No code snippets...

I was happy with tumblr.

Why is it nearly impossible to add code snippets? I don’t want to fill my tiny blog with external JavaScript and CSS files just to highlight some code. App users wouldn’t even see it. 🙈 Come on we can’t even embed gists.

Well, Just submitted a ticket to Tumblr. Let's wait for that answer aww.

When there is no second screen.

One thing I have to face everyday is working with a single screen. There is no such thing as laptops at the place I work, therefore there is no easy way to plug in another screen.

Although we have large screens, and multiple desktops in windows, one feature I miss the most is always on top windows especially in the browser.

I find myself many times swithcing between the browser console, the editor/ide, and the Youtube window. I needed to fix that. Fast. 

So I created a youtube desktop app with Electron, that is always on screen.You can find all the source code here. If you want to try it, download the file from the project page.

Day 2.

My girlfriend has a blog running wordpress. A couple days ago she asked if I could build something to add halloween spirit to her website.

I asked a few more details about it, and we finally came to an idea. It would be nice if we had a bat, flying around the page, every time the user clicks a post, or reloads the page.

As her blog is powered by Wordpress, and I didn't want to make a full plugin for something as simple as  a flying bat, I decided it will be just a simple script.

Setup:

Simple gulfile with simple tasks. I always need a development server that reloads when I make changes to the code, so I don't have to reload the page myself, all the time.

I also added a dist task that will uglify the code, so I can use this minimised version in production.

Javascript:

When page loads, I inject the css to the document, so I don't have to include both css and JavaScript in the html file.

Then, the next function creates the image holder and the image itself, attaching it to the dom, as the first child of document.body. At this moment the bat should appear, and fly into the screen. 

After 5 seconds, the slide in animation ends and I simply add a class to this bat image, that will make it fly back.

CSS

All animation is done using CSS transform: translate property. 

There is still some work to do (TODO:), I would like to improve the bat movement. It would be nice if it could have an array of different animations, or maybe some crazy random movement generator. With time ill get into that.

Twitter, Spotify and Reddit, and a huge swath of other websites were down or screwed up this morning. This was happening as hackers unleashed a large distributed denial of service (DDoS) attack on the servers of Dyn, a major DNS host. It’s probably safe to assume that the two situations are related.

Day 1.

Struggling with browser push notifications and service worker implementation. 

Almost no documentation for it, it's such a pity. I did found a lot of good documentation for web workers and offline caching. As for push notifications, all the examples seem to be the same, and incomplete. 

I will post some basic tutorial about push and local notifications, once I get it to work.

I'm choosing tumblr!

Targets.

I was trying to choose between 3 blogging platforms.

The good old Wordpress..

The new and fast Ghost.

The old (or is it new?) tumblr.

Decisions.

Has strong a gigantic comunity. Has a plugin for everything. Requires a lot of time to setup, and a server.

Is fast. Easy to setup and a lot of nice looking themes. Still need a server and Database to setup.

Fast, setup. No maintenance costs. SSL for free? Markdown? For real? Im sold!
