Luckily, with help I was able to edit my green screen animation to get rid of the shadows that were very prominent on the left side of the screen! Although it’s an improvement I still think that it’s slightly off and doesn’t look as polished as I’d like it to.

Week 8 summary
Mystery Box
I’v now filmed my complete mystery box sequence. I think overall the movement is quite good but not as smooth as I would have liked, though it’s definitely the smoothest stop motion animation I’ve produced so I think I’m getting better at it. Whilst filming I got the idea of the box rolling up to the character and then rolling away, so I tried doing that to see what it looked like and I like how it turned out. However though the animation on it’s own looks okay unfortunately due to me not setting up the lighting properly and getting rid of creases in the background the green screen didn’t work very well. This is really unfortunate since I liked the field background I made for it, and theres a lot of shadow that shouldn’t be there. This at least will be a lesson to me to always check these kind of things before filming.

This Tuesday we presented our presentations on the making of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox and some of the people that worked on it. I think it went quite well, unfortunately the storyboard artist I contacted never got back to me. In hindsight I should have had a plan b and contacted an extra person. Though most of us in the group found it difficult contacting people and having replies, I guess from this I’ve seen just how important networking and being in the know is. When you know people in the industry it’s so much easier to contact the people you need. I think we presented well, though I do feel like I stumbled a bit. I was unexpectedly very nervous when it was my time to speak and ended up stuttering a lot and missing out on things I was intending on saying unfortunately. Though I think the rest of my group did really well and together I think we had quite a lot of good information and knowledge of the creation of Fantastic Mr Fox.
Showreel
This week I edited and finished my year one showreel. Looking back over the year there is definitely improvement that I can see thankfully and although there is some work that I’m really not pleased with, there’s a lot that I’m proud of which is really great to see. I think my cgi work isn’t great, although I think alot of that is due to the fact that it’s the animation that i’m least interested in with 2d digital and stop motion being my personal favourites to do. Though a good showreel shows that you have the ability to do a lot of different things so I’ve tried to keep it varied with: stop motion, cg, traditional, 2d digital, and also some character design sheets. Though there’s a lot I need to improve on I’m pleased with my showreel and I think it’s a good representation of my year of work.
This is the background I’ve made for my stop motion mystery box project. I’m quite pleased with this, usually I think I’m not very good with backgrounds and tend to avoid them in casual drawings since I either don’t know what to put in the background or am not sure how to make a background that doesn’t distract from the main point of interest. But with this I think I managed a successful background.
Now that my model is finished I can start filming the mystery box sequence. I experimented a bit and set up how I’m going to film the final sequence, so I positioned the box and did a bit of a walk cycle with my puppet. I would have liked to film more but didn’t have enough time in the workspace. Though it was a good opportunity to see how the puppet moves. The movement is a little bit clunky but I think that’s more down to me still not being 100% great at animating stop motion, but I think I’m getting there, I can see improvement from the first stop motion walk cycle I did this year. I think the main thing I’m struggling with is the arms, because they’re so long I’m sort of at a loss of what to do with them! I just need to make sure they swing in a realistic way.
Week 7 Summary
Mystery Box
I’ve finished making my puppet! I’m very pleased with how it’s turned out I think it looks very much like my original design and has this sweet but slightly odd look to him which I wanted. In terms of colours I’m very pleased, the warm colours on his face, hair, and parts of the clothing are similar to mud and straw which links the design to the fact that he’s a scarecrow and almost a part of nature since scarecrows remain outside all the time in fields. My worry of the hair being fragile was correct, already strands of hair have fallen off though luckily it’s not noticeable and I have managed to glue some back on. I’m especially worried about the tip of the nose since it’s so pointed I’ll have to be careful.

This week we organised our presentation, what we’d be saying and made the slideshow. Unfortunately the lead storyboard artist, Christian De Vita, still hasn’t got back to me, though this shouldn’t be too much of a problem since I’ve found a lot of information about him and found some interviews with him online.
Animation to sound
This week we created our own series of mouths to make a speaking animation. I think the mouths I made worked out quite well though some of them didn’t function as well as I wanted them too and found it difficult paring some sounds with the appropriate mouths. I probably should have made more mouths and wider variations. I also made some eyes and eyebrows to go with the changes in the mouth.
Showreel
This week we were introduced to another project. We will be making showreels that showcase our work for this year! I’ve been thinking about what I want to include and I definitely want to show my character designs as well as a lot of my 2d animations made in tv paint since those are what I’m most pleased with.

Week 6 Summary
Mystery Box
Over the holidays I made most of the body and am nearly finished with the puppet. I think it’s coming along very well and am surprised with my sewing skills! There are parts on the clothes of the figure that look a bit messy but I think that actually works with the character since he’s a scarecrow it makes sense that he’s a bit scruffy looking since he’s outside all the time and stuffed with straw.

I’ve continued to research into the production of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr Fox and am looking into the lead storyboard artist Christian De Vita. I’ve sent a message to him and am waiting a reply so I’ve prepared some questions to ask which I think will be interesting to hear about:
What’s your process for starting to storyboard a scene?
Was there a particular scene in the film that you found challenging to storyboard and put across on paper?
When creating storyboards for animation do you have to keep in mind the format? With Fantastic Mr Fox being stop motion did you adjust your storyboard sketches or generally do you find that storyboards can stay universally the same no matter the method of animation?
What was it like working with Wes Anderson and working with the team to create the film? Were there any particularly enjoyable or stressful moments during production?!
Animation to sound
This week we continued to experiment with syncing dialogue with 2d animations of a mouth. I think I’m getting to grips with the software we’re using thankfully.
Over easter I finished making most of the body. There are a few details I still need to add as well as making the hands and feet, but so far so good!
I’ve also been looking at movement and trying to figure out how to make the stop motion look fluid enough that the actions are believable since animations being too rigid is a problem I keep having. I’ve found a few good references, one being this video of a man walking. It’s especially useful that its in slow motion so it’s easier to see all the subtle movements in the walk.
This video doesn’t have much to do with the storyboards, but never the less I found it interesting. On the subject of world-building, storyboards for the film contributed to the beginning of creation.
I’ve contacted the lead storyboard artist for the film, Christian De Vita in hopes to get some insight into the creation of the film so hopefully he’ll reply and be able to answer some questions.
This is currently what I’m planning on saying in the presentation:
Storyboard artists work closely with the director and their role is to visualise what a scene will look like in the finished product, they have to consider the placement of characters, the setting, mood, as well as camera angles. It is essential for a storyboard artist to be able to quickly sketch out the directors visions for a scene in order for production to run quicker; directors may adapt or even get rid of entire scenes if they think by looking at the storyboard it won’t work, therefore storyboards are usually reworked many times before finalising with what the scene will look like. Storyboards are an essential part of an animation production, since they allow the director to see if something isn't working before creating it.
Since Fantastic Mr Fox was such a large scale production not just one storyboard artist worked on the film, however the lead artist was Christian De Vita. DeVita is currently working at French animation studio TeamTo where he directed feature film Yellowbird and is presently series director of a children’s animation tv show called PJ Masks. One of the first feature length films Christian De Vita worked on was Space Jam in 1996, he has since gone on to work on Frankenweenie and has been involved in many of Wes Anderson’s productions; being a storyboard artist for The Grand Budapest hotel, and collaborating with the director to make an animated short for promotion of Anderson’s Moonrise Kingdom. Wes Anderson and DeVita worked together quite a lot for Fantastic Mr Fox since he wanted to be as hands on with the project as he could. Anderson had a clear idea for the film and wanted his signature quirky filmmaking style to show. Christian De Vita commented on working with Wes Anderson, saying; "I was quite amazed at the type of story that Wes was able to create out of such a thin book. This was my first stop-motion film. I come from a traditional 2D background and worked on CG projects. I had storyboarded for stop-motion TV series, but that just entailed blocking positions. The amount of panels for each shot and poses was way more extensive on this.”

Week 5 Summary
Mystery Box
This week I continued working on my puppet. I made the head, feet, and started to make the clothes. I like how the head has turned out but I’m slightly worried that the hair and the nose may be too fragile. The hair and nose is thin at the ends so there’s the possibility that it may snap off so I’m going to try and be very careful with it. With the face I wasn’t sure how to do the eyes, in my maquette I used extra clay to mould an eye shape but when I tried it with this I didn’t like how it looked and thought they looked to bug eyed so i’ve decided to paint on the eyes. I made the feet smaller then I was originally going to do but I think it will still be stable.

We’ve now been put into new groups for another presentation. In my group we decided on the film we’d focus on and what job role we’d each look into. We are going to study Fantastic Mr Fox and I will research the role of storyboard artist. I love Fantastic Mr Fox, when I was younger the Roald Dahl classic was one of my favourite stories and when I saw the film I was so blown away at how Wes Anderson had created the world so well, I personally am very fond of the film and adore the style and whole atmosphere it shows. It will be interesting to learn about how the film was created.
Animation to sound
This week for the animation to sound project we were introduced to lip syncing. We used a ready made model and used different shaped mouths to give the impression that the character was speaking. I really enjoyed doing this and found it almost therapeutic paring the sound with the visuals. I think I did quite well, although there is some instances where the animation looks slightly off the movement seems believable. Next time I’ll try and experiment more with the other facial features like maybe making the eyes blink.
Week 4 Summary
Mystery Box
We were given a camera induction this week in preparation for filming our stop motion animations, we also continued work with making our models. After we finished making the armatures last week we could start building up the body using foam. Because my character is thin I didn’t use much foam but after cutting it into shape the character’s design is starting to show through which is nice to see. I really like how it looks with the short body and long limbs and how the foam gives it a softer appearance.

This week we gave our presentations. I think ours went well, and although two members of our group weren’t able to come we did well.
Week 3 Summary
Mystery Box
On Monday we started the process of puppet creation, we used wire and clay to build an armature for our character- basically a skeleton to build upon. It’s interesting seeing the model come together, it looks to bare at the moment so it will be interesting to see as I build up the model how it looks. In my maquette I didn’t manage to get the proportions how I wanted, but my armature has exaggerated long arms and legs which is exactly what I wanted. I’m going to try and make the feet quite long, not just because I think it will work stylistically but also to give the model stability. This week we also had a wood workshop where we were shown where we will be able to use the workshop to create things using metal, wood and other materials. Although for this project I don’t think I’ll spend time using it, seeing the workshop was great and makes me look forward to future projects where I’ll get a chance to build sets and props for stop motion animation.

Before our main group presentation/research project we will do a small presentation about a company and animation. In my group we will be looking at samurai Jack and a storyboard artist that works on it, Bryan D. Andrews. I hadn’t watched an entire episode of Samurai until now and I really love the animation style, the art really looks beautiful with the block colours and lack on lines almost like a painting.
Animation to sound
This week we were introduced to the animation to sound project, we used Adobe After effects and Audition to create a simple animation that would go with a piece of music. I found the software we were using very confusing! I’ve used after effects before and created a small animation of a world spinning for a school project but that took a lot of time to make and I ended up following a step by step guide. I think I eventually got the hang of it though, enough to make a decent looking, if simple, animation that goes well in time with the music.
