Let’s break this down, shall we?

You start by referring to people as “butt hurt and triggered” which is not only disrespectful, but shows a complete lack of nuance as to why some fans are upset. It’s one thing if you yourself are unaffected by Zac’s bigotry, but to act like no one else has a right to have a different perspective is unhelpful.

You then claim “you all said you’re leaving.” Many have left. Many fans are no longer speaking out and have disengaged completely. Many of these are BIPOC or LGBTQ+ fans who do not have the emotional energy to continue to speak out when it comes to Hanson. I guess this is fine with you, and with the band, that almost all that remains are white straight fans.

As for the ones still posting on their pages: we spent 23 years supporting this band. We’ll spend the next 23 criticizing them if we decide to. If you are fine with sitting quietly by while Zac posts racist, transphobic, misogynistic and islamophobic content, that’s your choice. My choice is to keep speaking out about it. It’s not about “accomplishing anything” or “showing them.” It’s about speaking up for what we believe in, which is ironically something Hanson has always promoted. 

“You’ll still pay to see them.” Um, nope. I can only speak for myself in this, but this band will never see a single red cent from me ever again.

And to cap off this post, you sprinkle in language like “crazy” and “psychotic” which not only insinuates that people who are opposed to bigotry are mentally ill, but suggests that being mentally ill is a moral failing.

I have been a Hanson fan since i was 9 years old. 1997 when i first heard MMMBop on MTV I was hooked. Middle of Nowhere took me down a rabbit hole of music and Tulsa, Tokyo, and the Middle of Nowhere let me go around the world with my new favorite band.

To me, liking Hanson was nothing out of the ordinary, but to the outside that wasn't the case.

"Eww black people aren't supposed to listen to Hanson."

"Wait, YOU like Hanson?"

"You're going to a Hanson concert? Have you looked in the mirror?"

"Did you forget you're black?"

Oh yeah, that part. I was black. The amount of bullying i endured for just listening to their music was almost expected, i just never thought it would be magnified because of my race. I wore a Hanson tshirt to school only ONE time my entire life - it was the last day of school in the 6th grade. I didn't understand the attention until a friend said to me, "Well come on. I mean you ARE black.." i went to the girl's bathroom and cried, turned my shirt inside out and wore it that way for the rest of the day.

Once i was old enough to go to shows it was something else. It was fun, exciting, and thrilling even. However I had to learn how to be uncomfortable. Uncomfortable with the comments I'd hear ("she looks like she belongs at a snoop dogg show" - Underneath Tour Chicago 2006), uncomfortable with the way event staff treated me because i look so out of place, uncomfortable with the stank eyes, side eyes, and glares, uncomfortable listening to the way fans talk about the black lady in the House of Blues bathroom - she's my people! That's somebody's grandmaw!

I saw a quote today that said, "Racism is so American that people think protesting racism means protesting America." I understand people refrain from getting into any political talk because it's a sensitive topic and well, that's your personal right.

But racism isn't political.

I was born with this skin. And i have a better chance at dying, failing, and suffering because of it.

Black Lives Matter. How can you love the culture and not the people? That's hypocrisy. The foundation of rock and roll and gospel is rooted in songs of slavery.

When i stand for 12 hours to be in the 2nd bar balcony at a show and i still have the energy to jump and dance and scream, it's because the music has touched my soul so deep that i catch that spirit. To stand there and say i love my band and my band loves me.

But now i ask myself, do they REALLY love me? Or do they love what my people brought to the music industry so that they could thrive?

These past two weeks have been emotionally exhausting so i turned to the music of the band that's brought me comfort all these years. I check their social media pages for further comfort, but aside from the NASA launch there was silence.

Silence.

And it took us, the black fans, (and some pretty pissed off white ones) to get Hanson to finally step out into the world to say something. A very generic, dry, bullshit something. How can a band profit off the images of poor African children yet can't find the courage to tell their black fans that their lives matter? Do they know what it's like for us? For their friends Dimitrius and Will? Do they care?

At this point, i don't know. As a black woman I've felt so much pain these past 2 weeks i don't think i even have any room for more grief. Will I go on listening to Hanson? Most likely yes. Will it sound the same? No.

All those years of pain and bullying and awkwardness and being the only black girl, the token black girl, the girl willing to be brave enough to be out of place and black in white scenery... for my favorite band to refuse to say that any of that matters.

That hurts. That really, really fucking hurts.

What we know is that someone found (possibly tipped off by someone who know zac) Zac’s private pinterest and twitter (and instagram but we cannot see what he posts there). Hanson as a whole are too scared of losing those fans. But especially Zac.

I didn’t want to admit it, because I’ve had so many positive experiences with him in person. But the way he speaks to fans so rudely on Instagram. The way he rips off other artists work with no apologies. That covid insensitivity post. The way he patronised a black fan on Instagram on his latest post. The way he refuses to even consider another persons experiences but then laughs and jokes with his little supporters at the expense of their blacks fans and the people asking asking for support for BLM.

He doesn’t want to learn. He doesn’t want to better himself by learning about things which don’t directly affect him but are having a huge impact on a large part of his countries population.

He just wants to be worshiped. Honestly it’s disgusting.

Alright guys, with Zac’s latest posts and comments, I think this is really it. Fan since 97, traveled for shows, bought merch, in the fan club and the street team, most everyone who knows me thinks of ‘Hanson fan’ as one of my primary character traits…

and I’m walking away. They won’t get another dollar from me. Maybe someday I’ll be able to listen to the existing music again but I don’t see how I can feel right supporting them going forward.

If Taylor goes solo let me know. He hasn’t been amazing but has been worlds better than the other two. 

The absolute worse thing is the way white fans are treating black and POC fans who are speaking up. And Hanson is allowing this to happen in their comment sections. Fuck that. Zac replied to a black fan with a sentiment that was basically a different wording of ‘all lives matter.’

Being a fan since 97 I am used to defending the band. Pointing out all the good things they do and the positive messages in the music.

Sure, they’ve also done plenty of dumbass things over the years but it was always just accepted as part of the package and there was always more good than bad. 

Until 2020.

Like...they have done more egregious things this year ALONE than maybe throughout their entire career combined. It would be impressive if it wasn’t mortifying. Let’s see...

-Zac making light of a global pandemic with the licking doorknobs post

-Zac’s videos talking to himself where he puts on the arguably homophobic lisp

-Zac asserting that Hanson Day would go on even as the pandemic became worse. Obviously they eventually cancelled it but I’m sure he was the last to accept it.

-Announcing during a pandemic they’d be playing some dumb state fair or something in July (I didn’t really pay attention to where/what exactly this show was supposed to be). Obviously that eventually got cancelled to, but why the fuck did they even announce it long after it was clear everything like that would be postponed.

-STILL RELEASING NO NEW ALBUMS. I AM SO OVER THE FAN CLUB ONLY ALBUMS. AT LEAST PUT THEM UP ON STREAMING ONCE THEY ARE A YEAR OR TWO OLD. It is 2020 guys, sorry, streaming is the way you get music out there now. You held out long enough. There are plenty of other ways to make money from the fan club.

-Speaking of making money from the fanclub, the ridiculous merch lately. Merch for Isaac’s “Quaranstreams” merch for Zac’s bike accident. These fools will monetize anything.

-Taylor making a post promoting Tesla while Elon Musk is busy making headlines being a verifiable piece of shit

-Then, after another black man is murdered by American police, Hanson’s response is to post about rocket launches and livestreams while fans are literally BEGGING THEM TO SHOW THEIR COMMITMENT TO BLACK LIVES.

Obviously this last one is the most important. Hanson has long cited black artists as some of their biggest influences. They have done charity work in Africa (which, the question of did they do actual good or was that just some white savior BS is a valid question). Only a couple months ago they posted something about new music they are making being “AFRO FUSION.” 

Sooooooooooo let me get this straight Hanson: you want to take black culture and influences and use them to help you make more money through your music but can’t even do the bare minimum of posting about black lives mattering during this time in history? Cool cool.

Taylor did finally make a post, but only after literally hundreds of dissappointed fans commented on Instagram. Still no post from the band account as I am writing this. I have never been more disappointed in this band and I’m not sure if/how they recover from this.
