The world around the Crystal Gems had changed so much the past few decades, as the residents of the area near their temple rebelled against their leader and split off into a new country. “America”, they called it. Well, it did have a unique ring to it.

Garnet decided to head into the newly established Empire City to see what life was like there, and to check for any corrupted Gems roaming around. Thank goodness the humans hadn’t touched any of their warp pads.

As she walked through the streets in clothes that matched the current style, she bumped into an important looking man wearing a green suit. She looked down at him as she moved out of his way.

“My bad, sir. Apologies.”

Alexander, who was walking down the street carrying an armful of books, felt someone bump into him, causing him to drop the books.  As he bent over to pick them up, he glanced up at Garnet.

“It’s all right.  But do try to watch where you’re going.”

“Please, allow me,” Garnet said, bending down to pick up the man’s many books before handing them back to him. “I probably should’ve watched where I was going. I’m sorry.”

She glanced over the man, figuring it couldn’t hurt to at least learn his name. “You seem very busy, sir. What’s your name?”

“I’m Alexander Hamilton. And you are...?”

General Washington twitched his tail. “Washed it off in rivers or snow.” He rumbled. “That got most of it out, from what I could tell.”

“I see.”

His stomach growled and he winced, a reminder of the troops’ low supply of food.  Indeed, a few of his ribs were visible, and his coat was growing shabby and dull from malnutrition.

“...do you know how to hunt?  I’ve never caught anything bigger than a rabbit, unfortunately.”

"Hamilton!" General Washington called for his Aide. "A word."

[Alexander was tense, but kept his composure as he approached Washington.  He’d done his best to remain human and keep his true wolfish nature well hidden, but he’d slipped up today.  Charles Lee’s dogs, no doubt smelling the stench of wolf on the young aide, had barked at him incessantly, and Alexander had had enough.  He drove them away by turning into a wolf and growling, and hoped no one saw.  But now he feared Washington may have saw, and dreaded the forthcoming conversation.]

“Y-Yes, Your Excellency?”

The general stared at him from his desk, posture stiff and formal. After a moment, he dismissed the other aides, and soon, was alone with Alexander. He relaxed slightly and invited Alexander to have a seat. “I’ll not waste your time and get right to the point.” He grunted. “General Lee came to me with concerns about his dogs.” His eyes narrowed. “He claims that they have been attacked multiple times by an animal. A wolf.” He twirled a quill in his hand, eyes still fixated on Hamilton. “He says that the attacks happen when the dogs are around you.”

[Alexander’s hands clenched into fists, and a shock ran down his spine.  Washington knew.  Or did he…?]

“That’s got to be a coincidence, sir.  And besides, I don’t think wolves are very common around here.  It’s probably just a big stray dog roaming around…”

[He swallowed hard.]

“E-Either way, I had nothing to do with it.”

Washington frowned. “Don’t lie to me, Son. Wolves are much more common than they appear.” His eyes flashed gold. “Some are right around us. And dogs know it.”

[Alexander barely noticed the flash in the general’s eyes.  He was panicking, hardly able to catch his breath.  His secret was out, there was no question about it now, and he dreaded what would come next.  People killed wolves when they attacked, and the same would surely happen to him.  He had enlisted in this war fully aware that he could die…but not like this.]

“…h-how did you…who told you?“

“Alexander. Breathe.” The General’s voice was gentle. “No one told me.” He smiled, strangely amused. “Rather, I scented it. I knew there was another wolf around here.” He shook his head. “And don’t worry. Your secret is safe with me. And you’re still keeping your position and everything else.” He winked at Hamilton with a rare smile. “After all, the pack has to stay together, no?”

[Alexander was at a complete loss for words.  “Scented it?”  “Another wolf?”  “The pack?”  Did he and Washington have more in common than he thought?   This was a lot for him to take in, and it was a while before he could speak again.]

“You mean…you’re a wolf too?”

Washington simply blinked and stood up, looming over Alexander. “Why don’t we go for a walk?” He tipped his head in the direction of the woods bordering the camp. “We can talk more openly there.”

Alexander nodded and followed him outside.  Once he was sure they were alone, he took a deep breath and shook his head and shoulders.  His features quickly morphed into a long snout, small, perky black ears at the top of his head, soft brown fur that covered him from head to foot, and a shaggy black tail.

“You know, sir…if you’ve been a wolf this entire time, I think you’ve done a much better job of hiding it than me.”  He chuckled, giving the general a lopsided smile.

The general smiled then backed up and disappeared behind some trees. He reappeared as a huge, brown wolf with piecing golden eyes, torn ears, and battle scars adorning his pelt. Unlike Alexander, he’d changed into a full wolf. And he looked far more fearsome than his human form. He sat down and looked up at his aide. “I admit keeping this hidden was not easy.” He woofed with a twitch of his ears.

To Alexander’s ears, in this liminal state between man and wolf, Washington’s words were an unintelligible mess of woofs and whines.  Feeling more at ease, he, too, shifted into a full wolf, his uniform slipping off him.  In this state, his truest form, he was a small, skinny wolf with a mane-like strip of black fur that ran from the top of his head to his bushy tail.  He lay sphinx-like beside the general, his ears slightly flattened as a sign of submission and respect.

Washington twitched his ears, faintly amused. “Stand up, pup.” He rasped. “It’s alright.”

“Don’t call me ‘pup.’  Or ‘son’ for that matter.”

Alexander rose to his feet.

“So...how’d you hide it?  How come Lee’s dogs don’t bother you?”
