there’s   somewhat   of   an   ease,         in   practical   magic.      whether   it’s   guiding   his   tea   to   stir   itself   with   just   a   wiggle   of   his   fingers,      or   ridding   himself   of   bloody   garments   when   he   already   stinks   of   sweat,      the   smaller   things   do   come   in   useful   at   times.      it   isn’t   necessarily   all   about   the   big   and   flashy   displays.      (      although,      he   rather   enjoys   all   the   flashy   displays.      sometimes   he   likes   to   be   loud,      to   show   the   enemy   the   force   of   who   they’re   dealing   with.      helps   stroke   his   ego   in   all   the   right   ways.      )      her   voice   is   a   muted   sound   in   the   back   of   his   mind,      because   exhaustion   is   like   a   weighted   blanket   that   seems   to   drown   everything   else   out      :      however,      the   familiar   warmth   of   spellcraft   seems   to   soothe   his   weary   bones.      hers   feels      …      buttery.      like   the   golden   rays   of   the   sun,      like   he’s   sunning   himself   on   a   beach   somewhere   in   the   hawaiian   islands.      stephen   vaguely   realizes   that   she’s   asked   him   about   medical   textbooks,      of   all   the   damn   things   in   the   world,      and   frankly      …      he   can’t   remember.      having   a   photographic   memory   meant   that   he   had   tore   through   those   textbooks   at   lightspeed,      and   he   can   hardly   even   recall   a   single   title.      as   for   audiobooks,      he   can   say   that   he’s   never   listened   to   one.      he’s   never   been   much   of   an   auditory   learner.            ❝   i’m   sure   that   medical   textbooks   have   had   quite   a   few   changes   since   my   days   in   medical   school      …      especially   when   it   comes   to   audiobook   formatting.      however      —      there’s   a   lot   of   things   about   the   medical   field   that   you   can’t   learn   in   a   textbook.      i’d   try   a   podcast,      instead.      at   least   they’ve   had   real   experiences.   ❞
