Captain America and Bucky #624
rewrittenisms :
natasha was much better at pretending she was alright than others around here. maybe it was because she returned and everything was in the right place, everyone made it through and her family was whole. her sacrifice, though maybe it wasn’t really one anymore, saved the day, she was saved right back, the end. they lived happily ever after. funny how fairy tales maybe were true after all. she supposed that was just if the happily ever after ended right here, not lasting long enough for the next threat to come.
she wasn’t exactly going through the motions, but she was avoiding like she was best at. morgan made it easy, smiling for her was easy. sitting with tony and talking about all he wanted to do around the lakehouse and the compound, making sure everyone had a place to stay, but really just wanted them close. hearing the guardians’ music outside, hearing sam debate with anyone about the current song being good or not. it all made it easy for a while, for the whole while she wasn’t alone.
her and james had a past, one she knew, but never asked if he remembered or not. she thought to, but he had steve and a life in the future and not something to bring the past into. it didn’t change that she somehow still felt like they were connected, like they always were. that they didn’t really have to speak to talk. they were always something else than lovers, what they both needed at the time. and she couldn’t really miss that because she felt it all the same.
she found him outside, meditating, something she didn’t want to interrupt, but something she could find peace in too. silently, she picked a bit of grass next to his mat and sat down, letting her smile fall, letting the truer emotion cross her face, no strain from having to keep up one that was real but didn’t tell everything, sharing space to breathe.
Feeling the presence of someone next to him, he glanced over. Surprised to see Natasha sitting next to him. Bucky studied her face for a moment. Just trying to read her. He always had a tough time trying to figure out how she was feeling, but he could tell that something was bothering her.
Their past is something Bucky thought about quite a bit. They’ve been through a lot together. Bucky never really knew how to bring it up though, or even if Nat would want to talk about that. He knew it was a tough time for her too. Maybe she blocked those memories out. There were good times though. She was the only good memories he has about being the winter soldier. She made him feel like more than just a weapon.
He didn’t know what to say to her. Maybe he didn’t need to say anything at all. The silence wasn’t awkward at all. It was rather comfortable. Bucky looks down, noticing her hands picking at the grass. He sighs softly and takes her hand.

tony’s features softened - though they weren’t exactly hard - when he realized it was morgan that came out to the porch to join him. he didn’t have to feel defensive because she wanted him out of his room more than even he wanted to be. and even so, he was always softer with her than anyone else. she would always get away with whatever and maybe she knew that, but she also didn’t push it. she kept her room clean, went to bed when he asked ( even if she did sneak out, but he could hardly blame her since the coolest people in the world were in this house ).
he shrugged, pursing his lips together in thought until he smiled into the expression. “i don’t know, maybe it would be nice having a shower without even getting out of bed,” he said, smiling at her. yeah maybe a soggy bed would be terrible but, the positives may outweigh that.
after a moment more, he patted his lap, opening his arms to her. he was healed enough for that even if he could hear a few members of the family hold their breath like they felt a disturbance in the force. “save me.”
Morgan giggled at his response and crawled up into his lap. The girl wrapped her arms around him, careful not to hurt him in any way. “Auntie Genna isn’t going to be happy.” She states looking at him, “I’m happy you’re up though.” Morgan adds with a smile.
The house has been packed with people lately but all she wanted to do was be with her dad. He was truly her best friend.

Bucky woke up in a cold sweat, jolting up suddenly. His heart racing a mile a minute. Nightmares of his past haunting his dreams. This was nearly a nightly occurrence. He couldn’t remember the last time he got a good full night of sleep. Either his thoughts kept him awake or his inner demons woke him.
During his time in Wakanda, Shuri did help a lot to remove his triggers. Bucky no longer responds to those words hydra planted in his mind. He is still aware of all the horrid things he did as the winter soldier. Part of him wishes he could just be wiped again and start over. Bucky just wants the pain and guilt to go away. This would take time and lots of therapy.
The soldier takes a deep breath and gets up out of bed. He knew he wouldn’t be able to fall back asleep. Better to just get an early start on the day. Bucky walks out of the room and toward the kitchen of the Starks house. He was grateful to Tony for letting him and the others stay while the new Avengers facility was being built. He didn’t feel like he deserved all the kindness after what he did. All the pain he’s caused him and his family.
After a quick cup of coffee, Bucky headed outside to try and clear his mind. Another great idea from Shuri. Meditation and Yoga. Weird but it did seem to help him. Bucky set up his mat and sat down. Taking a deep breath and closing his eyes. Focusing only on the sound of his breathing and the faint sound of water from the lake. Not hearing someone approach him.

breath in. the lake lapped against the shore. breath out. a sparrow chirped. breath in. a leaf scratched against the exposed dirt of the grass. breath out. natasha hummed just a bit louder than she had been inside.
his breathing was normal, nothing much left for pain. really his only issue was exhaustion no matter what anyone else would worry about. he guessed exhaustion was enough to worry about, but he could still have sores and that could be something way less pressing than what it could of been. he could not be there living with the exhaustion as an alternative. he could live with anything to just be living right now listening to the birds chirp, knowing he had hundreds of nights in the future of morgan cuddling in after a nightmare next to him like she did last night.
he had scars and probably a permanently ruined hairdo due to half the side of his head, but considering everything else? the twins were fucking miracles. maybe sometime in the next month genna would stop apologizing for the leftover marks when she actually listened to him say they just proved he was tough and he had friends that cared about him more than he could ever ask for. and honestly hair grows through scars sometimes so maybe it won’t even be noticeable. they saved his arm from nerve damage, saved the arm altogether to be even more accurate and impressive. he was fine, everything was fine, he beat death that one last time.
the door opened and since he still heard natasha humming, he figured it wasn’t her. she, thankfully, hadn’t chastised him for being out of bed as he failed to sneak past, just gave him the weather report and a muffin. cool, sunny, and breezy and chocolate chip. “i know i’m supposed to be in bedprison… but honestly this is so much more relaxing and when the fairs wanna stare masochistically at me later at least they have a nice ambience,” he said before turning to see who it was.
These past few days have been a lot for Morgan. Seeing her dad so hurt was the worst thing shes ever seen. Morgan wanted to make him feel better but kisses didn’t seem to fix these kinds of pains (She tried. Many times). Dad would always talk about his times saving the universe. She didn’t know that bad things can still happen even if you win. Sometimes you have to risk everything, even if it means you might not make it. Thankfully the twins were able to save Tony. Morgan is truly grateful for them.
Morgan has been spending a lot of time with everyone now that her dad is on bedrest. Though she tries to sneak away to him any chance she gets. It's nice having everyone around. She usually didn’t see her aunts and uncles too often. Them all busy trying to save what was lost.
Morgan had just woken up from a nap and headed to her father's room. but when she got there he was gone. She smiled in hopes that it meant he was all better. Morgan started to look around the house for him. The sound of her little feet running around echoed through the house. Morgan peaked out the window toward the lake and there he was. Morgan opened the door and walked over to him. “You could move your bed outside.” Morgan gave a little shrug, “but if it rains that would not be good.”
