In Greek mythology, Atlas was condemned to hold up the heavens for eternity after the Titanomachy, the war between the Titans and the Olympian gods.
The statue is a prominent feature of the Royal Palace, which was opened in 1655.
The sphere he holds is decorated with golden stars representing constellations.
