One big issue with Vanellope's writing that I really wanna explore in this fic is her sudden, unfounded obsession with the new and exciting. Because for whatever reason, rbti is convinced that she's an impulsive mess with no values instead of just. an excitable kid?

Obviously she's young, and her complaints about learning all the tracks is real. Maybe if Ralph hadn't gotten the steering wheel broken, we would've seen a more believable arc around her falling out of love with Sugar Rush. But the fact that she got bored and went straight to GAMEJUMPING just completely blows my mind.

The only case of gamejumping EVER came from lost popularity, and if you squint hard enough, the threat of being unplugged. Turbo lost something and saw an opportunity. He was selfish and completely in the wrong, but at least the circumstances were shitty too! At least there was SOME threat that pushed him to leave!! Vanellope just did the big evil thing? for FUN??

This girl worked for fifteen years just to get on the track. Predictability is a heavy downside to achieving your dreams, but is she suddenly so spoiled to dream of homelessness over boredom? Hell, she still could've explored the internet after hours! Done new and exciting things with the support and company of her friends. But noo little miss Von Schweetz over here saw ONE GAME and did the evil thing.

I think there's a really good opportunity there to explore her more childish nature, especially now that she's safe and comfortable. Achieving your life's goal leaves you in this weird place, and making new goals is tough. I'm sure there'd be plenty of trouble adjusting to the daily races, the social dynamics, and suddenly having nothing new to work towards. There's alot of cool stuff to work with there. A whole google doc's worth, one might say (evil grin)

I really want to explore her falling out of love with Sugar Rush, and ACKNOWLEDING that she feels selfish for that. After being trapped there for so long, the greater arcade and internet would seem phenomenally exciting- but she's not so stupid to think that abandoning her game after fifteen years of waiting is a good idea. The girl needs a good rant sesh, not a lethal work environment.

It's complicated. She's complicated. But she's not STUPID and she's not an asshole. Maybe a little selfish, but what nine year old isn't? Just let the girl be bored, it's good for her.

RIGHT? HOW ARE YALL GONNA SAY THAT SHE JUST FEELS BORED? HOW ABOUT INSTEAD OF THAT, YOU USE THE CONCEPT OF "SHE MAY BE THE TRUE RULER BUT THAT PLACE WILL NEVER FEEL LIKE HOME FOR HER BECAUSE SHE SPENT HER ENTIRE PROGRAMMED LIFE BEING TORMENTED AND TREATED LIKE A CRIMINAL FOR SIMPLY EXISTING." Everywhere she looks, she's reminded of painful memories and she has to look at the people who made her life a living hell for 15 years. For Godsake, she was a prisoner in her own home. Walking through the castle and knowing that this is the place that Turbo had made every plot to take her out, and that just behind her throne is the code room where he viciously tore out her lifeline. This place has never and will never feel like home, so it makes sense that she left it behind so easily

Your point about her being a child is also valid! Like yes, technically she's been around for a while but she's still programmed with the mentality of a nine-year-old.

LOVE you for mentioning the things that ostracization would do to her head. I had a longer rant about leaving the only home you've ever known and feeling guilty that you don't miss it, but I think the contradictions there don't work well in blog format. Will definitely be exploring that more in Currently Untitled WIR Fic

I really wish the movie had given us more than "IM BOOOORED" as her motivation, because there's so much stuff in that girl's head you can pull from. She's impulsive, she's abused, she's finally allowed to leave and got a bit starry-eyed, she needs a break from the usual crowd, whatever the reason! There's so much there to work with.

It's like the fandom and writers alike can't really decide if she's an incompetent child or completely in control of her mistakes. There's never a good middle ground for some reason. She spent half her life in isolation for gods sake, let the girl be complicated.
