She didn’t want to leave that hug, she couldn’t. Chapin wanted as much time with him before Anna and her dad would make he come home. Even if she weren’t legally obligated, she knew she wouldn’t have a choice.

"I mean, maybe I did say something pretty bad but it was the truth and I feel terrible for what I said and I hate that it was the truth." She still didn’t pull away. "I joined this site—like to meet guys and mom got really upset and I called her out for doing what she did with you when only knowing you for a day and, like, that you didn’t really love her and had evil intentions and I said just because she was stupid for doing all that doesn’t mean I would. And I hate it because I not only insulted mom but you and I just wish you loved each other and we were a family."

Hans frowned as he listened to her talking and then huffed. He kinda forgot that everyone else didn't know he wasn't an evil asshole. He just rubbed her back gently. "I know, I'm sorry," He sighed. They could have been a family. But instead she had a family with that stupid oaf of a man and he couldn't help but be bitter. He just rubbed her back though, "It's gonna be okay, Chae."

  "I know about your children, the situation," She nodded as she sat down and opened the planner on her desk, "And I know about the stocks and what Mr. Westergaard does to provide for this children. Trust me, I do know, I don’t leave until he does."

She then looked up at her and arched an eyebrow. “I’m sorry sweetheart but I don’t remember concerning myself with whether you like me or not. At this point, Hans is practically my son. He needs someone to look out for him. Everyone does.”

"The situation is that what happened when we were young was a mistake. Of course he pays child support." Her arms crossed—she was about to lose her temper. "Look, lady you know nothing about what happened in the past. I don’t know what he told you but you don’t know anything!"

Shirley was about to reply when Hans came back. He looked frazzled as ever as he sighed, "Shirley, be a doll and pull all of the Bruce's files." Then he noticed Anna and frowned, "What's going on here?"

"But I don’t have to listen to him," Chapin said walked down the entrance hall and turning around to look at Hans. "And I can stay here and mom can’t make me go back. I mean, you’re not kidnapping me. You have custody and, and I’m eighteen so I can’t be labeled a run away."

Chae shrugged, crossing her arms. “It’s not fair! I want to live with you—all the time. Like, I know how most of my siblings are like really all over the place but,” she began to cry again. “It’s not fair that Opal is so close with him. With her dad. It’s not the same when I’m around him, there isn’t that connection. But he’s not you and, and I never had any of that with you.” Now Chapin didn’t even want to look at Hans. “I never had that dad-daughter or father-daughter bond any of the others had.”

Hans sighed as he headed into the living room, knowing she'd follow him. He was about to sit down when she started speaking again. He looked at her, frowning a little as he felt the guilt churning in his stomach. It wasn't his fault though, he couldn't help when happened. That didn't mean he didn't feel guilty though. He walked over to her, pulling her into a hug. "I'm so sorry," He murmured quietly.

Anna was trying hard to keep her temper away but this woman was stirring it. “And what do you know?” she said this flatly, following the woman out. “About—” she paused, she needed to not make things worse. Not put the blame on Hans. “How we were like any young kids and made a mistake? How Hans took responsibility and stepped up? Oh, or how I still stay in contact with him—how he worked so hard to save up stocks for their future?” She was still trying to keep herself relaxed.

But she was now standing right beside the woman again, “or how he’s putting his social and dating life on the back burner to make sure our daughter is okay—to check in with her health?” Anna had been holding it it. The news she received from one of Chapin’s text results had come in earlier in the morning. It wasn’t good and she had yet to bring it up with Hans.

Clearing her throat Anna crossed her arms. “Listen lady, you are rude and I don’t like you.”

"I know about your children, the situation," She nodded as she sat down and opened the planner on her desk, "And I know about the stocks and what Mr. Westergaard does to provide for this children. Trust me, I do know, I don't leave until he does."

Chapin didn't want to let go and as she sobbed more, her tears and running nose left little wet patches on his shirt. But when she really thought about it maybe chapin felt bad for what she said.

Pulling away she sniffed with a nod and shrug. "No or well, yeah kind of maybe. But it isn't his job!"

Hans sighed as he rubbed her back slowly. He wasn't good with emotional people. He'd always been taught that emotions shouldn't be shared. It was just how his family operated. He kept his arms around Chapin though.

Hans raised an eyebrow when she said that and let go, moving to shut the door. "As much as I hate to say this," He sighed, "Kristoff as halfway raised you. Your mother has deemed him your dad, so yes, he can, Chap."

"Me?" Anna almost snapped but tried to bring her voice to a calm.  "And what exactly has he said about me?" She stood up and managed to get to the door before her. She stood in front of it.

"I don’t see how any of this is your business anyway."

"You're Anna, yes?" She raised an eyebrow at her, "I just...know what happened." She then rolled her eyes, "Yes. You've said that before. But...really, I don't care what you think. I don't work for you." With that, she went around Anna, heading back to her desk.

"1930?" she shrugged, "Well I was a baby, I don’t remember it. I guess it was a nice place." she said nonchalantly. "It was only bad in 1939 when the war started and they tried to make everyone evacuate."

Hans hummed and that. "I suppose that would have been shitty," He stated as he pushed himself up off the couch. "Well," He stated as he walked over, grabbing his brief case, "I suppose you want to be on your way."

“Oh? And you are telling me he is a bachelor because? What?” Anna crossed her arms. She had no idea why she was letting herself give this stranger an attitude—it was unlike Anna. “Enlighten me, though. What ever does he tell you about.m

Without knowing quite why, maybe to push buttons, Anna moved her hand slightly so the diamond of her engament ring as well as the silver from her wedding ring let off a small shine from the sunlight coming through the window.

The woman was about to answer when she noticed the rings and all of it slid together. She looked enough like Hans' daughter. And it would only make sense for her to be the one talking about their stocks. "You," She deadpaned, grabbing her papers and heading out of the room.

Hallie took the items, placing the cigarette between her lips and lighting up with practiced ease. She took a long drag, smiling as she managed to blow a perfect smoke ring. “I see. I’m from London, 1930.” she explained simply. Obviously, magic was no stranger to Hans so he’d be able accept it.

Hans watched her with slight amusement before he raised an eyebrow. "Oh? Was that a good year?" He looked over at her, "I like modern day London but of course I've never seen London in 1930."

"I walked," she said without a beat. Her eyes were red from crying, her nose was dripping a bit as well. 

Chapin did not hesitate to step through the threshold and wrap her arms around her father’s waist for a hug. She refused to let go. “He’s not my father he can’t do this!”

"You...walked?" Hans arched an eyebrow but then Chapin stepped in and hugged him. He was slightly confused but he wrapped his arms around his daughter. They didn't hug much. Hans just wasn't a touchy feely person. "Well...did he have a reason?" He asked gently, reaching over to shut the door, one arm still around her.

"What exactly are you trying to point out?" Anna leaned forward a bit, putting her phone down on the desk. "And yes. You work for Hans and have absolutely no right to pry into her personal life."

Shirley frowned as she looked at her, "I'm...pointing out that Hans is a bachelor that gets himself into a lot of trouble." She frowned at her again, "Hans talks to me about a lot of things. I take care of him. I have a right if he gives it to me."

Chapin was fuming—she had never once in her life been this cross with her father but then again, she had never been snapped at by him nor had been grounded at his word. 

He was her dad, yes, he raised her since birth and taught her how to be a person. This was over the line in her opinion. Although Kristoff probably did have every right and Chae had been  bit out of line with insult and use of language. 

Against Anna’s house and online safety rules, Chae had created an account on a free online dating site. Somehow this was found out about but not the exact reason for being grounded—it was part of it. 

"So? Mom, like, honestly!  You never ever let me do ANYTHING and just because you were stupid enough to fuck  a complete stranger who turned out to be a complete liar within the first few hours you met him doesn’t mean I will!”

Anna had been shocked, stunned, in tears. She had just looked at her daughter with these disappointed eyes and walked away which was when Kristoff gave the punishment. 

The text to Hans was sent three hours after being sent to bed at 7:30pm only because Chapin managed to get her cellphone from her dad’s night table without him knowing.  

She walked the four miles, which took a quick  hour and ten minutes. The dark did bother her and she was the kind of person that did tend to become lost easily but not this time.  

Tired but emotionally stimulated, Chae looked at her phone. Hopefully her father would be awake now that it was past midnight. Without a second thought, she rang the doorbell.

Hans was pretty sure there had never been a time when Chapin willing wanted to come to his house. So obviously something was wrong. He didn't push it though. It did no good to push it if she didn't want to talk about it.

He wasn't sure if she needed to be picked up or not but when she didn't text back, he just settled back on the couch to work a little bit longer. He groaned when he pushed himself off the couch, fuck he was getting old. He headed to the door anyway, opening it with a smile but then frowning, "Chapin, how did you get here?"

Anna studied the woman for a few moments. She figured this woman didn’t know exactly who she was. “Seeing him? As in romantically? I’m not.” she shrugged. “And if I were, I don’t think that is a matter that should be known between a secretary and her superior.”

"A secretary and her superior?" The woman seemed amused as she sat the papers back down on the desk. "Now look," She nodded, "I've been working for Mr. Westergaard long enough to know that if someone else doesn't look out for the man, he won't look out for himself. And there is no one but me to do so."

Anna raised a brow herself, “you don’t trust me, do you?” not even realizing he might need it for the meeting. 

But the first fifteen minutes flew by and Anna was deep into her game when his secretary came in. It did startle her at first but she tried to mind her own business, trying to focus on her phone. 

Her hair was a bit out of place from laying on the floor, which she didn’t quite notice and after a few moments, Anna couldn’t stay quiet any longer. “How long have your worked for Mr. Westergaard?” she asked, putting her cellphone down and bringing her hand that her wedding and engagement ring on to her chin.

"I have to do a presentation," He called out as he left.

The woman bustled around silently, glancing up when Anna spoke. "About a year," She sighed as she walked over and started to straighten up his desk. "And how long have you been seeing Hans?" She asked, glancing up and arching an eyebrow at her.
