brow furrows, not in confusion but in quiet deliberation, measuring what can be said against what still hurts. her gaze drifts back to the page, though she isn’t reading anymore. there is a name resting just behind her teeth, her brightest good thing, warm and unbearable all at once: thinking it feels like pressing on a bruise, saying it would be worse. so she turns away from it, closing a door she isn’t ready to open.

“ i like it when will draws what i ask him to, ” she says instead, voice steady. “ or when joyce brushes my hair. when jonathan lets me borrow his music. ” a beat. almost shy: “ and horses. ”

lingering there, she lets the list settle. a small smile finds her, private, as she adds, “ i like reading with you, too. those are my good things. ”
