Pssst, hey! Do you wanna play Halo Custom Edition? Well, here's how.
First off, what's Halo Custom Edition? Halo Custom Edition is a standalone version of Halo Combat Evolved PC that was made exclusively for multiplayer and has more features for the mode, compared to base Halo CE. It was released on May 5th, by Gearbox software.
This guide serves as a simple and easy guide to installing the game and setting it up for multiplayer. (On Windows Computers) It also serves as a way of spreading Halo Custom Edition to new players.
How do I get/install Halo Custom Edition?
Pretty easily, download links for the game can be found in a variety of locations. The main website is halo maps, linked below.
NOTE: If you run the installer for the game, you're computer might restart, so just be wary of that.
Once you download the file, run, accept to run, whatever your machine asks of you. You will then be presented to a screen that asks you to either "install" or "web connection." Hit install. After this, wait a few seconds and then you will be asked for a CD Key.
Now, if you already have a CD Key for Halo CE PC, use that but if you don't. Well, this is a game that came out a little over 20 years ago, so I'm sure you can find a CD Key for this game online, through obvious legal means for course! Anyway, once you have gotten your CD Key and put it in the textboxes, hit next. You will then be presented with this screen.
The base install directory is C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Games\Halo Custom Edition, this can be changed with the change, though I recommend keeping it to the default. I'd also recommended creating a Desktop shortcut, as it will be user later. You can install for all users if you want, and don't install GameSpy, it doesn't work anymore.
After hitting install, and letting the game install, the installer will ask you if you want to play the game, decline and exit out of the installer. Now you need the 1.0.10 path for the game which is found in the link below.
Download the file, open the file, and put the haloce-patch-1.0.10 executable in the same folder where halo custom edition was installed. Run the executable mentioned above, and accept all the prompts, and wait for the update to finish. Now, you should be good to play the game and join some multiplayer matches, however the game will run just like it did when it came out, with most of the game running like so. To get the game running nice on current hardware, I recommend Chimera.
Chimera, aka how to make the game playable today
Chimera is a mod for Halo Custom Edition that is largely considered, the update it needed but never got. I won't list all the features, as most need to be enabled, but they overall enhance the game with things like fov and general hud support, automatic custom map downloading from servers, higher fps limit, graphics fixes, a better custom browser, and a ton of additional features. To install the mod, it can be found in the github below.
The update to Halo PC that never was. Contribute to SnowyMouse/chimera development by creating an account on GitHub.
Go to releases, select the newest version, and download the top file. Then, go to your halo custom edition folder, change the strings.dll already in the folder to a different name, move all the files from the chimera download in to the directory, and you should be all set. Just make sure to run the game from the desktop shortcut.
There's still a ton I didn't go over, setting up campaign, getting custom maps, the HEK, opensauce, etc. But this just servers as a simple tutorial to get the game set up and in a playable state.
If you run into any issues, would like help testing the multiplayer, or want to offer feedback on this guide, just DM me and I should get back to you. Don't worry, I don't bite...too much.
Note
For everyone that follows this blog, sorry for not keeping up with posting atm. I've been busy and burnt out, (by doing daily uploads for this), so posts will now be more infrequent. I'll still try and do multiple posts a week, but definitely not daily.
