dark academia but STEM
- pinning the most difficult equations you solved to your wall. Or just the ones you find beautiful
- lots of plants, their names written in the pots. Trying different ways to grow them.
- always having lab gloves in your bag or pockets.
- writing ideas for projects in messy notes, putting them between the pages of your notebooks and forgetting about it
- hands dirty with black ink because youâve been writing for too long too fast
- massive books under your arms, laptop full of carefully tagged papers while the printed ones are a total mess
- insane eyes and absolute euphoria when you finally understand not only the concept, but where did it came from and how it applies on your daily life
- hair always in a bun or ponytails, short finger nails and none jewelry because ~lab rules~
- searching until late at night the exact equipment the scientists used long ago, what methods they used and imagining how would it be to be in their place.
- Feeling as comfortable in the lab as in the library.
- you hate Victor Frankenstein but legit understand why.
- sore eyes from microscope or screen light, aching backs, still not wanting to leave
- looking at people and thinking about how they truly are: organs, cells, molecules, atoms, protons, eletrons, quarks, leptonsâŚ. nothing as one would think, everything, all the same, too big, too little, all pieces from a big puzzle
- dreaming about the topic you were studying last day
- having an idea about a paper while talking to your friends. Remembering that is not your field and going crazy because SOMEONE needs to research it.
- you are crazy to read some fiction but there are too many papers waiting for youÂ
- You should be used by now but sometimes still get distracted about how graphics changes according to compartments added.
- finishing a big problem and just staring at it, amazed by how it was unfolded and reorganized until you get to the final answerÂ
- âwe donât knowâŚ.yetâ
- ethics committee?? How about just test it myself, uh?(that new receipt that later comes out a absolute disaster)
- suddenly knowing how to solve a problem in the middle of a lunch
- notebooks margins filled with equations or formulas vs pages almost blank, with just one note or two
- mental breakdowns after classes thay change your perspective completely
- knowing that the truth depends on how further you can see. Weâre always getting closer. Never there.
- Looking at an art piece, wondering what kind of ink was used, how it was when it was made, how time has affected it

stem dark academia is so beautiful.
scratched notes of equations, detailed diagrams with annotations of bones & blood vessels, old notebooks containing maths problems invented & solved in a quiet afternoon.
classical music blasting from a cheap speaker. cold university dorms with posters of animal bones & carcass that were too beautiful to be passed.
debates over conservation expectations, dancing to the sound of rain after a long lecture. sleepless nights in the library, staring at a screen that no longer makes sense.
kind professors in tweed jackets & loose blouses, demonstrating how to calculate a sum, or take apart a specimen.
dirty fingernails from field work, dirty lab coats from schoolwork.
How to feel more DA from the comfort of your own home:
> Touch up any makeup or put on some of your finest red lipstick
> Light a candle & put it on a windowsil (or anywhere it won't catch something on fire)
> Read something challenging during the day (Shakespeare, James Joyce & my boi Edgar for example) & something easygoing in the evening (Agatha Christie, Huxley, Stevenson)
> Make a cup of coffee or tea either in a delicate teacup OR a real heavy duty mug (it's impossible to look even slightly suspicious if you're holding a normal sized mug ÂŻ\_(ă)_/)
> Listen to antique records on vinyl. If you don't have a player, there are some amazing Spotify playlists to use!
> If you're feeling uninspired, change up your outfit! I always feel my lowest when I'm in my pajamas all day, so I will usually put on a pair of corduroy trousers with braces & match it with a spiffingly hefty blouse
> Look at Instagram or other tumblr posts on DA and see what you find! create a mood board on Pinterest if you so wish!
> Learn to raise one eyebrow- if feeling like a pretentious scholar is your goal, this small action is a must!!
> Reach your daily goal on Duolingo- while you're doing it, it may not seem very DA, HOWEVER, when you're done you feel accomplished & smart, which is perfectly on brand. Plus, you get to learn a little more of your chosen language every day- & one of those days you'll be fluent!
> Style your hair- if you have longer (and straighter) hair, I recommend an updo such as a Gibson Tuck. Styling your hair makes you feel elegant & improves your mood heavily! Nowadays it's rare to see me without my hair up
> Reorganise/ decorate your space- even if it's just a little change, such as moving the plants around your room, it's still a breath of fresh air & allows you room to think about more permenant changes such as new paint or furniture
> Carry a book with you anywhere you go- even if it's just to the kitchen, this action will totally make you feel more book smart! A spiffing one to carry with you is "Schotts Original Miscellany" as you can read about almost anything, from identifying cloud types to commonplace Latin. Its super useful to have in your pocket- almost like a pre-written notebook just for you :)
> Practice a creative skill- like an instrument, writing or drawing. This improves your DA levels for sure
> Improve your humour to be witty & sarcastic! You can pick up tricks from basically any witty (or British) show like Sherlock or Doctor Who, & when you have sarcasm and wit up your sleeve, you aren't just unstoppable, you're also turning into that pretentious scholar you've dreamed of becoming! :,)
I hope this helps some people! Have an amazing weekend everyone & if you have any queries feel free to comment- happy Dark Academia-ing :)
A Beginnerâs Guide to Dark Academia
tips for the baby aestheteâs out there
academia
actually study! study the things you love, the things you like, the things you know nothing about â the pursuit of knowledge lasts a lifetime, and there is so much to learn
visit your professorâs office hours! it always helps to make yourself known to your teachers (iâve been given grade bumps and had great conversations with my university lecturers)
avoid and check yourself for the pretension that can often accompany academia â it hurts no one to be kind and mindful
delve into the realm of philosophy (for starters: metaphysics, epistemology, aesthetics) it will broaden your mind
stay late at your university library studying (if you can do so safely, preferably with a friend). university campuses feel magical in the evening
style
wear darker, muted colours
plaid coats, pants, or skirts
button-up shirts (Peter Pan collars are a bonus)
turtlenecks
tie your hair with a bow
accessorise! a vintage watch adds sophistication to any outfit. try wearing it with a ring or three
practice good posture â standing tall creates an air of elegance, confidence, and if paired with the right amount of nonchalance, mystery
media
films
dead poets society
cracks
the dreamers

aesthetic activities (think of this as a little checklist to get you underway as a fledgling aesthete)
make yourself tea in pretty teacups (you can find plenty in secondhand stores!)
light candles in your bedroom, and read by candlelightÂ
dry flowers for your room/desk
explore secondhand bookstores for old, pretty editions of novels you may or may not have heard of
give handwritten letters to your lovers/friends/yourself
wake up before the sun rises to watch dawn break
brood during a thunderstorm, and write extravagant, flowery poetry on parchment
join a secret society
exist in the real, with your books and art, and your turtlenecks and plaid coats, as a mystery. social media can give too much of you away
host an unceasing bacchanal for you and your pals
I hope this serves as a nice little guide for some of you wanting to get more into the aesthetic! Thereâs no real right or wrong way to go about it, these are just my suggestions from my own experience and perception of and within the community.Â

some of my dream dark academia looks
A button-down cuffed to the elbows, loose black tie threaded through the collar. A tweed blazer thrown over the forearm and a well-worn novel tucked into the elbow. Ink-smudged fingers and sleepless eyes.
A rumpled white dress shirt. The top few buttons unbuttoned to reveal a golden locket, burnished by habitual rubbing. Wistful looks out the window.
Clean and put together. A black cotton sweater, the white collar of a shirt folded out over the neck. Pegged pants and oxfords. Hair pulled into a low bun. The sleeves of a smoky gray trench coat conceal the frantically scribbled words that cover the backs of your hands and wrists. Â
Black sweater, sleeves pushed to the elbows. Messy hair twisted into a bun and held up with a pencil used as a makeshift hair stick. Mumbling Shakespeare into a steaming mug of coffee.
A white flower behind the ear. Hours spent poring over a book, lounging on a divan by the window as rain pours outside. A button-up of rosy, ghostly silk and soft gray pants. Bare feet propped up on the arm of the divan.
Hair and face damp with rain, a coat with the collar upturned against the weather. Pulling a dry book from the inside of the coat with a sigh of relief.
A cherished blazer; secondhand, ratty, and patched at the elbows.
A dark swing coat hanging off of the shoulders like a cape. A cotton turtleneck and laced ankle boots. Hair pulled back from the face by a crown of braids, a few strands loose about the face.
A creamy cotton turtleneck that peeks from underneath a black button-down, both tucked into tweed pants. A leather belt and matching dress shoes. A beaten copy of Hamlet clutched in one hand.
An ivory cable knit sweater. Silver rings adorn the fingers, frequently fiddled with by anxious hands. Hair woven into a hasty braid. A camel coat over the shoulders.Â
Lips and fingers stained with cherry juice. A black silk slip. Trading Oscar Wilde quotes in front of the fireplace.
A burgundy cardigan; underneath, white shirt, black tie. Hands hooked in the pockets of black slacks. Walking, solitary, down the dark street.Â
Black button-down, black pants, black oxfords, long black coat. The sky is overcast. Crows circle overhead. You count seven.
Worn, rumpled sweater tucked into a brown plaid skirt. Combat boots. A satchel bulging with books.Â
A faded, cream-colored button-up. Suspenders hooked on black slacks rolled up past the ankles. Bare feet in the grass, and a crown of white wax flowers on the head.Â
If you feel like youâve seen this alread, thatâs normal. This list of recommendation has been previously posted on my first account @praestantias which has been deleted for some reasons. So here I am, reposting it.Â
Hating how elitist and eurocentric the dark academia community became, I would truly appreciate that you leave some recommendation of book written by people of color, for I noticed that I am guilty of the eurocentric part, but I am really want to educate myself and read more non-white books.Â
Thank you for your suggestions!
Types of Dark Academia characters, according to their outfits
The narcissist with lots of secrets: Black turtleneck, with a gold coin necklace over top. A tartan mini skirt, or checked trousers. Trench coat. Red lips and dark eyes. Books in languages no-one else understands. Thinks theyâre better than you, and probably are.
The messy researcher: Cosy jumpers with shirt collars poking out. Slouchy tartan trousers. Dark socks and oxfords. Old-school messenger bag bursting with various notes and journals. Has started about 30 projects or books in the past week, and hasnât finished any of them.
The garden party prep: Sweater vests. Pale khaki trousers/chinos, or a traditional white midi dress. Socks pulled up. Boat shoes. Expensive watch. Might play some cricket or croquet later.
The student dreamer: Knit cardigans over knee-length skirts or pinafores. Mary-Janes or ballet flats. Bouncy hair and wide eyes. Sometimes a beret. Likes autumn, and writing long letters.
The aspiring professor: Tweed. Wears suits to class. Coats and blazers waistcoats and undershirts and trousers/skirts, all in tweed or tartan, browns and greys. Kind of intense. Secretly on the verge of a nervous breakdown, but at least they have great notes.
The edgy poet:Â Oversized, unbuttoned plaid shirts or blazers over turtlenecks. Cigarette trousers. Combat boots. Black coffee. Actually very sentimental, but also might have accidentally killed someone with their classmates.
part 2 coming soon
You know what. Iâm starting a new aesthetic, population me.
Romantic Science, AKA Dark Academia for STEM people.
Thrifting a lab coat and embroidering it with your initials and a little insignia, whose significance is known to you and your lab partner only
Watching The Theory of Everything and The Imitation Game and Hidden Figures and basically every movie about historical scientists and mathematicians you can find
Decorating your desk with old slide rules and vintage lab equipment. Your prize possession is a set of vintage lenses you found at a thrift store
Wanting an articulated human skeleton far, far too much
Getting a set of (brand new, NOT thrifted, be safe ppl) beakers to drink from, and putting them directly onto your stovetop to boil water for tea or coffee, because borosilicate glass can survive anything.
Secretly relating far too much to Henry Jekyll and Victor Frankenstein, because you too want to do a gay little science experiment that challenges god.
Thunderstorms and late nights in the lab, the light of the Bunsen burner glistening off of your flasks and scribbled chalkboard equations
Papering your walls with vintage scientific diagrams; even if you know that our understanding of the world has evolved since they were made, looking back at scientific history is amazing
Writing code late at night and feeling, in some metaphysical way, as though Ada Lovelace herself is with you in spirit
Being far, FAR too obsessed with the concept of emergent ai sentience and how it has the potential to be Frankenstein irl
Looking through a telescope on clear nights, whispering the names of the constellations and stars, painting a star chart on your ceiling in a burst of creative inspiration
Collecting and mounting samples from everywhere you can think of to pore over in an antique microscope
Bringing a field journal wherever you go, learning how to draw and label botanical samples, preserving plants and flowers for study later
Dreaming of what undiscovered mysteries lie in the deepest depths of the sea, feeling the thrill of discovery whenever you learn about a new species and one day hoping to discover one yourself
Just. Romanticise STEM.

â¨Chaotic STEM Academiaâ¨
~ Always needing to write down interesting bits of research papers or uni lesson pages but never having the patience to maintain a whole new notebook for it; consequently, youâve got delightful facts from like four unrelated subjects scribbled in the margins of notebooks and textbooks and on post-it notes and napkins and The Cat (flipping through your notebooks and textbooks is always a wild ride)
~ Notes for a single subject are either spread out over five different notebooks and several loose sheets (Not In Binders, I repeat, Not In Binders) or youâve got the whole yearâs coursework down in one very thicc notebook, there is no in between (organisation is not your strong suit bestie, itâs okay)
~ Hyperfixating on questions and topics (you have no concept of Leave It And Move On) the ensuing chaos of research and rabbit holes and stack exchange questions and reddit threads from 10 years ago mean that you usually know way more than you need to about certain things (but knowledge is never wasted, you tell yourself, after closing your laptop at 3 am on a Tuesday morning)
~ Ink spots in places ink spots are not usually found (elbows, knees, feet) after a study session (you have no memory of how they got there and now itâs gonna take forever to scrub them out, but that is the price you pay for getting things done)
~ Forgetting to bring things to class (notebooks, stationery, devices, the works) but luckily your backpack houses a second dimension of pure chaos (the second zip) from whence you can summon a very worn-looking pencil from three years ago in a pinch (once the second dimension stationery runs out, you really need to get your shit together and pack for lessons)
~ Taking pride in your rough work- scribbled equations and calculations and sketched diagrams covering pages delight you; thereâs something solid and real about them, proof that youâve done things and learned things. You flip through your rough notebook after youâve used up the last bit of space in it, and take heart in the fact that youâre different from the person at the beginning of the bookÂ
~ The education system fills you with despair sometimes, in all of its rigidity, in all of its focus on only a few exams. You want to learn for the sake of learning, you want to pursue every single one of your myriad interests, but eventually realise itâs not practical. Some day, you tell yourself.
Any suggestions/inspiration for a STEM-focused, dark academia aesthetic? I'm something of a reformed humanities student finishing an engineering degree this time around.
I think STEM in Dark Academia is an underappreciated aesthetic. The humanities seek to understand what it is to be human, and this is a complex venture indeed. But studying STEM means you seek to understand the world around you. And my God, are there mysteries to be uncovered. Letâs go down the list together, shall we?
SCIENCE.
Latin words fall from your lips as easily as a prayer, and isnât there piety in this? Devotion, worship? There must be, for you to be able to dig your hands into the breathing body of the world around you and have it speak back. Messily scrawled chemical equations are practically tattooed onto your arms and hands, and sometimes you wake with the molecular structure of a human red blood cell drawn carefully on your heart with no memory of putting it there, but it moves with the pulse of your heart. Bubbling beakers and plumes of emerald, cobalt, violet flame. Faded lab coats. Hair cut short or pulled back neatly, not a single tendril hanging down. Dirt under fingernails, sleeves rolled up and out of the way. You know poisons, toxins, you know the pump of blood through arteries, you know how close we are to death, and you know how it feels to hold the hand of human long dead, still cold from the cooler. Death hates you, because you are helping humanity evade it.
TECHNOLOGY.
Lines and lines of code stare back at you from the over-bright screen of your monitor. You know, you know that we could be more, that the future is a few keystrokes away if only you can organize your tumbling thoughts and the wall of symbols in front of you. You like the way robots move; tiny, carefully planned, yet oh so jerky motions that canât help but remind you of when a baby deer takes its first quivering steps. You think humans were like this once, in the beginning. You think the movement in a motor resembles the inner workings of a human heart. You imagine the veins that pump blood through your body as wires on a circuit board delivering electricity from one place to another. Leather shoes laced as tightly as possible, tiny blueprints doodled on the soles. Bronze bells hanging from a bedroom window, a crumbled silk shirt. How far can you push at the boundaries of what is possible before something breaks? Will it be you or reality that gives first?
ENGINEERING.
What is it about the smoothing of clay into shapes that makes humanity stop and say, âThis must be what it feels like to be Godâ? How much more can you feel it, with the power in your fingertips and in the corners of your mind to make things humans could never do? To push civilization past its breaking point and remake it anew, better, stronger, more than God ever did? What is the difference between man and machine, and should you even care in the first place? You are like God alright, you are participating in something divine, something holy. You double check every equation and think about what it means to be alive. You decide that, in the ever moving cogs of this great clock, you will be the first piece that moves, the one that pushes the others to succeed. Pencils stabbed into messy buns, lipstick stains on pale coffee cup rims. Your eyes are sharp and focused, but your thoughts are ever moving and desperate with desire to create, to bound forward into the future you are oh so carefully envisioning, every piece laid out and pinned down within an inch of its life. Children are starving, the world is burning, and you can do something, you can fix this, because if you don't, who else can? Who else will?
MATHEMATICS.
What is math? A meaningless formal game. Above the door at Platoâs Academy were inscribed the words, âLet no one enter here who is ignorant of geometry.â How can it be that both are true? A secret language exists that no one is born into, but is available to all willing to learn. Astronomy, the constant ever cycling of the universe around us, our own home a puzzle piece in a cosmic dance. Meandering lines of equations that are beautiful, beautiful, because you know what they mean and they speak to you, they sing. You write them with calligraphy pens and hang them above your desk, they are as much an expression of the human condition as a Picasso; show our creativity more than a Monet. Hands dirty from dragging them over cramped pages of numbers and graphite dust, equations traced into the foggy glass of your favorite coffee shop, messy hair and bitten down nails, math pun t-shirts under tweed blazers, the theory of relativity scrawled sloppily on your knee, the world around you the sum of shapes and numbers and you can see it, you can hear it.
STEM in Dark Academia is nonstop in its restlessness. There is always more to be discovered, further to push, limits that can and will be broken. There is a darkness to that beauty, a madness that permeates the cracks of every field. A historian could have told you not to make the atom bomb. A scientist canât help themself from seeing how much destruction is possible.
Tips to boost your academic standing before break!
Alright folks, exam season is pretty much in full swing and even if you donât have exams, youâre probably coming up to a pretty big break and to the end of the first semester. Even though I hate the way that good grades are idolized within the education system, they are. The fact of the matter is good grades are going to make it a lot easier to go places, so here are some last minute tips to boost that score before winter break.
Go to office hours!! I realize the idea of being in a room alone with your professor or speaking one on one with your professor seems really daunting, but itâs literally their job. If youâre struggling in a class or even with just a single concept, youâll probably find a lot of help in meeting with your professor alone, that way, you can discover the best way for you to understand something together. Moreover, it shows great work ethic and care for your classes to show up when you donât have to and seek out help.
Do your work! I know this may seem like an obvious one, but readings and homework are th simple stepping stones to a better grade. I know youâre probably stressed out and busy, but youâre hopefully only one or two weeks away from break. So think of this as the time where you can really put in the work and then get a reward by relaxing all break.
Actually study. Another obvious one, but I mean more than just the basic âyou should study.â Study effectively. Donât work super late into the night, take breaks (Iâm a big fan of the pomodoro technique, but whatever works for you), challenge yourself. The best advice anyone ever gave me would have to be: âif you canât get it wrong, youâre not studying.â (Thanks Jimmy!) This means, do practice problems or flash cards instead of just rereading, if you arenât giving yourself the opportunity to give a wrong answer, how are you ever going to know that youâll give the right one when the time comes?
Make a to-do list. For a long time, people would espouse to me about the glory of to-do lists and I just didnât get it. But the first time I checked something off of my to-do list, I got a rush of dopamine even my SSRI canât replace (jk, btw, take your meds). Having a visual representation of what I need to do has really helped me be more productive over the years and get things done. It can also show you how to take things one step at a time, breaking up the work into manageable items that you can do in bits. A lot of people use digital to-do lists which have their advantages, but personally, nothing will ever be more effective than a good, old fashioned piece of notebook paper.
Sleep! Or, more generally, take care of yourself! Nothing will ever improve if you canât function properly. Eat meals, drink water, get enough sleep. If you need to, thereâs no shame in setting reminders for yourself on a phone, laptop, sticky note, whatever. Donât ever let yourself get so stressed out that you canât function/arenât healthy. And if youâre at that point, stop reading this post and take a walk! Go outside, take a bath, play an instrument, dedicate at least an hour to thinking about something other than school. I promise you will thank yourself later.
Pretty simple tips, but I hope this helps anyone who needs it. The modern education is shit, but sometimes you have to deal with shit. You got this friends!
dark academia / winter capsule wardrobe
tops
⢠a black turtleneck. preferably cotton or cashmere.
⢠a white collared shirt. silk, cotton or linen.
⢠a dressier top. something to wear with jeans when having poetry nights with your friends; i would still advise to go for black, but the style can be more extravagant â puff sleeves, maybe?
⢠a basic long-sleeved t-shirt. choose a dark, muted colour or go for black.
⢠an oversized knit. white, grey or black; wool is best at keeping you warm.
⢠basic knit. possibly black; doesnât have to be boring in style â could be a wrap cardigan, a turtle or mock-neck, balloon-sleevedâŚ
bottoms
⢠a pair of black straight-leg jeans. stick to 100% cotton.
⢠a pair of black or dark grey trousers. wool or cotton is good.
⢠a black skirt. mini or midi; wool is, again, great for winter, but anything will do.
dresses
⢠a long-sleeved little black dress. pick a style you like, be it frilly or clean cut.
⢠a dark knit dress. just try to stay away from acrylic & polyester, they wonât keep you warm.
underwear
⢠a few pairs of bras. go for neutral colours & comfort.
⢠enough underpants. black or baby pink lace is always nice; cotton is good.
⢠different types of socks. black & white, thick & thin; make sure your ankles are covered.
⢠black tights. they keep your legs warm when you wear a skirt or a dress.
jewellery
choose gold or silver, whichever suits you best, & stick to it.
⢠two dainty necklaces. you can wear them on their own of stacked together.
⢠a few rings. one bigger & more interesting, the rest more minimal to complement the more intriguing piece.
⢠a pair of everyday earrings & a more elegant pair. if you wear earrings; make sure both pairs fit your other jewellery.
accessories
⢠an over-the-shoulder leather bag. black or brown; it should fit your school papers & at least a few extra books.
⢠a small bag for special occasions. whatever style you like; it should go together with your little black dress & fit at least a lipstick & everything you might need at a party â a tiny bottle of vodka & a small notebook?
⢠a black or checkered (but dark in colour) umbrella. for those beautifully gloomy, rainy days.
⢠a leather belt. black or brown, depending on the colour of your bag & shoes.
⢠a scrunchie. black velvet or white satin.
shoes
⢠a pair of black or brown boots. either a chelsea boot or a dr. martens type shoe; these should be the same colour as your everyday bag.
⢠a menswear-inspired shoe. should match your bag; oxfords, brogues, derbysâŚ
⢠occasion footwear. type depends on your style; could be heeled ankle boots, pumps, ankle-strap heels, loafers, ballerinas or even the same derby shoes from the previous point.
outerwear
⢠a long woollen coat. preferably black; could also be a checkered dark grey.
⢠a tweed jacket or checkered blazer. in grey or brown tones; could be worn under the oversized coat for added warmth.
⢠a pair of mittens. in a dark colour; maybe a friend or a lover knitted them for you?
⢠a big long scarf. matches the mittens; favour natural materials for warmth.
Summer Dark Academia Fashion
The forecast says itâs going to be almost 80 degrees this weekend. It is time to leave your cave. You go to your closet and open it to find racks of wool sweaters you have collected over the past eight months. There is a single t-shirt balled up in the corner. You are me.Â
Tops
Turtlenecks are no longer an option.
Suit vests. You donât need the oppressive heat of a button down to wear suit vests. If your vests are a little more low-necked then youâd like, wear a tank top or something with short sleeves underneath. Iâm wearing a suit vest in this post, if you want to see styling ideas.Â
Silk button downs. Obviously short sleeves are preferred, but long sleeves are still possible in the summer. With a material like silk especially, because it feels cool and also helps to keep your skin safe. You just need loose sleeves. That is the theme with this post: loose. If you want to continue dressing long sleeves or long pants in the summer, tight clothing is not an option. You need to be able to get airflow to your skin.Â
Cotton. Cotton is a great material for heat; tops or bottoms. If you have a long sleeve button down, you can roll up the sleeves and tuck it into something high waisted. Add suspenders (optional, but highly recommended), and thatâs summer dark academia right there you mad lad. Short sleeves or no sleeves work just as well.
T-shirt or tank top. Yes, even a basic t-shirt can be âdark academiaâ if styled right. Granted, youâre likely going to end up looking more like a âMilo Thatch from Atlantisâ kind of academia, thatâs hardly a bad thing. (Look up Cole Sprouse dressed as him and thank me later) A simple white top in black bottoms is reminiscent of a suit, while tan bottoms looks more âLara Croft on an archaeology digâ, which is fun.Â
Camisoles. If you want as little fabric on you as possible, silk camis are the way to go. Plus, you can find tons for super cheap in the pajamas/underwear section of most thrift stores. Is it weird to wear shirts people probably had sex in? Kind of. But if youâre cheap like me, you move past that quickly. Tuck into a pair of high waisted, loose pants that are black or tan, and you remain dark academia and without heatstroke (drink water).Â
Bottoms
Unfortunately, they must be worn.
Shorts. Best material is linen, and you can find a lot of options and styles on Etsy and more high-end online stores. However, theyâre also more expensive, so here are some other keywords for shorts: pleated, high waisted, paper bag. Look at ASOS, Express, or SHEIN for cheaper options. Jean shorts can also work, but they should be dark and definitely not cutoffs. A belt can also help to make the outfit seem more together. And, as always: high waisted, unless you want a more masculine fit, in which case avoid high waists.
Trousers. Itâs trouser time baby. Suit pants are out. Skinny jeans are (unfortunately) out. We want loose, flowy material. Pleats are excellent. Actually, pants like these are pretty easy to find these days, and not just on the internet. Straight leg trousers look more streamlined and put together, whereas wide-leg are a bit more roguish. Tuck in a white top of your preference, add some suspenders, and drink water. Youâre set.
Skirts/Dresses. Oh to be a wandering poet, running through fields and wildflowers in a flowing linen dress as the sun casts a crown above your head, and the wind gives you countless kisses on cheeks and hair. Wait! That can be you! Stop fantasizing and start doing- get a pale dress, linen or cotton is best. Pale colors are preferred for summer. Find a field. Frolic.
Shoes
Please put away your oxfords.
Mary Jane sandals. Mary Janes are pretty much the oxfords of summer shoes. Especially if you can get them in leather with low heels, it looks very classy.
Gladiator sandals. When in Rome. Or, when youâre into an aesthetic that really likes latin. Either way, these shoes are pretty much string and a sole, so theyâre about as cool as you can get, temperature wise.Â
Ballet sandals. I mentioned these in my unique dark academia fashion post, but Iâll do it again for summer. Theyâre similar to gladiator sandals in style, but I think they look fancier. Plus, you can tie them in little bows, which is adorable.
AccessoriesÂ
You know what Iâm going to say. Say it. Out loud.Â
SUSPENDERS. Ten bucks on amazon, and I promise theyâre the best investment into your wardrobe you could make. Theyâre magic- take your boring shorts and shirt, add suspenders, and POOF. Itâs dark academia. So classy.Â
Sun hat. Cottage core and dark academia have pretty much moved from distant cousins to siblings at this point, might as well embrace it. Get something with a black bow out in. Have a picnic and read Keats.
Watch. I feel like a nice classy watch would be a great accessory that doesnât involve adding fabric to your body. I mean, I donât have one, but I feel like it would.Â
Hair. If you have long hair, do yourself a favor, buy a french comb, and learn how to do a french twist. It takes a few tries to get right, but there are youtube videos and it is one of the easiest hairstyles that looks like it takes so much effort. I have pretty much switched ponytails out completely for french twists, and especially for the summer itâs great to get all your hair up and off your neck. If you have short hair, feel free to gloat.Â
Feel free to add your own in the tags, and stay hydrated!Â
