The Joined have good intentions; that doesn't matter & they're still evil.
That opening scene in the final episode with Kusimayu really hammered home my feelings on the hive. I believe them when they say they do this out of love and I believe they have good intentions. But, ultimately I don't think that matters at all when the consequences of their existence and their spreading is the anthesis of humanity. The way they stopped singing the instant Kusimayu joined, then immediately left the village. In that moment, Kusimayu's culture and way of life ceased to exist. Their sole purpose of being alive is now to create that giant antenna and spread. That's it. All of Humanity's combined accomplishments, history, religion, culture, triumphs and tragedies, romances, families and hopes are reduced to nothing but a vector through which a virus can spread. They can't manufacture anything new because at some stage, something would be hurt by it. Modern society has that effect on the world, unfortunately. So how will they build this giant antenna? By cannibalizing our cities and infrastructure. Like us, whatever we've made, no matter its value to US, childhood homes, schools, national landmarks, memorials, they exist now solely to further the spread of a virus. They don't care about any of it, Zosia offered to secure Albuquerque's museums just to appease Carol (and when she's joined they'll go back to ignoring them) The Earth's ecosystem will be ravaged by their good intentions to safeguard life. Apples being picked from a tree directly benefits the tree. Many animals need humans. Released pets, especially cats, will ravage entire food chains. That baby goat "Kusimayu" released will most likely die. Those coyotes were probably desperate to dig up Helen's grave because they - as scavenger animals - are now suddenly competing against the entire human population of North America to scavenge anything worth eating. That's what we have been reduced to. We'll starve and dwindle to a tiny fraction of our original population, perhaps a few million at most on a ravaged world to sustain the spread of an interstellar parasite and our only purpose will be to maintain the antenna and its signal for as long as possible before the virus uses up all its host species' remaining strength and we go extinct. Manousos is right. We save the world.
