It’s the end of an era... today is the final day of a legendary independent record store. Skip’s CD World has been a huge part of Eugene, Oregon’s cultural landscape for decades now, and has been a big part of my musical life. I sold my first CDs (of my self-released album “Full Circle”, sold on consignment!) there over 13 years ago, and marked the occasion, as well as every album release since, with an in-store performance, as have so many other artists both locally and touring through in support of a new project. On many an afternoon these past couple of decades, I discovered countless new artists and albums while cozied up on the in-store couch with headphones or camped out at a listening station (I suppose that was the pre-Spotify version of streaming??). This record store was always one of the few places in which music seemed as meaningful to every person there, whether employee or customer, as it was to me. What a treasure it’s been, and will always be in my memories, and I’m certain I’m not the only one who feels this way. The Redwoods... one of the most magical places in the world. It’s so humbling and awe-inspiring to bask in the presence of giants that have stood sentinel for over a thousand years. The sense of peace I feel in these ancient groves is indescribable — all I know is that my whole body feels transformed by the experience. I can’t imagine what it must have looked like to see Northern California pre-1900’s, when the giant redwoods blanketed over 2,000,000 acres of forestland. Only 4% of these old growth trees exist today. This sad ratio makes my heart hurt... but walking through the miracle that is Stout Grove, I am immensely grateful for the tireless and passionate efforts of the Save-the-Redwoods League and all of the conservation organizations that helped to protect as many of these old-growth forests as they could. Thanks to them, these redwoods are still here. #farbackfriday walk down memory lane to a couple of summers ago when I got to play some shows in Quebec, AND I got to to VACATION there, and wow... it is such a fun place to spend a few weeks adventuring. I kayaked in the St. Lawrence River fjords, got soaked on a whale watching skiff tour (hence the *awesome* orange waterproof outfit), rode horses through the fields and forests, took way more kitschy photos than I care to admit, and enjoyed the daily strolls through the cobblestone streets of old Quebec City... just to name a few of the highlights :) Can’t wait to return to Quebec in October when I perform in Montreal once again! This summer has not only been about music and camping (and summer colds)... it’s also been about TOMATOES! As in me, growing a ton of tomatoes... more specifically 10 different varieties of tomato plants that have now grown so giant they could probably eat me... so instead, I’m eating THEM!
