Something that I feel like people miss about acephobia is the idea is that sexual attraction is treated as a developmental milestone for children. I got made fun of as a kid for my crushes and felt a lot of guilt and shame about them, and the thing that adults would tell me to reassure me is that they’d actually be concerned if I DIDN’T have any crushes by this age, that it was normal and “healthy”. Hearing that I always assumed as a kid that there was a real illness or health problem associated with a lack of romantic/sexual attraction (untrue, but you get why I might assume this, right?). People don’t tend to claim that asexuality is unhealthy outright, but the pseudoscience of vibes-based “proper development” is still there and it still affects our perception of ourselves growing up. Saying that asexuals feel “broken” or “wrong” is true but it doesn’t even cover the pseudoscience of it all. The idea that parents should be concerned if their kid’s vibe is off, which trans and gay kids face as well. There is nothing missing if you didn’t have crushes as a child. You are not any more different than we all are from each other.
