Much ado about Entrepreneurship

I've been thinking about what it really means to be an "entrepreneur". When you get a job, you basically exchange your services for cash. However when you start a company, you give up that opportunity to build your own cash + equity. The risk here is that, if youve made the wrong bet, you get none. However, let's say you do get it right and get both (a cash generating business most likely equals a valuable business). Even when you do get the cash, you're unsatisfied until you're also able to exchange your equity for cash as well, an even higher payout. The end goal for startups is to exit i.e. Sell the company or IPO. From what I've learned you have a higher chance of being acquired than an IPO. And when you sell, your contract will most likely require that you stay as an employee with your acquirer for a period of 3 - 4 years. Now you're back to being an employee. So you've been working hard at going back to being an employee, only that this time around its temporary and youre loaded with $$$. I've spoken to a few entrepreneurs about this but I didnt get the response I was looking for. I think it's really important to have clarity on this because it means that if you do get the opportunity to work for a growth company for cash and stock, you should take it. However I realize, some people start businesses only to have their freedom + cash only. No interests in equity or selling. I guess that's okay too but be clear on your expectations. Don't wake up every morning hoping to become the next Mark Zuckberg.
