Saving Africa’s Elephants One Orphan at a Time

“There is little more rewarding than being able to watch as these broken babies heal and join wild herds to live a wild life again,” says Angela Sheldrick, CEO of the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust (@dswt), the world’s most successful orphan-elephant rescue and rehabilitation program, named after her late father, which has raised close to 200 orphaned elephants in Kenya. “An estimated 25,000 to 30,000 elephants are killed for their tusks each year, and at that rate, more elephants are being killed by poachers than being born,” she says. But it’s not too late for these animals. “We urge people to use their social channels to share stories about elephants in an effort to remind people that our natural world is the most beautiful world, and that if we lose it, we will lose a part of ourselves,” says Angela. “I, for one, cannot contemplate a planet void of the magnificent elephant. Surely collectively we can stop this madness.” #WorldElephantDay
