The recent release of “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" reminded me of one of my favorite ape vs. man films – this 1932 video that shows a baby chimpanzee and a baby human undergoing the same basic psychological tests.

Its gets weirder – the human baby (Donald) and the chimpanzee baby (Gua) were both raised as humans by their biological/adopted father Winthrop Niles Kellogg.  Kellogg was a comparative psychologist fascinated by the interplay between nature and nurture, and he devised a fascinating (and questionably ethical) experiment to study it:

Suppose an anthropoid were taken into a typical human family at the day of birth and reared as a child. Suppose he were fed upon a bottle, clothed, washed, bathed, fondled, and given a characteristically human environment; that he were spoken to like the human infant from the moment of parturition; that he had an adopted human mother and an adopted human father.

First, Kellogg had to convince his pregnant wife he wasn’t crazy:

 …the enthusiasm of one of us met with so much resistance from the other that it appeared likely we could never come to an agreement upon whether or not we should even attempt such an undertaking.

She apparently gave in, because Donald and Gua were raised, for nine months, as brother and sister. Much like Caesar in the “Planet of the Apes” movies, Gua developed faster than her “brother,” and often outperformed him in tasks. But she soon hit a cognitive wall, and the experiment came to an end. (Probably for the best, as Donald had begun to speak chimpanzee.)

Trota circa the 12th century CE

Trota was physician, professor and writer.  Very little is known of her life, but she is believed to have taught at Schola Medica Salernitana, the preeminent medical school in Medieval Europe.  Over the centuries a number of medical, pharmacological and cosmetical texts have been ascribed to Trota.  Today she is believed to be the author of at least two texts, Practica secundum Trotam (Practical Medicine According to Trota) and De curis mulierum (On Treatments for Women).  Trota is listed as the author of De curis mulierum in its earliest form, but it may be the work of several authors writing together.

Trota’s two manuscripts and the others attributed to her were standard texts throughout the Middle Ages.  They formed the basis of women’s healthcare for hundreds of years, but during the Renaissance some scholars began to doubt the existence of Trota or suggested Trota was the pen name of a male physician.  Thanks to the scholarship of John F. Benton and Monica H. Green, Trota is widely accepted as a historical figure and Medieval writer.

Magistra Hersend circa 1249

Magistra Hersend was a French surgeon who accompanied King Louis IX of France on the Seventh Crusade in 1249.  She is believed to have personally treated the royal couple, as well as the female members of the retinue.  In August of 1250, she was granted a lifetime pension by King for her service.

Justine Siegemund (1636-1705)

Although Justine never had children herself, she educated herself in obstetrics and began practicing as a midwife in 1659.  Justine began her career by offering her services for free to poor women.  Eventually she rose to prominence served as court midwife to the House of Hohenzollern (Brandenburg-Prussia).  Justine is said to have delivered almost 6,200 infants during the course of her career.

In 1690, Justine published The Court Midwife, the first medical text written by a woman in German.*  Formatted as a dialogue between Justine and a student named Christina, the book detailed solutions to problems such as shoulder presentation and a hemorrhaging placenta previa.  It also included embryological and anatomical engravings by Regnier de Graaf and Govard Bidloo.  The Court Midwife was published six more times in German between 1708 and 1756, although it was not published in English until 2007.

*Louise Bourgeois Boursier’s obstetrics textbook was translated into German, but written in French.

CELLAT

Cellatlığın geçmişi çok eski zamanlara, Eski Yunan, Roma’ya, eski Doğu uygarlıklarına dek uzanır. Sözcük Farsça kökenli, anlamı “kırbaçlayan kişi” olan cellâd sözcüğünden türemiştir. Osmanlılar döneminde ise, her türlü ölüm cezasını infaz edenler “cellat” diye anıldılar…

Cellatbaşı, idamı için ferman çıkan üst düzey devlet görevlilerini İstanbul’da Topkapı Sarayı’nın “ORTA KAPI”sı önünde bulunan ve “SİYASET MEYDANI” denilen mahalde infaz ederdi. SİYASET sözcüğünün “politika” dışındaki başka bir anlamı da “İDAM”dır.
