I’m Halle, I’ve been lurking around/being semi-participatory in the writing community for five-ish years now. About page is here. Find my book review Substack, The Lilac Reads, here!

I mostly write contemporary romance and occasionally I will foray into magical realism (or whatever Emily Henry's YA days have going on). Tropes and themes I love are: friends to lovers, stories about family, strong female friendships, and small towns. Rivals to lovers/enemies to lovers will, of course, always have a treasured place in my heart.

my current writing projects are:

PLATONIC ACTIVITIES WITH FRIENDS — After a brutal roasting at their friend’s engagement party, hopeless romantic Will propositions the commitment-phobic and promiscuous Ava with a friends-with-benefits arrangement so he can learn how to take relationships less seriously. She (and their friend group) thinks it’s a terrible idea, but she says yes nonetheless. But as they grow closer as friends and lovers, Ava faces an affliction she’s avoided for nearly a decade: feelings.

OONA + EDMUND — A relationship between two best friends with a whole lot of feelings between them gets real complicated when Edmund gets engaged to someone else. Better mini-synopsis coming soon! This is a Camp Nano project.

THE BANCROFT SISTERS — When Theodora’s life falls apart, her semi-estranged mother calls to beg her to come back home and take care of her 17 year old sister while she and her father travel to Europe for his medical treatment. Her return to her hometown of Hornsea, MA brings back painful memories and an old connection with a childhood frenemy, all the while forcing her to face the younger sister she abandoned to her careless parents.

I think the book that is actually going to get finished is the one I say fuck you to publishing rules. like why can't I write a 300k literary romance that just follows on woman for eight years of her life? 19th century writers can do that but I can't? exactly, I can do that, and I will.

The rubble of a once beloved family attraction, harboring sinister secrets. Aside from the scandal and misfortune that drove the park to its demise, it seems there's something else at unrest.

19. A college sophomore and budding photojournalist. When her professor told the class to "follow up on an unsolved mystery" for their latest assignment, he was expecting the kids to fake a bigfoot sighting, or write a tongue-in-cheek exposé about socks getting lost in the washing machine. But Macy has something else in mind, and she'll go to any length necessary to get her scoop.

25. Childhood best friend of Macy's brother, and an annoyance she's grown long accustomed to. An adrenaline junkie who'd never turn down the opportunity to "go sleuthing." Crafty and creative, wisecracking and reckless, he keeps Macy on her toes, and offers up new perspectives when she can't quite find her angle.

Hey writers! Everyone has their own style and yours is great. Some people’s writing is lush and descriptive and emotional, others are sparse and sleek and powerful, and others still are fast-paced and immediate and visceral. They all have their merits. No style is better than another. It’s all fine.

And! Not all of your pieces have to be one particular style either. Just because your last work was meandering or slow or heavy doesn’t mean your next can’t be sharp or quick or light. Don’t beat yourself up because you aren’t doing what you did in the last thing you wrote. That was a different piece, required a different mood. Do what works for you. Do what works for this story. Don’t worry about what others do or what you’ve done before.

so I bought writers & lovers and there's this essay in the back about writing and she talks about how she writes her first draft by hand in notebooks and then types it up and after a brief reflection I might actually write like this..........

btw you should absolutely read stuff you don't agree with. you should think critically about it. you should reflect and find different stimuli and maybe even form your own thought based on or opposed to it. ideas aren't contagious and reading words someone else has told you are "bad" won't infect you like a virus and make you "evil". read with your own brain.

i think writing is so hard for me right now also is because i just don’t know where i am—like genre wise but also in my life. i haven’t done anything and i’m only 19 and i just haven’t lived much at all, or i’m in the middle of things happening and i need to be farther away from it maybe? and i do not want to write ya and i feel incapable of writing about college while i’m in it but i feel so ridiculous writing about people so much older than me so just. what do i do?
