreciate it – I,” he reaches up, scratching the back of his neck, and she’s pretty sure she’s never seen him look quite so nervous. “I’m just saying you don’t...have to say that.

“It’s true,” Lucy steps closer, sliding her hand onto his arm lightly. She swallows, looking at her hand over the curve of his bicep, glancing up and finding his eyes on her face. “I’m not just saying it, it’s true. I want to know what’s going on with you, I,” she laughs, squeezing his arm lightly, “I care about all of it – even your exhausting fantasy football stats.”

Tim lets out a low huff, but she can see the smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. “They’re only exhausting because you don’t listen to me,” he mumbles, swallowing.

Lucy shrugs, dropping her arm, missing the warmth of his skin beneath her palm. “Yeah, well,” she bites down on her lower lip, tapping the toe of her shoe against his own, “you can go through them again, I’m not going anywhere.”

She doesn’t miss the way his eyes light up at the thought.
